  • where did you get this audio from?

  • I love Tim burton. I just read he's coming out with a box set with danny elfman celebrating their collaboration over the last 25 years. they haven't released too much info yet but you can sign up for the email list on burtonelfman, com

  • i know this is live but its still really awesome

  • seen it yesterday! lets chat

hi anyone want to chat OS

  • The laugh at the end sounds like Goofy LOL XD

  • ur right it does sound like goofy lawl xP

  • The laugh at the end sounds like Goofy LOL XD

  • was this recorded at the theater??

  • hearing reactions to sweeney killing people is great

  • would be nice without the background people

  • he is absolute

  • AH! I hate this song (Joanna by the younger man) , it always gets stuck in my head, lol. Johnny is actually a very good singer. ^.^

I love all the songs in this film. So awesome!

  • he was in a band before he acted

  • Ah, yea, I knew that. ^.^ But I didn't really know how he sang, which is why I said that. :)

  • I heard he had a LOT of training to sing so well in this movie - and he definitely did it spot on in this movie!!! =D

  • I absolutely love this movie. It's perfect in every way and I will slit the throat of anyone who insults or in any way implies that Johnny cannot sing. That is all.

  • Johanna is sung by the characters Anthony Hope (first), Sweeney Todd (second), Beggar Woman (third), and later Johanna (should be last but not sure about the movie version)

  • yes johnny be singin! he is amazing and so is the movie

  • AHH I LOVE THIS PART OF THE MOVIE!!! IT'S SOO WRONG!!! JOHNNY"S IN HIS OWN WORLD SINGING AND SLICING THROATS!!! AND IT CAUGHT PEOPLE OFF GUARD (especially me)!! ahh man and i love how he sings this song, he sounds so good I wish the accual clip was on here but its in the previews! This movie definitly has it's sick hilarious moments and this was one of them.

  • eliransangelofmusic, Johnny Depp is really singing !!!! Can you hear it ??

  • OMG!...it doesnt even sound like him....WOW he has an amazing voice for someone who a couple of years ago couldnt sing to save his life.......aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh johnny roxs>>>>my sox

  • Last time I cheked....Johnny couldnt sing...:S, enlighten me someone....is he or isnt he singing in Sweeney Todd?

  • Actually, he sings beautifully. Yes, this is Johnny singing.

  • I love this movie! Johnny Depp is the MAN! This song is wicked. The end was shocking, sad and unexpected! Wasn't it? This movie is in my Forever List. Haha. =D

  • Dr Freak:

Ok, I found it. You must be kidding!

And in terms of actors/singers argument...thats just bullshit. There are PLENTY of people who can both act AND sing well. See Matthew Brodrick, Nathan Lane, Jack Black (seriously hes a REALLY good singer) etc...

Are you saying that Matthew Brodrick, Nathan Lane or Jack Black would have had the impact that Depp did - it's really laughable to imagine them in this role - only Depp could have pulled this off - they have no edge or intensity.

  • OK, so who else could pull off Sweeney Todd in a movie. Someone said that Jack Black had a better singing voice. Tell me who, other than Johnny Depp do you think would do the part justice? So what if other actors like Jack Black can sing, I can't imagine anyone out there other than Depp doing this.

  • Anthony's voice! Enough to make you melt! I need to see this badly!

  • the music is in a minor key. major keys (which are what you're used to hearing, probably) make you feel happy. minor keys, like this one, make you feel sad, scared, etc. the notes are right.

  • at 22 to 25 seconds there seems to be a sour note in there; is that the way the music is supposed to be? the rest is fine!

  • it's intentionally there. It's sondheim trying to be clever....which is his!! :D

  • holy goodness.

    I mean,

    blood?

    this movie was amazing.

    and I LOVE IT!

but, this is my favorite song,

he slits so many people's throat.

  • madamelero ur rite...much much blood :o

  • mann i no he is a creep like i will stell you is she like a opject ?

  • i luv this song it so amazin .....wootness to sad music

  • this song is creepy. antony creeps me out.

  • :'( this song is sad

  • you lot clapped at the end...did you see it in theatres? I was going to appluad(as you should with musicals) when I saw it but in my theatre I would've been like..banned...or something..o_o;;

thanks so much for uploading ^_^

  • they all had great voices. i thought helena [who plays mrs.lovett] had such a relaxing voice. as with johnny, he can really sing! it also helped that the blood was completely unrealistic, but when he cut signor pirelli's throat..that part was disgusting haha.

  • hahaha

Its so true about the blood!

I saw it with 2 guys (I am a girl) and one fo them was so amazed because I was laughing half the time. It was so great... and the goryness didnt really get to me that much.

  • I feel you, Johanna!!

  • excellent movie! is this the scene where he slits about 8 or 9 people's throats?

  • I hope that Johnny's nomined and win the Academy Award in 2008... He deserves since "Pirates Of The Caribbean", with the legendary Jack Sparrow...

  • Im not a fan of musicals but this movie was awsome!!!!!! the storyline was so nice the scenery just put you right there you have to see it!

  • Hehe. I loved when Johhny was slitting all their throats. <3 It was the funniest thing in the wordd.. The blood was all splurt splurt! out their throats x3 Ahh Johhny. You make me smile <3

  • lol i agree with you...me and my friend just laugh when johnny just slit there throats XP...but the movie was great and johnny's voice was amazing

  • Love to see all of them in the stage-version,in the West End,Broadway wherever. Laura Michelle Kelly (Lucy/Beggar woman)has a great voice and it's a very demanding piece of singing!

  • This movie was so good. I laughed so much! And the blood was awesome. It was so fake, but that just made the movie even better! I never realized how good Johnny Depp's voice was!

  • johnny is a stud

  • happy stalker love

  • Anyone remember the boy's name? Jamie Campbell something....The one singing "Johanna"....Honestly, they all had amazing voices, especially Johnny. Gorgeous duets with Alan Rickman...<333

  • Just saw the movie, it was absolutely amazing!

    I'm in love with it!

  • Me and my friend kept laughing...I felt so bad but seriously...he was just slitting throats and looking so calm and serene...we were like...I hope that never happens to me.

  • ugh! i saw it today and it was A-mazing! this was seriously my favorite song. I love it when jonny's all"oh, johanna blah blah blah"; meanwhile he's slitting throats. Everyone's like "Eww, he's slitting people's throats!", and I'm like "But it's to an upbeat tuuune!"

  • Oh, goodness. This was my favorite part of the movie! I mean, the happy, up-beat music, and the next thing you know, Sweeney slits a throat and they tumble down to the cellar XD It was hilarious for some reason...

  • omc. i love this song.

  • I loved this scene in the movie!! Their voices intertwining with the beautiful imagery...That was cool.

  • I saw this two weeks ago.. I had tickets to the world premiere. This is probably my favourite scene in the whole movie.

  • how in the world do you get tickets to the world premiere?!!

  • I hope to see more of Jamie Campbell Bower. I think he is a real talent.

  • For what it is, his singing is ok. Mainly because it is a movie and he doesn't really need to know how to sing strongly and project b/c they have high-tech mic's for that. At least he doesn't sing out of his nose like some people. I am just sad they cut Johanna. I like the three part harmony crazyness that normally happens there.

  • I saw the film and this scean rocks!

  • I saw this at 10:00 this morning (:

    It was AWESOME! =]

  • o___o Lucky betchhh~ I'm seeing it tomorrow. >DDD

  • heheheh! you'll love it!! =D

  • I'm sure I will. =DD So excited...

  • hahaha have you seen it yet? =D

  • Does anyone know where to get the songs, the ones when Johnny Depp sings? :)

  • He's singing in this one. He's the second one after Jamie Campbell Bower at the beginning

  • i'm glad the music is being recreated so faithfully with only a few cuts.

and oh my god, just the sounds of the throats being slit. i can't wait for this movie lol. it even sounds gory.

  • yeah, its not faithfull in the quality of singing however...

  • I know here the only reason they kept the rating so high was because of 'gory scenes' but I didn't think it was that bad.

  • the fun thing about this is, since there is no picture, you get to imagine it for yourself. It's especially fun if you've seen the stage production, cause then you're comparing the stage to the film and trying to think how Burton will make it work.

I can't wait for this movie, it's going to be amazing

  • this is one of the best songs! the first bit sounds so sad... :(

  • Brilliant. One of the show's best songs.

  • Doesn't it just burn you up that they had the audacity to cut the entire beginning of the story, "Attend the Tale -- The Ballad of Sweeney Todd?" What were they thinking???

    It's only THE ENTIRE STORY!

  • All musical choices were approved by Sondheim himself. Yeah, must take some audacity to cut things from your own show...

  • He didnt choose to he had no choice since depps daughter was sick on that day of shooting

  • that makes no sence...

  • Neither does spelling sense sence lol. They were shooting the Ballad of Sweeney Todd and all the reprises but Depps daughter was sick. He couldnt be at shooting so he couldnt do Sweeneys part at the end of the song. Originally the song was supposed to be in it but later was cut for lack of time

  • WHich is precisely why it says "Sweeney Todd AUDIO"

  • haba haba he is hot, sexy, perfect singer and he propaly he wont agry to this but the best dancer you go johnny depp HOPE I MEET YOU SOON!!!!! love atenea fernandez

  • I was just saying, the title of the song is Johanna-quartet. Its supposed to have Sweeney, Anthony, Johanna and the Beggar woman singing. Johanna sings "I'll marry Anthony sunday, anthony sunday" and so on. I'm just suprised that they wouldn't include that.

  • I think they cut out Johanna's part in this song since it's not as easy to show all four people singing at once on the screen as it is on stage, y'know?

And yes, this beggar woman does suck...

  • Ohh man I can't wait to see this song. One of my favorite songs from the show. You can just hear that this scene is gonna be gruesome.

Man this beggar woman sucks. What the hell.

  • the guy that plays anthony went to my school

  • I can't hear Johanna singing...

  • It's Sweeney singing ABOUT Johanna. :/

  • And she does sing a little bit, but I guess they cut that out, 'cause I can't hear her either. XD

  • actually it's Anthony singing about Johanna

  • Yeah, in the beginning. And from then on, it's a Sweeney-Anthony-Johanna-hobo lady (not putting the actual name for spoiler reasons) quartet.

  • it's not hobo lady, it's beggar woman.

  • Details, details. :/

  • i love him, he sings wonderfully

    cant wait for sweeney1!

  • I LOVE the slight hint of Australian accent he's using from the time Sweeney Todd spent in prison. Brilliant! :D

  • They aren't laughing at Johnny's voice..During Johanna he is doing something else other than singing ;-)...That's why this is one of my favorite songs/scenes...Johnny may not be as good as the original but he brings something unique to it..The only thing I am worried about is Helena. I know she sings a little bit; corpse bride. But, not as well as Patti in my opinion. But, I can't effing wait for this...

  • Somewhere around here, there's a really bad recording of "Epiphany" from the movie that just sends chills down my spine, and actually, Helena does a fairly decent job. True, she's no Patti (and thank GOD, no Angela Lansbury), but this is a movie adaptation, and it doesn't have to be broadway-esque to be amazing. :)

  • She just seems a little "thin" but I am a huge supporter of Tim Burton, and I very much trust his direction. If I were to choose any director for this adaptation, it would only be Tim Burton. Part of me was hoping that they'd bring something different than the musical, and it sounds like they do. I ain't bashin` ;-)

  • I agree. I do sort of miss the lush sound that Patti had, but it's all in interpretation. I trust Burton's judgement... I'm sure she'll be fine. :)

  • Angie scares the hell out of me.

  • Hahaha! Yeahhh... not the choice actress I'd have put in that role, but it did make it more interesting... :P

  • Truely, I think Helena would've made a better Beggar Woman. When I first heard she was Mrs. Lovett was I like, "...Really?" I'm sure she'll be really good, but she would probably be a better Beggar Woman. Then Toby wouldn't ahve to be so young (even though he's absolutely adorable. ^^)

  • Im actually worried about toby being so young.... : /

  • Helena wouldn't be a good beggar woman you dumb shit.

She's a brilliant actress who will be great for the role of Mrs. Lovett

  • I understand what you are trying to say however, being the great actress Helena is she would be brilliant as both Mrs. Lovett or the begger woman :]

  • Bwaygirl1234 - I'm not entirely sure about the movie adaptation, but from the clips I've seen Sweeney is slitting the throats of various customers that walk in for a shave as he sings this soothing song about his daughter. It's humorous for the irony, I guess. :)

  • spot on sah, its when hes ruining ppls shit ;)

  • okay so why are people laughing the ENTIRE TIME when johnny is singing??

  • you call yourself bway girl, but you dont know sweeney todd...

  • um, ddrfreak787, when did I say i didnt know sweeney todd?

I've actually BEEN in sweeney todd and seen the revival and the national tour, so you can just go shut up. thanks.

  • he is doing funny stuff the entire time- like serial mruder

  • That kid singing at the start is amazing.

  • that's johnny depp

  • it's the guy who plays anthony, not johnny depp

  • negative that is not johnny

  • ....thats not the point of a musical. Its a shame if we were to start making excuses for shit like this. No offense to you man, just stating we shouldnt lower the bar for singers

  • We're not. I acknowledge that Depp is not George Hearn or Len Cariou, but I also acknowledge that his acting will likely more than make up for his singing. I have never seen him play a part to my dissatisfaction.

  • but still, it pisses me off that movie MUSICALS constantly skimp on the whole MUSIC part. the only movie musicals i have been satisfied with have been chicago and tenacious d and the pick of destiny, both had excellent music and excellent (or almost excellent) singers who actually, heres a thought, COULD ACTUALLY SING!!

  • to bad singers who can sing are such a fucking rarity in the movies. Everything now adays is autotuned shit. Its unbelievable how deaf the public is, do they even hear the computerization of the voices? its not human!

sorry for the rant, i have a large chip on my shoulder :)

  • Well... Johnny's voice wasn't computerized. Granted, it could've been made better with technology, but if they'd done that then you'd be getting on their case for doing THAT.

Besides, I think the problem lies in trying to find ACTORS who can sing. It's a movie, so the acting has to be good as well as the music. In a musical they can have a bad or overly dramatic actor singing, but it's WAY more noticeable on the big screen.

  • no its autotuned and sounds "computerized" much of the time. Perhaps he may be able to sing in tune in real life, but directors simply slap on autotune now adays and its infuriatingly annoying (see: rent, hairspray and just about every other newer movie musical). And yes, his voice WAS made "better" by technology, I know exactly what they are doing, im a recording artist. They can easily change pitch, timber, tone, vibrato, anything with computers.

  • Now I think that perhaps many of the actors COULD have sang, but for some insane reason people (in both movies and music, see anything by disney) all the voices are tuned and changed to shit. Im disheartened and suprised that nobody is as pissed as I am.

And in terms of actors/singers argument...thats just bullshit. There are PLENTY of people who can both act AND sing well. See Matthew Brodrick, Nathan Lane, Jack Black (seriously hes a REALLY good singer) etc...

  • Actually, the digitization isn't a problem here; the voices aren't messed with. You're just hearing a really, really bad recording. It sounds like someone held a cheap microphone up to a speaker playing the music.

They might be messed with, but you can't tell from this recording.

  • negative sir, go listen to the other clips that have been put out, digitization IS a problem. however the guy playing antony seems to have a good voice, itd be a shame if he is super digitalized like everyone else.

  • Yes yes.

I can't stand digitization of voices, it sounds so unnatural and is unpleasant to listen to, I can barely listen to the radio anymore (and I rarely do) But I'm still pretty excited to see this show! Not because of Mr. Depp, just because I freaking LOVE Sondheim!

  • As a theatre kid, i know that in a lot of musicals they give up people who have amazing voices for people who dont for roles. Directors look for a certain look and attitude and adjust the music to go with the voice.

Depp has a mad look to him and he is certainly creppy. His voice is very harsh and hurt which is very similar to the character he is playing.

But I do agree they coulve been another person playing the role.

  • ill admit he is half convincing when he is speak singing. But otherwise he is MUCH to poppy and not intense for the part

  • I completely agree with you.

  • Rock on feathersandploon...music today is being ruined by laziness and (partially) technology.

  • no it isn't his name is jamie campell bower. but johnny comes in.

  • Who has the lyrics to this?

  • google it... DUH

  • Actually teeny goths sat through our entire performace of the musical with the Las Vegas Philharmonic when we played it a couple of yrs ago.

  • Better than I expected. The director and cast talent will make up for the singing missfires. I am sure it will come out expressive, spicy and well crafted... far better results than the dreadfull Phantom of the Opera movie...

  • hopefully, so far the singing has made me want to shoot something

  • Then go ahead and shoot yourself :)

  • But dont you wish you lawn hair and beard were all emo

  • At first i was like this: ?

Then I was like this: *giggle*

  • not enough to actually get people who can sing

  • :( loved the Phantom of the Opera movie :(

What didnt you like about it?

  • me too =D

i loved both those films =D

    yay =D

  • i think it will be good it seems like they are putting effort into it

  • I'm a little bit more reassured by this.. but not entirely... I really do enjoy the way he says 'Johanna'. Not really sure why, though. I really -really- like the way the beggar woman sounds. Thanks for posting :D

  • what this bit lacks in singing it makes up for in visuals

    don't worry

  • The first part is the character of Anthony singing. When he tempo picks up its Johnny singing

  • yes the stupid goth teeny giels and boys will ruin this but wont be able to sit threw songs like this so don't worry

  • good lol

  • haha. so funny. i love it :)

  • why does he sound autotuned?

  • Most musical movie actors end up autotuned, unfortunately. It's irritating, but it doesn't surprise me. Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler and Rosario Dawson's autotuning bugged me a lot more.

  • Hahaha

  • i never saw the musical play but the movie looks good with the music and Burtons touch

  • who else has chills from just listening to this?? i cant freakin WAIT to see this a dozen times...if not more

  • i am surprised at how good it is i was not sure of it since i never knew too much of it..SS wrote his??

  • wow johnny is singing that??

  • no...that is the "anthony" character...cant find the kid's name

  • WHAT?? i thought it was johny depp singing about his wife

  • the young voice is is the role of "anthony"....and that is Johnny singing with him, but that beautiful, clear voice is Jaime Campbell Bower

  • this movie is gonna be sweet but it's doomed to be ruined by girls/people who shop at hot topic, just like the nightmare before christmas was. just to let those kinds of people read this before the movie comes out: you're not going to be the only people to see it... IT'S NOT YOURS.

  • Oh, you never know. Maybe it's good to expose the emo kids to musicals. It might foster a love of musicals. They can stop cutting themselves and go try out for the damn play instead.

I'm a Sondheim freak, so I'm kind of salivating that Burton is directing some Sondheim. You think Burton would consider taking on Into The Woods?

  • i hope to god not...the singing in the movie blows ballsack

  • As a middle school teacher I can tell you that my emo students are very excited about seeing the movie and as inner city kids it's good for them to get exposure to musicals. Give the emo kids a break.

  • yes stupid teeny goths will pretend to like this but won;t be able to sit threw songs like this

  • The Begger woman make me laugh. You'll hear Anthony then BAM! Begger woman. The paly is great but I think this might be even better!

  • i didn't know this was an orignal musical so no danny elfman sadly

  • no danny, but the music in this is killer, you should check out some of the sound track.

  • YOU CAN'T BEAT SONDHEIM, BITCHES.

  • In agreement. There is no one like Sondheim. All of his musicals are different, yet engrossing and lovely. I can't even tell you how many times I've watched Sunday In The Park With George. God, Sondheim, how I love you and everything you touch.
