Is this the same Joe Frank who records those deeply personal stories and narrations for KCRW and Public Radio, the story teller? (I think his work might have done some work for Playboy as well, writing episodes of shows that no one ever saw.)
I think my idea of Heaven would be a small town in the 70's listening to real musicians like Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds on my old stereo for all eternity! And if God was the kind of God I think he is he will let my favorite dog join me. :)
This classic sounded good on AM radio while cruising around on that 50 cents a gallon gas. Little cuties riding shot gun in those bell bottoms and halter tops made it sound even better. I would love to live just one of those weekends again. HOW ABOUT YOU?
Keep in mind, this was recorded on (most likely a Scully 280 or similar) which is called the "slave" unit. Then copies of this "slave" tape are made to use. (you would be crazy to use an original slave to mix). This copy was used to mix the recording; when the got the sound right, they made a "mix" tape. These mix tapes were then copied (same reason) and sent to mastering lab where they added compression and EQ and then again re-recorded to form the "master" tape.
@analyzingfunny so, what we are ultimately hearing is something that is almost 6 times removed from the original. I wish I could hear these original slave tapes, or someone would release them, so we can mix it ourselves.
! Scully did make lathes, but when that era ended he decided to make REALLY HEAVY, sturdy, tape recorders "heavy lathe style" and machine the entire top out of a 2 inch pice of solid aluminum.
does sound like elvis, esp. at 1:09. even getting that little tremor in the voice on the word "ring" "you" and "anything", even with the southern accent. a distinctive feature of this song was how the keyboardist went down the ivories after the horn intro at :10 and before the second chorus at 1:31 then coming back up in stacattoed thirds to go into the third chorus at 2:01
I worked with Ben Benay who arranged this record. This was one of my favorite songs growing up and what a cool thing to work with the arranger later in life.
Henry and I used to 'patrol' the back alley every summer during those late 60's and early '70's. We would put on dress up 'police' uniforms and make all the little kids in the neighborhood pay tolls to ride through our alley. Hank had a transistor and we would turn it on full blast as this Song and other stuff from Motown played. Man, what fun those times were, and how much I miss those carefree days especially in this era of Lunacy..
This song reminds me of better times, easy friendships, crushes, and rolling with the top down. Thanks Sandy(softest lips in North America) and "the guys" for a couple of really awesome summers and a lifetime of memories.
I heard this song this week on WRBK in Charlotte, NC and couldn't figure out the title! THANK YOU, YouTube and random searching! ( I though it was "Don't Leave Me Drowning In My Own Tears!)
This song was playing in our blue Rambler, July of '71 as Mom took me to Summer school. In so many ways that summer seems like so far away, in so many ways as if it were yesterday. I wish for one moment it was truly yesterday. There are so many days where to live in the simplicity of those days would be heaven. Those who lived in those carefree days know of what I speak.
I have a memory of this song connected to playing Putt-Putt golf at the course on George Washington Hwy in Portsmouth, VA in 1971. While we played a round of Putt-Putt I remember hearing it on the radio played over course PA system. Funny how certain songs are connected to a precise time and place.
Joe Frank Carollo was from the Mississippi Delta (Leland, Mississippi). Joe Frank and his band were originally recorded in my hometown of Cleveland, Mississippi at WCLD back in 1961. Who knew at that time he would go on to fame and fortune. Love their music!
Crazy how I never realized how very happy I was back in 1970. Only 12 and on the cusp of teenhood. Music just had a texture back then that's hard to explain. It made the heart soar. I remember listening to this on a teeny mini transistor that I used to clip onto my coat on the walk to school. It was bright orange. It was such a great accomplishment to get the songs to come in clear without the static. That was part of the magic. Music had to be worked for.
This song sounds very Grass Roots ish & the members of the Grass Roots were annoyed that the songwriter/producer didn't offer them the tune. Has those classic horns which all the Grass Roots hits had. H, JF & R had a #1 w/ fallin in love which is a beautiful song & Winners & losers should've been a bigger hit.
GREAT song but what does the city on the clip have to do with anything? Anyway, this guy singing sure sounded like Elvis when I first heard this song many years ago! :)
@theYguy300 right on man. 1971. elvis had to love th song. surprising he didn't cover it. curious to know if he added more brass to his 70s sound as a result, maybe in time for his 1973 hawaii live show. bettr bet I'll be studying that silly query on my end. thx & peace
@theYguy300 truth is it fooled Elvis's mother also She thought it was him and even called to tell him how much she liked his "new" song. What a great group this was, 70s had some great harmonies and songs with meaning.
That's impossible! You must be thinking of another song. Gladys Presley died in 1958 so she could not have been listening to this song on the radio in 1971. But you're absolutely right about the 70's, that decade produced some of the best music known to humanity with so many musical genres and styles emerging. It was a great time for music and a good time to be alive and even though I was just a kid, I'd love to go back and experience it all again but be a little older.
@bigtimcny I agree with you 100%!! The 70's had great harmonies and great songs. Speaking of Elvis, I'll bet that he would have done a very nice version of this song! I like how you mentioned how his Mom thought it was his song, and she really liked it. Thanks for sharing!
@theYguy300 It was actually offered to Elvis and he passed on it, A year later he said in a interview what a great song it was, It sounds just like me.
Cheap gas in relation to this decade maybe but goodness gratious me it was exspensive in relation to that decade. However there was much better music no doubt about that and thats in relation to any time.
@TheDorkman42 lol not to mention remember the gas rationing??odd and even days ..depending on the number on your license plate..long gas lines...but wow the music was awesome...the best ever..along with the 50s and 60s included....
This was a hit in the days when music was music, not the junk being made today. And America was what America used to be - a strong, powerful, proud, patriotic nation. Not the weak, effete, wimpy, bankrupt nation it is today, overrun by aliens, terrorists, people dependent upon government, and women in burqas of whom you can only see their eyelids and nostrils.

I love this music. I was in high school and had a 1969 Z28 camero and all of the woman were hotties especially all of the ones we loved and lost. No better era of music
i miss the good old days...whats this emeinem rap crap? what has life become? what happened to TV shows? what happened to the people? life isn't just that fun anymore...i remember going with my brothers to a little hill and roll down it. I WANT TO GO BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!
I was this shy 3rd grader in a Northwest Ohio elementary school during the apex of this Hit. I didn't have to deal with selfish, self-centered and paranoid client at that time. Instead I wondered if I had enough nickles to buy an icecream from the Icecream Truck on the way home from school. I was prematurely worried what the the 3rd grade girls thought of me as I walked home on that 1/2 mile trip from Slocum Elementary. I'd give anything for just one day back then.
I remember listening to this on a mixed album of what I considered at the time "rock" songs...very young and could only play the record player when my sister was gone..because she wouldn't let me touch it...lol
Although I'm 55 years young now. I can still see the girls dancing to this song and the grass roots at the local jukebox, halter tops a bouncing and big elephant bell bottoms swaying..... Ahhhh the memories :)
This song belongs that short period in pop music where the chorus was well crafted...they seemed to save everything for the chorus. They let all the stuff just fly. I'm really quite used to that, and when music got quiet in the early nineties, I checked out. Who needs wimpy music?

I remember hanging out that summer at our community swimming pool, hearing this song over and over on the loudspeaker courtesy of the local radio station. I was only like 9 years old and had no clue what the song meant, but to this day every time I hear it I can almost smell the Coppertone suntan lotion and chlorine. A fun memory.
Summer time '71 and enjoying a chili dog and rootbeer at Dagon's Drive thru. Jenny and I would usually catch the drive in Movies later in the evening.
It was the summer of 71 I was 13. I used to hide in the back yard in these bushes and smoke my Mom's "Black Cat" cigarettes and listen to this song on a transistor radio. That was my endless summer! Soon I'd have a part time job, a full time job . I closed my eyes and 40 years evaporated, all the while, this great song along the way kept me safe.1971 Seems like yesterday.
wow! I think you summed it up for alot of us. Thanks for the memories! I was 5,( born 1966) but my Dad was a musician so I grew up pretty quick especially when it came to music!
wow! I think you summed it up for alot of us. Thanks for the memories! I was 5,( born 1966) but my Dad was a musician so I grew up pretty quick especially when it came to music! Been listening since birth! Go DAD!!!!
This is a great tune, only thing is that it came out smack dab in the middle of my first ever heartbreak!!! I couldn't listen to this song for years without feeling sad... getting kinda misty eyed now even! Amazing how these old songs from our youth hit such a chord to this day!
@hotstuffandicecream Like you this one brings back fond memories of a great era for me
Another song I'll never forget is The night has a 1000 eyes. Being on the beach on a warm summer night with one of those sweeties on a big blanket & listening to him singing the night has a thousand eyes on our transistor radio is something I'll never forget.but I wonder if it was because the girl was adorable or was it because the song was so suited to the time & place. Whatever. Its nice to reflect on

@hotstuffandicecream oh, you summed it up so perfectly! Don't forget the wooden paneling down in the basement room! Three Dog Night, The Guess Who, Farrah Fawcett hair styles, Chevy Vans, Bowling Alleys, The Fishin' Magician by Ronco, LP's, 45's, Happy Days, Fourth of July Picnics, CB radios, I could go on...
@hotstuffandicecream wearing cute hot pants, shag haircuts, going to the show which was still a double feature for a 1.00 which included what it costs to get in the show and goodies, cool suede coats with fringe
@hotstuffandicecream Hello! I am Jean from MARTINIQUE.... you forgot to mention the graffities on the walls, subways, etc.... music blasting out of the transistor radio.....week end nights at Times Square.... the Night Club THE CHEETAH...Boy,oh boy! That was an ERA!...
@hotstuffandicecream I have basically the same memories you do, except I was the girl wearing the halter top :) The 70's really were the best time to be a teenager. I had the VW bug that I buzzed around in, gas 69 cents per gallon, five dollars filled my tank and lasted almost two weeks, going to the drive in on the weekends...where has the time gone?
@hotstuffandicecream You got that right! I remember sneaking out with my friend Lori and taking my step-mother's car and driving fast without seatbelts and smoking cigarettes and feeling so so so so so cool and hip and free -- always great tunes and a feeling of unlimited prospects and endless summers -- I'm glad I was was born when I was and got to have all that. So different, so innocent; who could've imagined... texting? Autotune? Lady Gaga? Not me!
I love this song, especially the bottom of the brass and just the overall orchestration. Wow. And yea, I have shower sung this a number of times, its my perfect key and one of the few songs I an "belt out" and stay on key. Of course, I probably sound like cr@p to everyone else!
God, I loved this song, I loved this time! I was a sophmore in high school the year this came out. It brings back memories of that summer when Suzanne and I would cruise in the old man's Pontiac. I can still hear my Mom out the back porch door as I was taking off, "Mikey, don't be past 11 hon." Suzanne and I were never in before 2am.
@jeff62rey I was also a sophmore in high school, when this record was on the charts. I think I probably drove my Mom crazy playing this on my stereo over and over again. LOL Actually She liked it too! I still have that old 45 rpm, but now I can come to You Tube and listen to it, to my heart's content. What great songs there were in the early 70's.
i highly recommend 70s MUSIC EXPLOSION CD COLLECTION!!! it is a little pricey but if you burn the cds and share them with your buddies, then it is totally worth it!! 12 cds of hits from the 70s!!
@ji61m My bad, as they say. i got them confused with someone else. they were all in fact born in the US but only one in L.A. according to the info i have.
@jasonwheel Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds are all originally from LA, where they first formed as a group after having played together for several years as members of The T-Bones.
A long time ago Merv Griffen was having live shows for a whole week. He had these guys on there, and after they played this song, Merv went and asked who Hamilton was and they said that was the name of their high school. Then he asked who Joe was and they said one guys name was "Joe Frank' and Reynolds was another guy in the band. I was as confused as Merv Griffen was... but it sure was good music..... I think I like it a lot more than Merv did anyway.
@2CATS1POSSUM The name came from 3 of the 4 guys in the band. Don Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds. All who also recorded under the band name "The T-bones". They had a hit in the 60's titled "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach Is In) that was used in the famous Alka-Seltzer commercial.
@trtomthedrummer2 I didn't know their full names until now!! I thought they were Black guys for years until I saw their picture. Truly strong voices and great harmony!!
Anakina, you say that "Elvis told a story on how his mother called him and said how she loved his new song. He could have easily pulled this off in concert."
Either you are wrong, Elvis was wrong or the story was wrong. Elvis' mother died in 1960. This song didn't come out until 1971. So unless she got AM radio up in Heaven, I doubt she could have heard this song.
Is this the same Joe Frank who records those deeply personal stories and narrations for KCRW and Public Radio, the story teller? (I think his work might have done some work for Playboy as well, writing episodes of shows that no one ever saw.)

Classic fun song to listen to when I was 14. I would not trade those songs back then for anything on today's charts.

I remember listening to this on a mixed album of what I considered at the time "rock" songs...very young and could only play the record player when my sister was gone..because she wouldn't let me touch it...lol

Three Dog Night, The Guess Who, Farrah Fawcett hair styles, Chevy Vans, Bowling Alleys, The Fishin' Magician by Ronco, LP's, 45's, Happy Days, Fourth of July Picnics, CB radios, I could go on...

So different, so innocent; who could've imagined... texting? Autotune? Lady Gaga? Not me!

I read somewhere that this was actually written with plans for Elvis to
sing it but the song was rejected for whatever reason. Too bad, it sounds perfect for him.

@jasonwheel What do you mean they aren't American? They're a 1970's trio from Los Angeles, California!
ji61m 5 months ago
@ji61m My bad, as they say. i got them confused with someone else. they were all in fact born in the US but only one in L.A. according to the info i have.
jasonwheel 5 months ago
@jasonwheel Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds are all originally from LA, where they first formed as a group after having played together for several years as members of The T-Bones.
moproducer 5 months ago
A long time ago Merv Griffen was having live shows for a whole week. He had these guys on there, and after they played this song, Merv went and asked who Hamilton was and they said that was the name of their high school. Then he asked who Joe was and they said one guys name was "Joe Frank' and Reynolds was another guy in the band. I was as confused as Merv Griffen was... but it sure was good music..... I think I like it a lot more than Merv did anyway.
2CATS1POSSUM 6 months ago
@2CATS1POSSUM The name came from 3 of the 4 guys in the band. Don Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds. All who also recorded under the band name "The T-bones". They had a hit in the 60's titled "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach Is In) that was used in the famous Alka-Seltzer commercial.
