It was 42 years ago when I first heard this guy play guitar, him, Jansch, Roy Harper, et al, were pulling Folk Music out of that boring 'beer glass in one hand, other hand clapped over ear, whilst singing' genre, did it for me though,it made me pick up a guitar, and learn to play, ( not as good as those guys though!)
30 years ago my girlfriend gave me a tape of Lady and the Unicorn and it was off to the races. I never played guitar the same way again. Thanks John.
BTW, why does this guy always look blasted? There's even a picture of him and Bert Jansch together and they both look blotto. That settles it! In my next life I want to be John Renbourn! Play great guitar and be 'happy' all the time!
i used to play this. learned it off an album with a bunch of period instruments, and when the fiddle kicked in on this one it was like an old barn dance, all it needed was sheep bleating in the background!
It's English folk dance. Like most folk dances they start fast and get faster :) You should listen to some Bulgarian wedding band music if you want to hear *really* fast folk music.
The tune is called "The English Dance", this is the 1979 tour with Stefan Grossman and Duck Baker, the location is Teatro Lirico in Milan, Italy and I was there.
he can play this shit and loads of other different styles for a few hours from memory and not drop a note .. truly special. okay, enough gushing, but he really made me want to learn fingerstyle. check out my version of alices wonderland. search for alices wonderland bert jansch guitar..... thanks ged.
also anyone lookin for tab should try stefan grossmans guitar workshop. easy to find on web. most of the other unauthorized tab on web is crap, i mean, we aint talkin about tabbin black hole sun here. its tricky shit. his early bluesy instrumentals are excellent. check out, buffalo , on the barge, debbie anne, judy. he wrote these when he was about twenty. fuckin amazin. also he is still touring regularly. seen him in my home town in the uk a couple of times and also in the states a couple.
guys a total genius. got into him from his first two albums, john renbourn and another monday, you can get them on cd again, they were hard to find for a time.. thanks. ged.
I have long been of the opinion that he's the finest acoustic guitar player around. I can't say I am a big fan of the tunes he plays but his guitar work is up there with the very best imo. Thanks for posting.

It's as if the guitar is another limb on his body. He plays with no effort at all. He just puts his hands on the guitar, and it's there.

First heard this from the City Waites. Didn't know Renbourn had done it but it doesn't surprise me.

He is obviously great, but I just can't help feeling this song is much better played a bit slower.

There is Renbourn -- and then there are the rest of us. No one ever played guitar in such a gorgeous manner.
