I am not necessarily disagreeing. But for the sake of context, it should be remembered that Mordecai was Esther's uncle and Naomi was Ruth's mother in law.
A single person adopting a child (or children) is endorsed in the Bible. The Book of Esther talks about a single man "Mordecai" adopting Esther (Esther 2:7).
