@southamptonsheroes Any particular reason for that slur or is it just because you felt like it, and may I say I actually do not have an intelectual disability which is usually what people consider 'mental retardation' just so you know. lol.
Sure, it can save our time instead of waiting to be served in a long queue. There are of course disadvantages of self service checkouts and I can find some on tWikipedia (there's reference attached to it too):
@mjay22 This is an old vid, I'm glad you found it, it's a good topic, I got flamed for this post back in the day. I think evidience is mounting for the job loss assosciated with self serve checkouts, at most of my local supermarkets the expresslanes have been reduced to just 2 cashiers and the rest is replaced by self serves.
@kenbinney Interesting point, but its usually kids that work on the checkouts and they dont have the training to work at the technology manufacturer's factory, then again training the youth workforce could be a very good idea. I like you're line of thinking.
Self serve checkouts are actually heaps easy to use. There is always a self service attendant next to the self serve checkouts therefore no one will lose their jobs.
I work as a self serve attendant at woolworths, it has cut the lines at checkouts, and people love using it once they have learnt how to.
You should do more research on things before posting this crap.
So while your standing there supervising, what happened to the other people that six self serve checkouts replaced. One Attendant to a half dozen checkouts......and no one lost their jobs lol
we have some self check outs in Ireland but because there is tax on plastic bags there is always a cashier at them to sell the bags there is also a security gaurd, talk about self defeating
Hi I work at a Woolworths that has the self serve system I have heard these concerns over and over again. Staff levels have probably been reduced although only slightly but it has taken so much pressure off queues giving those customers who don't want to wait the option to go through self serve. They normally only see through people that have a basket so express staff have been reduced but we still need trolley capable registers so for this reason there are still plenty of register staff.
Thanks for the comment, at my local woolies after 8pm all the express checkouts are shut down and only the self serve ones remain along with the larger trolley checkouts. I think it's a pity people are too impatient to wait in a queue at woolies these days, so impatient they want to use a machine over a person, it truly is a funny old world.
I've actually used the self check out at walmart maybe twice since I first remember seeing them there about 4 years ago if my memory is correct. Usually I'd rather wait in a short line plus there is the need for another pack of smokes but mainly I don't care for them myself either.
LOVE THE SELF SERVICE CHECK OUTS!!! Big W rocks, always use it there. So cool, straight through and out of there! I am not going shopping to socialise, I go to get items that I need, so it suits me fine! :-)
My walmart had 4, but it was changed to a new location and the self-checkouts were not brought to the new store, walmart is a place where I am pro self-checkout.
It's also dumb how the people need to come and press buttons so you can buy paint cans, ug.
The voice is really loud too it freaks me out, and people look at you when you press the "Spanish" button so the voice is in Spanish, they judge you for not choosing English, it's weird.
We had to study this in commerce about 5 weeks ago and we addressed the same issues as you did. You've got a point, it may be quicker and more convenient, but it takes away the social side of things, and if the stupid machine breaks down you have to go and find someone to help you anyway. Along with the fact that people loose jobs. I was going to go apply for a job at best and Lest, but i might re-think that. I just don't want to work at a fast food place.
I have one store that has a ten or less.. and there are about 4 of them, I only go there when in a hurry. I resent the fact that my grocery prices aren't lower for the "privilege". I asked a lady there about job loss... she said that they still need someone in charge for that area. anyway I do major shopping elsewhere as their prices are up.
the only reason self is faster is because 9 times out of 10, only 5 cash registers are open out of a thousand...okay maybe that's an exaggeration, but at the Wally World werhe I live they have like 15-20 cash registers including the self check outs..and of the regular ones, they only keep like 3 open...it's so dumb.
I like self service checkouts. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and its quicker if ive only got three items or something. However, I dont like the fact that they take away jobs I never really thought about it, you never do as a consumer you just think "oh a way to make my life easier". And I agree about taking the personal feeling out of getting service it makes it more fun especially in restaurants. But self service check outs are fun I'm sorry, but having them in cinemas and restuarants is a bit far

Be comforted by the fact that, if and when a job is lost in a store, a new job in the technology manufacturer's factory or office opens up.

Good topic!
I like self service because I have social anxiety - some days, I would rather not have to talk to a stranger ;)

technology will never evolve downwardly. people will have to, as they always have, evolve with it.

YOU DO NOT LOSE YOUR JOB!
Hello its called a self check out cashier!
self check outs allow us to have more check outs open for our customers when our big wigs only lets us have so many chasiers!
So grrrrr!

I work at a supermarket and there's 3 self service checkouts. I use it sometimes but I feel better when a check out clerk helps me out.
