He was observing Kimmel's behavior while he told the (presumably) told the truth about how he got to the show. Then, if Kimmel lied later, you could use that previous information to look for different tells and behaviors that would give him away when he lied.

It's an excellent show. Watching it on DVD and glad when there are new releases. Original idea that was a lucky find for the writer, producer, network. J. Donavan should not be surprised that people watch it. He's got something to be proud of as it's not the typical smart a*, flash production that now takes up quite a bit of T.V. Likable , all age range of characters. All characters are good - best casting of Sharon Gless (sp).
