Beautiful...love those DX harps! Some great tracks that use them are: Storms in Africa (Enya), I Dreamed a Dream (original London cast of Les miserables), and my favorite...Falling in the Garden by Ray Lynch. Check em out!
I got a DX7 recently, but dang that thing is intimidating! If anybody knows any links where I can learn some FM synthesis basics, it would be much appreciated!
To "DX5" (the guy who posted this video): Just curious, where are you from?
The DX series synthesizers are very expressive instruments. Such a shame that most people used presets only throughout the years. Chick Corea once spent all night programming one sound on his TX802 (DX7II rack version) to get it perfected and then he drove the sound from the KX5 remote MIDI controller. Biran Eno supposedly was a very good DX7 programmer. Anyway, call me old, but I am jaded by today's do everything push-one-key-play-pattern workstations. I long for the DX7 and D-50 days...
Hi just curious whats some of the best DX7 sound out there? i own one and so far i havent been able to find a cool sound on the DX7, i Like my juno 6 much better but i knw its not fair to compare an analog to a DX7 so my question is, whats one of the coolest DX7 sounds out there? so far im not very impressed with the dx7
@mexmetal666 DX7 can be an acquired taste. It's definitely not an instant gratification instrument, aside from the ubiquitous electric piano sounds, that doesn't really sound like an electric piano, but it is one of the most playable sounds on the DX7, especially with the sustain pedal. The DX7 can also have fantastic lead sounds (Chick Corea is to prove it) and with a bit of ingenuity, with some tasteful modulation wheel, ptich bend, and aftertouch application, you can sound really cool.
@mexmetal666 maybe not the coolest, but you may have some ideia about what it can do, search for "jexus" channel, in youtube, and look up for the dx7 demo (couldn´t post the link, sorry)...
Love the dx7 great synth.I prefer analogue synths but I do admire the science behind FM,I think a guy called John Chowining invented FM synthesis or at the least advanced previous primitive experiments.Apparently he offered it to all the big american synth companies and they turned it down hence the reason the japanese Yamaha bought it.
10x for the info! I've read on the web these days about the upgrades made to the DX7 II, the layering capabilities, keyboard split, etc, but nothing about patches compatibility. I've asked this because I'm planning these days to buy a DX7 IID. :D
That was bronski beat smalltown boy...One of my favorite tunes... I wish to get sheet music, or tabs for that song.. I have the first version of the DX7, and its pretty good sound quality.. I can make metallic beats, or other eccentric tones.. Nice work for your video.
Yes, Enya overused the D50 in lot of ways. Probably, Caribbean Blue harps are coming from it, but as she used a DX7 too on her productions I am not sure which one was it.
Love your videos man. Keep up the good work! Also, could you please tell me how you got your dx7 mk1 backlit? I've looked all over the net and cant find any info on how to do it.
I've found mine on Ebay, around 30 Euro (over 40 $). (It can also be found cheaper in electronics shops, but they would require to find the right lcd and to wire it for feeding the backlight).
They played both. On Black Celebration tour, they played the first version (the one I am playing here). And at Music for the Masses age, they played the II FD version (they played it on Pasadena #101 concert, it was boxed under the Emu Emax.
dx7 is a cool synth, mark 1 is the best in my opinion, as its a little bit warmer sounding

Can the patches from the DX7 be uploaded in a DX-7 IID or IIFD? (or if not converted with a software?)
johnspecker 2 years ago
Yes, they can. No coversion needed, as basically the DX7 II are two DX7 engines.
The easiest way to send the sound is via MIDI dump

Hi reznor:
thanks for your comment.
I've found mine on Ebay, around 30 Euro (over 40 $). (It can also be found cheaper in electronics shops, but they would require to find the right lcd and to wire it for feeding the backlight).
Regards.. DX5
DX5 3 years ago
Ah I see. Thanks. Isn't it possible to find a backlit lcd with a 14 pin header?
ReznorSharp94 3 years ago
Yes, it is. But it is needed to feed the backlight pin. Not a difficult operation for sure.
Anyway, I decided to buy this because I saved lot of time seeking for the same LCD. It was more practical for me.
Cheers.

Siento responder tan tarde, no me habia fijado en el mensaje, lo siento!.
En el II FD son asignables por patch. En el MK1 no recuerdo bien, pero lo veré en el estudio y te diré.
Un saludo.
