It was 42 years ago when I first heard this guy play guitar, him, Jansch, Roy Harper, et al, were pulling Folk Music out of that boring 'beer glass in one hand, other hand clapped over ear, whilst singing' genre, did it for me though,it made me pick up a guitar, and learn to play, ( not as good as those guys though!)

  • 30 years ago my girlfriend gave me a tape of Lady and the Unicorn and it was off to the races. I never played guitar the same way again. Thanks John.

BTW, why does this guy always look blasted? There's even a picture of him and Bert Jansch together and they both look blotto. That settles it! In my next life I want to be John Renbourn! Play great guitar and be 'happy' all the time!

  • It's as if the guitar is another limb on his body. He plays with no effort at all. He just puts his hands on the guitar, and it's there.

  • ha hes using an old school capo... i have one like that.... there awful

  • 2 people are jealous.

  • First heard this from the City Waites. Didn't know Renbourn had done it but it doesn't surprise me.

  • i used to play this. learned it off an album with a bunch of period instruments, and when the fiddle kicked in on this one it was like an old barn dance, all it needed was sheep bleating in the background!

  • Cool, I like that.

  • Esto es tocar la guitarra y lo demás, tonterías.

  • God, that's amazing.

  • God, that's amazing.

  • Amazing guitar playing, going to see the big man play in Oxfordshire next month can't wait!

  • He is obviously great, but I just can't help feeling this song is much better played a bit slower.

  • @budders444

It's English folk dance. Like most folk dances they start fast and get faster :) You should listen to some Bulgarian wedding band music if you want to hear *really* fast folk music.

  • Reminds me of RT's vincent black lightning a little.

  • There is Renbourn -- and then there are the rest of us. No one ever played guitar in such a gorgeous manner.

  • Blew my hair back!

  • My F**ing idol!

    Go!... red beard!

  • The tune is called "The English Dance", this is the 1979 tour with Stefan Grossman and Duck Baker, the location is Teatro Lirico in Milan, Italy and I was there.

  • One of the greatest guitarists of all time - without a doubt. Have seen him multiple times in concert: an amazing experience! Thank you John!

  • Bloody hell!

  • he can play this shit and loads of other different styles for a few hours from memory and not drop a note .. truly special. okay, enough gushing, but he really made me want to learn fingerstyle. check out my version of alices wonderland. search for alices wonderland bert jansch guitar..... thanks ged.

  • i find your comments interesting but when i read them, 3 in a row i get the impression you were on speed :)

  • drunk actually but you were in the ballpark, alcohol plus enthusiasm. almost the same!

  • haha, i have a similar habbit!

  • also anyone lookin for tab should try stefan grossmans guitar workshop. easy to find on web. most of the other unauthorized tab on web is crap, i mean, we aint talkin about tabbin black hole sun here. its tricky shit. his early bluesy instrumentals are excellent. check out, buffalo , on the barge, debbie anne, judy. he wrote these when he was about twenty. fuckin amazin. also he is still touring regularly. seen him in my home town in the uk a couple of times and also in the states a couple.

  • suck my balls pls, they r very dry. extremely dry!

  • guys a total genius. got into him from his first two albums, john renbourn and another monday, you can get them on cd again, they were hard to find for a time.. thanks. ged.

  • wow how fast 5*****S thanks

  • thanks for this JSailus, great stuff! looks like it was filmed around the time of album release (Black Balloon); any dates, locations available?

    thanks again,

    the word of gord

  • Great!!!!

  • What so is the name of this just "English Dance"?

  • The band Gryphon played this song too and called it "Tea Wrecks"

  • I have long been of the opinion that he's the finest acoustic guitar player around. I can't say I am a big fan of the tunes he plays but his guitar work is up there with the very best imo. Thanks for posting.

  • love this performance!!!

  • in the tune of fucking f i might add.

  • *A- open G.

  • the most fucked up camera angles to one of the greatest pickin' songs ever. i think i'll

    favorite it!

  • I love this tune. A shame it is almost impossible to play.

  • Qué monstruo!!! the best

  • Nice video effects..lol.. This is a fantastic song.. I wish i could play it..:(

  • There is a book/DVD with the TAB.

  • THE TITLE. NOW.

    nah, just kidding :)

well, yet I'd like to know the name

of that book.. I will be delighted

to see my guitar skills are so poor

    I can't handle this tune!

p.s.: will you pardon my naif english? ^^"
