This is not even a bumpy ride.I had once a flight in a CRJ700 as engineer and the PIC made a " moderate turbulence " callout when I felt allready unsave. And believe me, it´s a very big difference if you are sitting in the cockpit or in the last row. The aircraft is yawing and pitching a lot in the back, which you are not reallizing in the front
Hong Kong to LHT over Kazackstan was bad.I had sore spots on my elbows from rubbing in the arm rests...it did however shut 2 loud twats in front of us
Watched how to build a super jumbo wing last night, they stress tested the wing 4 meters up 2m down wouldnt want to see that out the window! its on bbc iplayer if you want to watch it.
@RockinToke that's because everyone for some reason thinks theyre some sort of flying guru and the turbulence they experience will outdo the one they see in the video. typical youtubers, everything is a competition.

Normal flight here. Severe turbulance is when the wing tips bend upwards 30 feet and the engines wobble around so badly that you think they will touch each other between flashes of lightning over the Mediterranean. Then have 300 liquored up Aussies puke at the same time and try to hold in your own meal. Death would have been welcomed. When Quantas landed in Frankfurt, many people kissed the ground including me.
the funny thing is that these planes are meant to withstand more than what people can handle as far a g forces befor anything begins to snap or break....basicly youll die befor the plane does
next time the say some severe turbulance just remember....the plane will most likley not go down, you on the other hand....ehhhh
This video put my mind at ease. I love flying in airplanes with large wingspans because during turbulence the long wings take most of the turbulence. I absolutely HATE small planes and jets because of their tiny wingspan so you really bounce all over the freakin place in one of those tiny things with a lot of turbulence. mmmm soothing. =-]
This isn't MODERATE turbulence !! My goodness ... this is really very light buffet, if anything ! I'd hate to see your reaction if you flew in SEVERE or EXTREME turbulence .... you'd certainly know you're 'alive' then !!
@AussieAviator I know right! :) I've been on a flight where people was screaming and some even crying, you can imagine how bad that turbulence was! LOL
My tutor at my Aeronautical Engineering course at college is an ex flight engineer on BA 747-200s. The worst turbulence he's been in was where coffee cups were flying into the air, baggage was falling from the over head compartments and he had to brace himself against the centre console so he didn't get flung into something.
@Brettv8 cheap airplane? ITS 747 God dammit! The wings have to be flexible or otherwise they would fall off. Shake your arm, it doesn't fall off. Now freeze your arm (to illustrate your iron) and start shaking it. From what I know it would break into pieces. Its clear you have never flown before.
actually wings are designed for flex as hollowcontact said on almost every commercial airliner out there if they werent then the wings would eventually break to the point where they would fall off
If I saw the wings bending like that I would never fly with that carrier again, obviously they buy the lower grade cheaper planes, they should use cast iron for the wings(like a good fry pan) - not cheap muck metal!!!. Its just amazing the wing did not just snap off. I would at least have got my money back. Cheap airplane!
@SNTMcentral Haha I was being sarcastic, making the typical ignorant youtube comments. A friend of mine reckons he went on the A380 during a relatively bumpy ride and was looking down an aisle and could see flex front to rear.
The old saying goes if you don't bend you break.. good day sir.
The wings are designed to flex, in order to stop cracks forming, they work almost like suspension in a car. They can flex further than anything you would experience during a flight.
@WeasleysNumerOneGirl You will have more chance of a car crash between now and then, when you get in a car you have no fear of crashing yet it will happen more than a plane crash, besides Virgin are one of the safest carriers with modern aircraft and top pilots, think of the staff who fly day in day out, they never expect to crash and neither will you
So I click on a clip with "heavy turbulence" only to see in the description it is suddenly only "moderate"... and the clip itself is a whopping 16 seconds of light turbulence *sigh*
Not heavy at all! I was in a plane and it all of a sudden dropped like 4 feet and then it was shaking quite a bit and the captain even came on an instructed everyone to remain calm and that we would be out of the turbulence shortly.
You know that little air vent and call button array over your seat? When there's a fairly recognizable imprint of that on the top of your head, that's heavy turbulence.
What I most like about flights in latitudes about 45 is that pilots first fly north then fly east. In a map it looks as though it is curve but infact planes go always straight.
A man and a woman are sitting next to each other on a trans-atlantic flight in a Boeing 747-400. The aircraft encounters severe turbulence and the man, looking out the window at the wing bouncing around, gradually looks more and more worried.
The woman, noticing, says "Don't worry, I'm a flight attendant and this is perfectly normal."
