If the genesis are so bad then tell me how many times you have heard anything go wrong with them, they are more powerful than any FL9 built, they are twice as fast, in fact they can hit 110mph, they are more fuel efficient too. I am a huge fan of the FL9's don't get me wrong they are some of the most beautiful engines ever created, but you need to stay with the times and think from a business stand point. Ur not gonna give to the public a 50 year old engine that has power shortages.
Yes, the were lower horsepower as they were designed to be. You really need to compare a pair of F's to a single Genny as far as HP goes. But reliability wise, WHEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED, they were more reliable. The difference is that once the first order for the P32s went out in the 90s they already had writing on the wall and retired them as they failed (more or less) instead of keeping up with maintenance.
they've proved them selves - I'm just still not a fan of their lines and such and this MN scheme is just about the worst possible paint application on that carbody. I think the Genesis carbody looks frigin mint in the VIA paint....
I was saying that Genny's imo are better looking then DE/DM 30's.I haven't heard much complaints on they perform, all you hear is how every week LIRR EMD's are having problems resulting in delays.
I don't know if I agree with FL92002's statement entirely - I think the F59PHI more closely represents what he says, but the DE/DM was indeed GM/EMDs attempt to compete with the P32ACDM - and let just say its been a pretty miserable failure. Which is amazing considering the first really reliable dual mode the FL9 was indeed an EMD product....
beautiful? im gonna have to disagree. maybe nice compared to some things, but definately not "beautiful". They may try to pull hard, but the dual modes struggle with any more than 8 cars. And in this particular paint scheme they are just plain UGLY.
These new EMD Passenger and GE Locos aren't built to the same Great Quality as The FL9's or U34CH's used on NJ Transit, modified EMD or GE U or C series locos work alot better then this new GE or EMD Contracted built locs, Metra in Chicago has MP36's but can't be used on the CNW Commuter lines because they are 450 LBS or tonns over weight, New stuff by EMD/GE suck, bring back EMD/GE U Boats or C30-7, not new remand stuff, too many problems.
all the way. that is why MN got the P-32DMAC's --> dual mode capability - able to run on diesel outside, and off third rail (700vDC) in the Park Ave. tunnel....
The 201 and the 203 shortly after returning from rebuilding and repainting have been experiencing issues with the HEP (Head End Power) system, which results often in the engine shutting down constantly, even after numerous computer reboots in the cabs. I think they merely look good....trust me from operating experience they are basket cases!! I rather have an FL-9 anytime as the power on my consist. Goodness I miss the "Covered Wagons"!!:-)
I'd rather MNCRR sells a few P32s to LIRR just in case a few DE/DM30ACs fuck up real bad....
Shit, I wish LIRR would take MNCRR's FL9 #2008 for rebuild and permanent service to Montauk and Greenport ONLY!! And if that doesn't cut the cake enough, take a few 1983 Bombardier Shoreliners in CDOT Scheme and rebuild 'em for LIRR capabilities.
Yes - the best fiberglass doorstops ever made - but as engines - they are prone to fires, stall on grades, have weak frames, and at 12-15 years old, MN's P-32's ride worse than Amtrak P40s which have 5x-10x the mileage on them - case in point #213 (5 fires), #218 (worst ride quality), etc.
Also add to 213 numerous HEP (Head End Power) failures and numerous complete engine shutdowns, even after computer reboots. I swapped my deadhead equipment (train # 2815 out of Croton) at Beacon this past Friday for the crapped out train #806 with the dead 213 on the north. Me and my engineer couldn't get her to go, neither could the Poughkeepsie Mech. forces who responded nor the trainmaster on duty who responded.
I will agree that the LIRR's DE/DM disasters are worse mechanically - but that is solely the fault of the LIRR for refusing to choose a proven "off-the-shelf" design. The DE/DM's are also frigin ugly engines - but they are at least painted decently with respect to their shapes/lines...
If you guys think the "Gennies" and DE/DMs are pieces of crap, take a gander at the NJT PL-42ACs.....they are as crappy as they come. Also known for constant HEP failures and propulsion issues
Not only are the DE/DM 30s operational basket cases, a friend of mine who is a track foreman at LI indicated that their weight has been responsible for track structure wear and bridge wear since they have come on the LIRR property.
Oh yeah - they frigin kick so much ass..... Get real. They are only 12-15 years old and run worse than 35 year old GP-40's. They are currently being sent out for rebuilt and coming back with new paint and worse reliability than when they left - case in point #201.

@MrZkr123
What power shortages are you talking about?
The FL9s were capable of the same speeds, and they accelerated faster.

DM/DE's are the aborted fetus of what GM/EMD/Super Steel had in mind to replace the F-Unit in terms of looks and features.

Genesis are beautiful locomotives. They dig in hard, and pull/pull well. Well, at least in California they do.

the only ones that don't go all the way are the leased Amtrak P40's -> because the lack dual mode capabilities....
