A truly lush, exotic film. This film was done with style and class, something rarely seen in horror films today. The sublet lesbian undertones are very well done.
Otto Krueger was actually good as a rather unorthodox hero, but the argumentative banter between him and his rich fiance/secretary (Marguerite Churchill), got annoying after awhile and felt like time filler.
i kinda wanna c this. i love old movies like this, all thanks to my grandpa. he useed to stay in my basement and watch old movies like this. but he died. :'( i like watching these in his memory.
I have this one on VHS. In the beginning there is a great scene where Countess Zaleska and Sandor burn Dracula's body in some sort of ritual. ...very eerie and atmospheric.
This was a fairly good film that doesn't get the credit it deserves. Gloria Holden was really good as the vampire, a sympathetic one for a change. It is said that she was ambivolent to the project, and that came through as a self loathing that added to the character's pathos.
Great movie considered a B picture, Bela Lugosi was originally to portray the dead Dracula but the studios decided to use a wax dummy instead, a shame really. Also the "comic" sniping between Otto Kruger (Dr. Garth) and Marguerite Churchill (Janet) actually detracts greatly from the movie as this wasn't the arch kind of comedy in Bride of Frankenstein. But for a few changes this could have been a major horror film. Still one of my favorites though, very atmospheric.
@4036140361 I just finished watching this on the Dracula Legacy Collection. I had always been aware of this movie, but had never seen it--probably the only classic Universal monster movie I hadn't seen yet. It's a shame this excellent movie was largely forgotten between Lugosi's Dracula and Chaney's Son of Dracula--I honestly feel it's better than both. I didn't mind the comic banter between those two, and I found Marguerite Churchill to be very hot.
@radioclash81 you are absolutely right.i had seen every UNIVERSAL horror classic before this one."DRACULA'S DAUGHTER" is the last film produced by UNIVERSAL during it's first horror phase. it is an excellent movie but very underrated. GLORIA HOLDEN is perfect and OTTO KRUEGER and MARGUERITE CHURCHILL are a great pair and i too find CHURCHILL, attractive.BELA LUGOSI was slated to be in this movie. that never happened but there are a couple of stills with him and holden before the film was shot.
This is the primary source of the nonsense we have today culminating with Twilight; oh sure they're vampires, but they feel bad about it, so it's okay.
Of course Dan Curtis and Jonathan Frid's Dark Shadows and Barnabas Collins did a lot to revive this after years of Hammer studio's snatch-and-grab attacks.
But ultimately the more sympathetic portrayal was endemic in the Romantic period of literature, and their vampires.
When I was 14 I was told by two kids in my choir that I looked like the woman from Dracula's Daughter. Back then I had no idea what they were talking about. But now I can kind of see the resemblance.
Why is Otto Kruger credited first and Gloria Holden gets second credit? Duh, she played the title character, she's the STAR! She should be credited first! Or Universal wasn't keen on giving women top billing?
Although its main character was performed by Bela Lugosi, Universal gave top credits to Sidney Fox in "Murders in The Rue Morgue" (1932). But, of course, Sidney was flirting around with Carl Laemmle, Junior, by that time...
Otto Kruger was the nominal star of "Dracula's Daughter" (1936): he was 50 years old, a matinée idol since the 1920s, his career at its height when this film was produced.
For crediting matters, I suppose Gloria Holden was just a non-entity compared to Otto.
However, Gloria Holden would emerge as the REAL star of "Dracula's Daughter": a remarkable feature by Hollywood standards, I think.
She was not like the "typical female movie star" of the 30s (and so on...). She had a most exquisite beauty, though: brown hair, brown eyes, olive complexion, 5'5" tall, 124 pounds weight.
She was not like "Lugosi's daughter" (so to speak) either. She was very economical in poses and gestures: she used mainly that velvet voice and perfect diction she had.
i can never find this movie!

Loved this movie. Gloria Holden was very exotic and sensual. Not a blood and guts horror film and I like that about it.

Forget Gloria Holden. Nan Gray was cute here!
Bestmanme08 2 years ago
Yeah, I agree she was cute. Just different tastes. I like exotic more then cute.

Yeah but the thing is Nan Grey wasn't given a big role, she wasn't allowed to do a whole lot.
