  • At the lift points

  • shouldn't the jack stand be placed at the location behind the jack on the frame? Isn't the location shown the "lift point" not the "stand point"?

  • i have ramps which is nice for changing the oil on this car. they were a garage sale find (only 5 bucks) but they're metal and heavy son uva guns. still beats removing the tire though, i think.

  • while removing the wheel, and the splash shield seems to give you easier access to the oil filter, it adds alot more work. i just crawl under reach up between the cv axle and the inner tie rod and use a oil filter cup and a ratchet to remove the filter.

  • damn it, i didn't think it would be this complicated. i miss my old jeep

  • What's wrong with getting oil on the sub frame?

  • @magreger Yes if you live in the salt belt let it run on the frame

  • Hey, this is excellent info. I had no clue how to change the filter, thanks much!

  • Wonderwall by Oasis :)

  • @rgrafton Haha I thought I was the only one who noticed it.

  • I want oil on my subframe, prevents rust.

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO - I couldn't find my filter for the life of me! I will use this tip for the next time. Silly question but is it the same on an SL2?

  • @America200yo Yes all Saturn S-series 1991-2002 are the same

  • Just changed the oil following these recommendations, worked perfectly thanks very much

  • Ooorrrr, you can just jack the car up and get underneath it. its a lot easier than taking the wheel off and messing with hose damn pins.

  • we had a tough time getting oil filters off also, i purchased a cap style wrench in hopes it will make life easier, but who knows wish me luck!

  • Thank you for the video. I FINALLY changed my own oil filter today, thanks to your tips.

  • do you have a video on how to change a valve cover gasket on a 96 saturn sl2

  • @nidagichole Not at this time

  • Comment removed

  • @LaSantaDeVita If one becomes available for replacement i will surely video it.

  • ARRGGh! changed my oil filter last week because it was damaged. took me 1 1/2 hour and an assistant to get this thing off!! ( it was stuck, damaged and there is no place for a oil filter remover) thanks again RP!

  • AahhAARGG ! I took my filter out because it was damaged. It took me 1 1/2 hour and a assistant to get this thing out! ( it was really stuck and there is no place to take an oil filter remover) thanks again rich!

  • would this be any different on a 2000 L series?

  • Now that is a creative way to change your oil. I personally think that's WAY too much work! I drive both our Saturns (2) up on ramps and do it. The only pain in the rear is getting the filter to come off! I can't find a filter wrench that will loosen it without a lot of work!

  • stab it with a long screwdriver and use that to break it free

  • @jimwalt

pain in the ass indeed, I use a pair of channellocks.

  • Hey rich,

Can I just drive the car up on a set of ramps, thats if the front bumper is not too low to clear the ramps

  • Yes that is the way i do the change.

  • How are you going to take tire off if it's on the ramp?

  • Thanks, gotta do my kids car this weekend, he is out of state and never changes oil..........kids!!!!

  • I hear ya

  • Would this video help with my 98 SC1?

  • yes

  • Very informative, thank you for making the video. The video showed me various part locations, and saved me hours of reading. I can be working on the car quicker!

  • how come the manual states that it is bad for oil to get on the axle boot when whats inside the boot is grease. Grease and oil and much alike, no?

  • Hi, im switching my sl2 over to high milage synthetic oil. How many quarts of oil do i need to do my oil change?

  • 4 quarts with a new filter

  • hey richpin06a, I have a question that is somewhat unrelated. You seem to know Saturns pretty well so I figured I'd ask. I have a 1991 Saturn SC DOHC and it burns oil. After much investigation, the problem most likely are the rings. I don't want to get a ring job because of the expense and because the car is old and living on borrowed time if you know what I mean. Anyway, I was wondering if you knew any remedy that could slow to stop the oil burning? Thanks.

  • Yes i do,Google "MMO Soak"

  • i actually find it easier to just slide under the car without removing that panel. but this is an excellent video for clausterphobes or those afraid the car will fall on them. thanks richpin for another great vid. you're saving us thousands of bucks a year!

  • Need to 'update' again, tell us what size the drian plug is.

We're lazy and/or don't have time to go up and down with wrenches to figure out the size.

  • drain plug is a 9/16! :)

  • very detailed video thx!

  • I just added this video last week. Why did you re-upload it?

  • I mean I just watched this video

  • I updated it to show the actual jack handle in use which i didn't have in the first video and the oil drain tip using the modified oil container.
