  • Friggen cool!

  • What kind of engine is that?

  • Fantastic.

  • Hey, you still got all your hair - lucky!

    Jones

  • @msvoner Wonder if I could sell it on eBay?

  • @LarryCanFly Larry, I don't doubt you could do it! Kick-ass! :>)

  • This may be off the subject of what you want comments regarding..I apologize if wasting time.. I am looking for a "small" turbine engine that is applicable to use

on a bicycle..yes..i mean it lol...most states are outlawing piston engines measured in cc's...I want to suprise them...

Does any have a source on net I might inquire with..or can Larry just build me one?

  • SooLarry Did you buy this turbine and make the turbo prop system and mount it to the turbine yourself.. or was it already a turboprob system aleady?? .. Wheres a good lace to find these turbines??

  • fantastic larry ,,,,, i can see your enthusiasm , and well you should be ,,, turbines are such a natural for aviation , maybe some day you can get rid of the prop , , fuel consumption will no longer be a problem when someone come up with a reburner type engine ,, maybe outdoing any recip engine as well ,, you must have figured by now that i love love love turbines ,, even at my age ,,68 ,, you are one of my heros ,,

  • @LarryCanFly Hi I'm trying to contact Jon or JC you may know him? He has a gmail address, he has an engine I'm interested in, can you ask him to contact me please? regards Ian F Bennett

  • "Woo hoo it works!" LOL awesome stuff! Love it!

  • That is very cool

  • Energy sources without the need for fuel or energy input exist ,But Millions are spend in supressing that information,Get the blueprints for a free energy motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Join the energy revolution!

  • I hate you Larry!

  • @Lifeatthesharpend It's a Lucas CT-2023, highly modified, about 85HP.

  • Holy ----!

WAY cool. VERY cool. Inspiring. Awesome. Wow.

  • that is so awsome i want to build an ultralight!!!

  • u r crazy

  • cool

  • That was awesome! I wish you were my neighbor :-)

  • hahahaaaa! amazing! i'd love to see one of those in real life! must be so funny :') Pilots take years to get lisensed on a single engine turboprop and you just install one to an ultralight! :') great job!

  • Go for it!

  • Cool? No. Freaking awesome? YES!

  • i love it man. do you have to worry about exhaust temp melting things? i get that people would put a turbo prop on a ultralight for dependability, but i don't think you're making much more power than a lot of rotax out there today, and turbines are hungry-er.

  • @swimdconswim Yes, high temps are worrisome. Ruins turbine blades. Yes, a Rotax 447 is much better in almost every way. I'm doing the turbine here for the cool sound, no vibration, and to learn about turbines, and for fun.

  • looks like Larry's flying thru this trees !..nice..

  • This is extremely cool! Thanks for posting. :-)

  • Dam 86 HP for that little jet? Aamazing.

  • how much does an APU set one back?

  • You are such a real cool guy! Man like you make the world go round and funny!!

  • Ever wonder why the legal limit for a single seater ultralight is 254lbs? And for a double seater its, i think, 497? How stupid is that? If you're going to put a wieght limit on them why not say a solid 250 for a single and 500 for the double? What's with the random numbers? I say stick a bicycle seat anywhere on it and presto! It's a two seater! An extra 243lb leash.

  • Sec. 103.1 Applicability. This part prescribes rules governing the operation of ultralight vehicles in the United States. For the purposes of this part, an ultralight vehicle is a vehicle that: (a) Is used or intended to be used for manned operation in the air by a single occupant;

  • Larry. Just a comment from a novice flyer. I would suspect that your prop is only turning 2000 rpm due to its pitch. If you could reduce your pitch (finer, say , 1 degree) you might see 2400 rpm, allowing the turbine to turn at 48,000 rpm (sounds about right). Appears the prop "load" is loading the turbine (?). Just a thought. Loved the video. N-6395T

  • Good work!

  • damn dude, thats awsome

  • Completely Awesome! Great job!

  • Awesome!!!

  • Absolutely AAAA - Mazing. Every credit to you Larry.

Guess you'll have seen my Jet Powered Hang Glider clip on You Tube, But you've definitely gone one better.

    I've been flying MicroLytes & Hang Gliders for 33 yearsand I thought I'd just about seen everything. But this - - - - !

Incidentally I use the same type of battery in my T-Rex 600 Electric Heli.

    Hugh the Railmon

  • Hi Hugh, Thanks for your comment! Absolutely yes I've watched many times the "Jet Powered Hang Glider" video that you posted! Is that you flying it?

Has it been flying much? I need to fly mine again, maybe next summer, it's really fun and people at the airport love hearing it come in and watch me fill-er-up at the Jet-A pump.

  • Incredible. What a nice machine.

  • Looks like the battery that my friend uses in his trex 700e

  • larry , did you build the turbine from scratch?

  • @TheRancherman61 Build turbine from scratch? Not this one, - wish I could.

  • that's a first for me

  • Wow! Bet you never get board... I can hear ATC now. Ultralight 11X on approach please slow to 250 knts. for landing aircraft. HA HA that would be awesome.

    Or

Ultralight 11X cleared for take-off steep ascent approved! I'm jealous..

  • you're my hero

  • dude thats some high tech stuff for an ultralight

  • where can u get a tiny turboprop like that? and does the engine just drive the pusherprop?

  • Careful with the Li-Po's, hate for it to blow up and do damage to the aircraft or you. Pretty amazing power density though for such a tiny battery!

  • Yes I've heard about the danger. However, a manufacture confirmed with me that it's only when re-charging them! I have fancy computer controlled charges in the shop. One charge will start the engine 6+ times.

  • lary, dont worry about weight..get a big enough engine on that thing n u wont need wings!

  • There is an untralight for sale for $1500 on craigslist in Ohio

  • wow thats amazing :)

  • awesome, i can't wait untill i'm older so can start this hobby

  • Very cool, thanks for putting this up.

  • Have to many questions than I can ask here! First where would I look to find a small turbine or jt.

    Thanks, Garry

  • I hold a private pilot license in Brazil, where i live, and i've just discovered your channel, Larry. Outstanding job in your toy. You're the kind of guy that creates new kinds of technology that are used to improve efficiency and safety in aviation.

Keep inventing, keep tryin' and flyin'.

    Cheers, Danilo

  • larry why dont you construct your own small aircraft?

  • Larry what kind of ultralight is that...It looks like a GT 400...Cool video.....Kurt

  • Yes Kurt, actually it's a GT280 circa 1985 which evolved into the GT400. The 280 had a tiny (road runner looking) nose and no bulkhead behind the seat. I adapted "wood" wings from a (Team Aircraft) HiMax. I think they are way nicer than the tube+fabric and weigh about the same or less! Besides I broke the original wings and found the Hi-Max on eBay at a good price. Thanks for your comment Kurt. mybest, larry

  • like the video. What kind of license do you need to fly an ultralight and can you take off from anywhere?

  • @JONKYTZ License to fly? Meet Part-103 requirements and you are free as a bird to fly - almost anywhere in the good ol' U.S. A. ! God bless America!

  • very nice video Lary thanke you!

  • that was a double R dammit sorry for that Larry

  • Google indicates you are the only person on earth to write the words "double R dammit" ... congrats. I have no clue what you mean. But thanks, because the double R stuff looks intersting - though over my "head".

  • He spelled your name incorrectly in the first comment.

    Nice ultra :-)

  • Ha! Funny, I noticed the errant e but not the missing r in my name, even after being told! Not even now! Sometimes it's the little things that can get ya. I work at checking the little things, and the big ones too, before I take-off. Thanks for the clarity, mybest, lary,

  • How much gear reduction do you use?

  • Hi Pete,

Good quesiton, the double nested 20 pound planetary gearbox is 20:1 but so I'm seeing only 2000 RPM with my IVO 372 prop so does that mean the free turbine is turning only 40,000 rpm? hmmmm. It can do 70k. Where the heck is my missing HP? And how do I get it? I'm thinking if I can find it and put it to work then I could go .... um, .... vertical :-)) man, that would be fun.

  • Not bad at all!

  • Very cool Larry. I enjoyed the videos very much.

  • looks cool, i've been working on one too ((SIKE))

  • Wow Larry, you did a very nice job constructing your toy. Just curious how much do you have wrapped up in that?

  • Thanks, ... a guy could probably make one like this with $10k of surplus parts - plus a whole lot of hours.

  • Hello larry i really enjoyd the video thanx :)

  • fly it, man!

  • OK --- check it out, I flew it yesterday, just for you man - and it was really cool, a very beautiful day, super smooth calm air, sun and all, what a high. Search Larry flies Turboprop.

  • This is very cool. Are you going to get this plane in the air? Would like to know more about this project and its progress. Did you build this engine specificly for this plane and did you build the plane yourself? And from your name I derive that you can fly. Are you going to be the test pilot?

  • I didn't build it from scratch but assembled parts from two different ultralight kits and adapted the engine from a APU/Starter turbine. Yes - I'm now a DIY jet aircraft test pilot! Checkout my latest video. Thanks!

  • How much does the turbine weigh compared to a standard 2 stroke? Also, how much power do normal ultralight engines output versus your 86hp turbine?

  • Same weight as a 40hp Rotax 447 but twice the fuel consumption.

  • Very cool, I bet its rock solid, would have thought more power though. We have the same gecko GPS lol.

  • Yes, so far. It seems to just run and run and run --- nice when everything goes around and around in the same direction. Feed it oil and fuel, keep it cool, and it's like the Energizer Bunny Rabbit, just keeps on going. Makes me feel good at 2000 feet on a warm day.

I need to try burning french fry oil, then I'll not only sound good but I'll smell good too!

  • What for a type of turboshaft is it? It looks really nice....small and light device...how much HP output on the shaft?

  • It's a starter/APU for Harrier Jump Jet. 86HP. Made by Lucas/Rotax, model 2026.

  • Just curious, aren't starter engines *not* designed for continuous duty?

  • Yes, you are correct, but this one is also an APU. Tag says 1.5hrs in APU mode. APU mode had a combustion chamber pressure of 16psi, and full throttle is about 38psi. So my takeoff is in the "Starter" range and my level flight 50mph is about 25psi... so I'm running it out of spec --- but less than 40 minutes because I can carry only 5 gallons of Jet-A. 38psi burns over 8gph and 25psi about 6gph and I try to have at least a gallon in reserve. Thanks for the question.
