Long socks is great when wearing proper outfits, otherwise it can feel too slutty if done wrong.

The main problem with shorter skirt was the entire leg was showing and thus feel naked. Some people use longer boots to cover that, but longer socks was a stroke of genius since it doesn't limit the type of shoes you must wear to make the leg feel "dressed" while retain the appeal of the shorter skirts. (Not that naked legs can't be good, it is just long socks complete the outfit)

To tell you the truth...This makes me sad. I have three pairs of these socks (I LOVE THEM!) And when I wear them I get called a slut, skank, prostitute, or hooker (my mother has called me skimmply as well). Ive grown to think that even wearing shorts with them is crossing some invisible line. I like them and they add something to the outfit I am wearing.

I guess North America isn't ready for this kind of fashion sense...
