This is a fantastic interpretation of a classic song. This song has so much meaning and Matt has served it well. If only more peaople today payed more attention to our past... back when music was actually music and not just a stupid bass drum and skimpy clothing.
Hmmm not bad; but Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 19 and the Moody Blues have been performing it about 10 times better than this for 45 years and they still are. It's good to see this fabulous song getting some publicity though.
This is a great effort and a very faithful cover. But the success rate of X factor winners is very slim. There hasn't been a great singer songwriter produced by the X Factor, with Leona Lewis being a Beyonce wannabee and Alexandra Burke producing terrible dance anthems. Of course being a songwriter is not easy.
My problem is Simon Cowell who gives the winner a chance at stardom, only to produce another show every year with last years winner nearly forgotten.
This is just beautiful. To perform live to this standard shows what an amazing talent Matt is. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. This should have been the single. Gorgeous.
So glad he won! Lost count the amount of times I phoned for him. For me, this was even better than 'every time I close my eyes, I see your face'. Well done Matt, the best person won.
I don't like the x factor because I think the covers element should be removed and there should ONLY be people who write and perform their own material and then get judged on that. I am pleased Matt won because I know he can do all of those things and I recently read that he is being given autonomy over his career because of this very fact.
Now, next year, make it a requirement that people have ALL the elements of what make an artist - not just a good voice.
How could anyone call this guy talent-less? He can certainly hold a note and to do that while playing guitar is definately skill. Definately deserved to win! I'll be buying his single :)

It's not just the notes he reaches that impress, but I love how full-sounding it is and his intonation. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable when people are singing and you can really hear what 'parts' of their voice they are using to do a certain melody but for the most part I like matts transitions and pronunciation. Except in you got the love because it sounded like he wasn't sure how he was going to approach the song or what version he was doing...
or maybe the problem with "you've got the love" was the fact that his voice was shot and he had a fever on stage. not easy to sing when your throat is on fire and sweating out the flu.

Sore throat isn't actually a flu symptom, but yes I have found it hard to sing for concerts running a 40 degree plus fever. And I'm not one of those 'I got a bad cold, woe is me' people either. I know what flu does to you. I just got out of hospital with it!

This guy is on fire! His guitar is actually tuned a semi-tone higher than the original to give even more shine to his head voice - I noticed the same when he did "First time ever I saw your face", stunning vocal range - props to you Matt - Rebecca is the only one that barely touches the smoke from his heels - sadly, Rebecca would be just too boring to watch - I grow instant cobwebs when she's on stage, love her voice though.
I'm not gonna say this is better than the original, because I also love the original... But this song is perfect for his voice, very good perfomance... and I can imagine if the Moody Blues see this performance they would like it 2...

I Really love this year contestants!! The 5 finalist are all good on their own! Ofcourse Matt is still the best out of the five. He nailed this song just like the rest except bleeding love. Right at the beginning from his audition of The First Time I said Matt to win. The talent has been so good this year I have been unsure of a top choice over the last few weeks. But I now believe Matt is in a league of his own. So consistently good. I love the emotion with which he sings. And his voice is so powerful. He already sounds as good as any recording artist. And this is one of my favourite songs of all time anyway! Go Matt!

You know, there are different tracks playing in this song, and Matt is playing one. There's more than one guitar playing here, Gym, as I'm sure you know.
I don't play the guitar, but I do know the closer to the headstock the lower the note, and it seems that he's playing the appropriate chords there. His rhythm seems to sync.
I don't know what you're seeing, but what I see isn't out of line with him actually playing the instrument.

Ps; its what I hear than see- You'll note the directors reluctance to film his hands for more than a glimse. Which is wrong because be CAN play, and would lend him some authenticity.

Brilliant vocal on this. The orginal is one of my all time favorite songs, and I actually said a couple of weeks ago to my friends that this song would be an excellent one for his voice. This guy is on fire! His guitar is actually tuned a semi-tone higher than the original to give even more shine to his head voice - I noticed the same when he did "First time ever I saw your face", stunning vocal range - props to you Matt - Rebecca is the only one that barely touches the smoke from his heels - sadly, Rebecca would be just too boring to watch - I grow instant cobwebs when she's on stage, love her voice though.

lol as if glastonbury should be used as a measure of talent. how many good bands sat at home while vampire fucking weekend were headlining for part of the first night? nuff said. whether or not he has a posh background has nothing to do with if people should force themselves to dislike his performances to keep you happy just because you dont. i hate the xfactor but think matt is the only genuinely fantastic act they have

I Really love this year contestants!! The 5 finalist are all good on their own! Ofcourse Matt is still the best out of the five. He nailed this song just like the rest except bleeding love. But I also like the other 5 so it doesn't matter who will go out anymore for me. If it's not Matt it's fine. I can truly enjoy the show now without losers.

Sounds like a "jack the lad" in his audition yet seems to have toned down his essex accent. Has he had his teeth fixed recently? Did he go to a 15k a year boarding school? Was he brought up in 500k house? Did he go to a 500 quid a week drama school or is that just rumour also?

Having been in the crowd on Tuesday night at his homecoming gig, I met a few of his friends and they are all very down to earth as indeed he is. You have just a very big chip on your shoulder. Right at the beginning from his audition of The First Time I said Matt to win. The talent has been so good this year I have been unsure of a top choice over the last few weeks. But I now believe Matt is in a league of his own. So consistently good. I love the emotion with which he sings. And his voice is so powerful. He already sounds as good as any recording artist. And this is one of my favourite songs of all time anyway! Go Matt!

You know, there are different tracks playing in this song, and Matt is playing one. There's more than one guitar playing here, Gym, as I'm sure you know.
I don't play the guitar, but I do know the closer to the headstock the lower the note, and it seems that he's playing the appropriate chords there. His rhythm seems to sync.
I don't know what you're seeing, but what I see isn't out of line with him actually playing the instrument.

@notmzbehaving Not necessarily-you can play chords nearer the bridge that are lower in the "bottom end" (bass notes) than nearer the nut.
Ps; its what I hear than see- You'll note the directors reluctance to film his hands for more than a glimse. Which is wrong because be CAN play, and would lend him some authenticity.

Matt and his guitar is the best ^^ no gimmicks needed, his voice when he hits those big notes gives me goosebumps! That said, while I think he deserves to win, I don't want him to win...people who win (apart from Leona) are almost immediatly forgotten after their first release. Even if he doesn't win, he'll do well I think :)

Brilliant vocal on this. The orginal is one of my all time favorite songs, and I actually said a couple of weeks ago to my friends that this song would be an excellent one for his voice. Glad he did it, but hope he didn't do any damage, as he has been sick all week, and I noticed the first thing he did at the end of the song was clutch at his throat like he was really sore there.

If Wagner wins, I feel sorry for him because his "supporters" will have forgotten all about him before the klieg lights cool.
Matt, on the other hand, will always have a future in music, and will go as far as he wants to go. He has a beautiful, natural talent .
By the way--he was a musician before XF, and there are plenty of videos of him playing his guitar just fine.
I loved this version of the song; actually, I like it better than the original.

I just pointed out he played the wrong chord and if his guitar was plugged in-and switched on and volume turned up- you would have heard it as it would have clashed harmonically. btw-winning this comp is usually the kiss of death in a "career" in music. Apart from leona lewis, most have difted into obscurity. contestants are rabbits caught in the headlights

@tvrulesnation Excatly-he(Cowell) is an oppotunist. I don't dislike Matt, he's a good musician but is having strings pulled from the X factor puppeteers(all are). A true artist has control over thier direction-all these contestants don't.
I just wonder how much the contestants know this. Maybe some do and see it as a price to pay on the road to fame and fortune.
