I Love This Song, this is one of my favourite song from the album "Back To Basisc", afther the songs "Ain´t No Other Man", "Back In The Day" and "Welcome"
Also i have watched like every live performance i can of CA's over time coz i'm a vocalist and i love to watch great vocalists but she seems quite messy to me. some things she does is cool but other times it's like 'you're not getting paid by the syllable STOP!'

jskymusicfan, I really don't think Christina does the riffs and oo-aa's to show off to audiences, rather - I think she just gets into the moment while singing. It's probably the same for you when you're practicing your own material in your bedroom or studio, etc, and you get carried away.
I think over time, though, Christina will probably pull back a lot and be able to do what she does now but in a more simple way.
I thought "Man's World" had some good moments, but I thought she oversang there too. Another example is her cover of Donny Hathaway's gorgeous "A Song For You". Her singing is fabulous technically, but it's 90% showing off, 10% genuine soul. If you compare it with Donny's original, you can hear the diff. He was one of the best singers ever but doesn't need to bonk people over the head with belting and riffs on every note. That's what makes him a truly great artist. Just my 2 cents...
I agree that Cristina's vocal prowess is very impressive, but am I the only one here who thinks she strangled this song to death with oversinging? To me she always sounds like she's trying to prove something. It's true that the song seems to be written that way, but in my view that makes it boring. This is musical histrionics. CA still hasn't learned any dynamics - her technique is to hit people over the head with the belting from second 1.
To see what I mean, check out some late 80's Whitney Houston or early 90's Mariah Carey and compare. WH and MC had similar vocal prowess to CA but they both understood how to use dynamics to build intensity throughout the song, not start belting from the very beginning. To me all 3 women are roughly equal in vocal ability but vintage WH and MC are superior musicians. For them it's more about the song than showing off. For CA it's the opposite.
i understand your point but i still don't agree. this song is supposed to be like this, it has a little something from the gospel vibe. she doesn't sing everything like this. there are songs more 'quiet' and balanced. obviously not the first album, it's all about the vocal skills ;) but since stripped she does know how to 'build' a song. besides, MC WH and CA are so different. they all have amazing powerful voices but still, i don't think they should be compared
oh, and i really don't know how can you say that there's nothing more to song than showing off for Christina. haven't you seen her crying during Oh Mother? or her Hurt performance on VMA? or Man's World on Grammys?
It's not that i think Cristina is ONLY showing off. I don't doubt that she can feel genuine emotion in a performance. But in general, I find her somewhat irritating to listen to since it feels like her #1 priority is to "blow people away" with her vocal chops. I don't know her personally, but CA is pretty notorious in the press for being obnoxious to interviewers. As for the song "Thank You", it is ALL snippets of fans telling Cristina how amazing and wonderful she is. C'mon! That's supposed to be a gift for her fans? Not really. Whitney and Mariah can't do even half of what Christina does. They are typical singers who just happen to be very good at one or two genres. Indeed, they were arguably better than Christina in their particular niche specialties, but Christina has miles more versatility. No one can reasonably deny that with a straight face.
As to song delivery, that is just your style preference. That's about the most subjective thing you could ever use to gauge talent.

You can notice she is having a little trouble with the high notes because of the little warming up of the vocal chords. But that does not mean she is a bad singer. Christina is learning to be able to tell when a song requires her "kitchen sing and all" approach or not. However even on the album on which this song appears, she also delivers one of the most stirring barebones vocals ever (Save Me From Myself). This song, being a knock down, drag out, old school old ladies falling out gospel inspired track almost forced a bombastic approach.
I think is Gilbert and Paul, two of her longtime dancers. I met her dancers when they came to see a movie at the movie theatre I was working at in high school (this is during the Stripped tour, like the day before I went to see her in New Orleans).

it seems she didn't had the chance to warm up enough her vocal chords. She sounds like that but she is still the best singer I've ever heard, lots of singers sing without warming up the vocal chords and they do well. Don't be that hard on christina's performance. SHE IS THE BEST ANYWAYS!

believe me I DO LOVE CHRISTINA AGUILERA so I just said what I said because I wanted to defend her. You can notice she is having a little trouble with the high notes because of the little warming up of the vocal chords. But that does not mean she is a bad singer. She is an excellent singer, vocalist and performer. I just lover her!!

Christina is learning to be able to tell when a song requires her "kitchen sing and all" approach or not. However even on the album on which this song appears, she also delivers one of the most stirring barebones vocals ever (Save Me From Myself). This song, being a knock down, drag out, old school old ladies falling out gospel inspired track almost forced a bombastic approach.

I think is Gilbert and Paul, two of her longtime dancers. I met her dancers when they came to see a movie at the movie theatre I was working at in high school (this is during the Stripped tour, like the day before I went to see her in New Orleans).
