  • Hey, jlw! Nice set of how-to videos. Gave me some good ideas to start my layout.

I had a question (having just acquired the Amtrak Heritage P42s myself) do you do any break-in on your locomotives? I've read in the mags and heard from other modelers that they go through some break-in process with their locos on a bench and run the motor for several hours to work in the gears and what-not. Possibly helps the sound problems you have with these units.

  • Any P40/42 that Athearn has produced, never had a sticker on the back for a radiator fan. It has always been a etched metal screen that you can see through it. To let you know.

  • Hey do you know how much the 4 HO Scale Amtrak GE P42DC Genesis 40th Anniversary locomotives cost at the train stores? I would sure as heck love to buy 1 or even 2 of the special edition Amtrak 40th Anniversay GE P42DC HO Scale locomotives.lol

  • you can get them on the museam tran, i saw them for sale today on it

  • Is the Phase 3 "P40" unit any different from the P42's? I can't decide between Phase 3 and Phase 1.

  • @prorobo nothing is different other than the paint scheme

  • @jlwii2000 there is a REALLY small difference between the P40 and P42. I have a P40 and it's got that window at the back. P42s don't have that.

  • Does the fan on top of it actually work or is it used for display purposes?

  • great video did you know there were only 5 heritage units 66, 148, 156, 184, 822 and if you want to see them here is the biglittlerr.blogspot.com/2011/05/amtrak-heratige-units-all-5-together and it shows them oldest to newest.

  • cant find them on walthers site

  • where did you get these units?

  • @andersonjjj333 To all who can't find them, you won't find them in a store. The units are only available from Amtrak at their official store amtrak40th website.

  • Are There SP (southern pacific) locomotives?

  • OH! I didn't see that you changed your layout! Looks great!

  • Please put the link in your description so we can just click on that. Thanks!

  • Just received an Athearn RTR P42 Genesis for Christmas, but is in Phase V scheme. As you stated in the video, it is quite noisy.

  • Hey jlwii2000 that's a awsome review I just did a review of a mth sd 70 ace kcs 4031 locomotive

  • I've always been wondering, but why do you choose white ties?

  • @DieselSmoke92 Those are the concrete ties used in modern railroading.

  • @wesolint They only use concrete ones around corners in the rockies here...

  • @DieselSmoke92 Those are concrete ties and that's what some RR's use today.

  • @five0fan Alright thanks.

  • @DieselSmoke92 No prob.

  • @DieselSmoke92 Probably because they look newer. ( They are supposed to be concrete)

  • I just got my P42 today, same run, just in normal paint scheme. It started out even louder than yours, but when I ran it around the layout 10-15 times it gradually got quieter.

  • isnt ther one more paint scheme isnt it just gray?

  • Once again another great review. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you and the Family

  • How much does each heritage P42 unit cost?

  • Nice clear video as always. Could you tell me what camera you are using????

    Happy Christmas.

    Steve

  • Another great video, can't wait to see what you come up with in 2012. Merry Christmas and a Happy New to you and yours!

  • I saw AMTRK 822 & 406 at LAUPT a couple weeks ago. You should get some SP AC4400CW's with a patch job for UP.

  • my favorite scheme is the original amtrak colors

  • Great video! Marry Christmas and happy new year!

  • do you have any VIA Rail Canada P42DC's ??

  • they didn't 145 also in the phase 3 and 184 in the phase 4

  • Very Cool!

  • Got my regular/non-Heritage P42 #67 yesterday. I do like the fan detail better than my #10. I wish Athearn would switch to LED lights.

Its too bad you can only get the Heritage units and cars via Amtrak.com as they charge MRSP for it.

  • The radiator fans look good but that about the best part. The lighting is not that good and it sounds terrible running worst than Bachman.

  • ahhh the bloody nose!! love it, great layout, and great trains!

  • a warbonnet and BN paint EMD would be worth your while . you have a nice layout and collection.

  • wow it is a little noisy... sounds like the old rubber band drive!

  • Awsome review..i am geting all the heritage units/cars sometime next year..my amtrak collection will almost be to were i want it to be..great vid..just awsome!!!

  • Do you prefer Amtraks old logo or the new logo ? I actually prefered the old logo.

  • Wow Wow Wow! Is it alright if I envy you?

  • Amtrak #822 is a P40DC not P42DC.

  • Nice.

  • merry Christmas jlwii2000 and every one elts

  • Hey man great update do you have any plans to expand the layout maybe adding any thing new into it maybe a coal yard or even a frayt car loading dock and any plans to moterize the wind turbines

  • Merry Christmas indeed. Have enjoyed watching and following you this year.

Say, how's your son? Plan on surprising him with a train this weekend?

(Bet he'll never expect that!) Upload some short Christmas clips of him for us.

Stay warm and healthy in the Heartland. See ya' soon!

  • Try to loosen 4 bolts of the motor noise should gone just 1/4 way it works on my Athearns, nice rewiew.

  • Glad to hear that you are going to present KCS. Grew up seeing KCS in Louisiana. Southern Belle is especially memorable.

  • Thanks for showing.i put this on for my other Ho RR models

  • i cant wait to get mine

  • Looks awesome! I just ordered one of these!

  • How much do you want for your bnsf sd70ace from athearn? I Really want one and can't find any with sound on eBay.

    P.s. I do trades to.

  • great review!!

  • Thank You for amazing work, and for sharing!!

  • There are actually 6 Amtrak heritage units. 156, 66, 145, 822, 184, and 406.

  • @jpaufsc dang! But there are only 4 P42's I think.

  • @jlwii2000 why did you not get the passanger cars

  • @Jjgould21 I didn't really care for the passenger cars, plus I have 10 superliners for the P42's to pull.

  • @jlwii2000 Are they coming out with an F40?

  • Good Review.

  • @jlwii2000 on the Amtrak site they say they have 5 p42 heritage units

  • @jlwii2000 Yeah 4 P42's and the P40 and F40

  • @jpaufsc i like 406 js
