it is sad,i have been to margate a lot in my life and did notice it rapidly decline(much like the rest of the country with its open door policy)BUT southend on sea was starting to do the same and have you seen it lately? its getting like the south of france!!!,i reckon margate will come back and when it does work hard to keep it going...ps only fools and horses jolly boys outing was about the last of it being great in my mind :)

Dreamland closing (systematically by Jimmy Godden) effectively killed the town's tourism industry, leaving holidaymakers to choose other resorts in Thanet as Margate no longer had a unique selling point, thus starving the town of money and investment, hence the way it is today. Blame Jimmy Godden, he killed Folkestone and Ramsgate too.
he deliberately picked the worse spots! which every town has and i know margate has seen its hey day but its not all doom and gloom, there are some good points.
But i agree a turner centre is not what this place needs, we can blame the politician's but who's vote puts them there in the first place!
i like to say that this made me cry and i agre with sxcnaomi20 there putting the money in the wrong place and wasted money at the wrong things i wish tdc would rethink there plans and put the money where it need
one of britains best known resorts? yeah right! margate is dead now it might have been lovely 40 years ago but in another 40 years the WHOLE place will be closed up and demolished! So sad :(
Of course this is one of Britains best known resorts! Ask anyone in the country to name five and Margate will always be in it, no question. Margate will be back, especially when the Dreamland Heritage Park is built, fantastic stuff.
ive lived here all my life - its sad to know that the town i live in is dead now.... nothing seems to be done about this... moneys spent on westwood cross and a turner center! they need to make it a family place again, fun fun fun place :(
Thanks John. This video has made me cry. I used to go to Margate for a holiday with my parents every year in the sixties when I was a little girl and a teenager. What has happened to this lovely town. My parents are sadly no longer with us, and this video has really upset me as I remember Margate as it was in the sixties. At least I have those lovely memories of lovely Margate when I was young and those memories will be with me forever. Thanks, again John. God Bless.
Thank you for your posting, John. It's so sad to see how my favourite resort has fallen into decline. You sound optimistic, but it will take more than a lick of paint to put it back togther again - but Margate still has the best beach. I'll always remember my holidays and daytrips to Margate and Cliftonville during the 1940s to 1960s, and I hope you enjoy the compilation of stills and film material I've put together of the resort in happier times. I think it's so sad that a place that once created so many magical memories for so many people has fallen into such a terrible state.
