  • Eddie and Alex playing together. an absolute awsome family: THE VAN HALENS!

  • Alex Van Halen = pretty damn underrated drummer! That guys an animal! \m/

  • Always loved how they'd segued into "Girl Gone Bad" and then morphed into Cream's "I'm So Glad".

  • Love these guys was lucky enough to see them in winnipeg in 79 and 80 greatest concerts i ever saw and ive been to alot

  • girl gone bad wasnt even released yet.such a great song

  • My days loved it!

  • This show is so fucking classic it's ridiculous. I'd give anything to go back and be at this there. Sure I'd more than likely add one more name to the overdose or death list but who gives a shit.

  • a song that starts with an outro, brilliant!

  • mike is way out of tune

  • Kinda wish I were born in '70 that way I coulda been around this but I was born 26 years too late

  • I think this show was the beginning of the end for this era. This is the last show they did before recording "1984" n Dave did a shitty job n didn't take it seriously, plus the way he acted in the back. Ed made comments about the show n Dave's performance. The whole 1984 tour they didn't get along n spent most of the show doing solo spots n Dave did the same routine not singing right. Ed wanted to present the music more professionally, if thats the right word, n write deeper music.

  • @theShowStopper321 youre absolutely right..this was also the end of hard rock as we knew it. glam metal was just around the corner...bands like the scorpions, ozzy, priest, etc...all got caught up in the nonsense. i was at this show, 13 years old with my 2 older brothers. we had to leave around midnite cuz van halen took forever to finally take the stage, and roth would just start rambling between songs...long day, hungry, tired...i'll never forget it. only 20 bucks for all those great bands!!

  • HOLY SHIT I DIDNT KNOW ALEX IS THAT GREAT!!

  • OH MAN!!

I wish I was born in time to see VH at this stage, it seems like they hit a level at this point that they never reached again.

I love these vids - can't get enough of them when they were in their 'prime'.

They must have RULED the world of Rock back then!!

  • The way alex and eddie are playing is a perfect example of the most productive uses of cocaine.

  • @HanoverFiste3 Haell Yes!

  • WOW!!!!!

  • Dave was always more concerened with 'look at me, look at me' than he was singing the song.

  • Even way back when, it was all Ed and Alex... Mike was totally out of the picture... (literally)

  • The Girl Gone Bad / I'm So Glad medley in the middle is fuckin head-explodingly good. Worth every cent of the $17000 per minute they got for the gig. What a show. Legends.

  • Wow...this included Drop Dead Legs and I'm So Glad by Cream. These guys were so tight, despite Dave.

  • fark yeah...come back to OZ one last Time!!!! & I mean Australia ....LOZA

  • This is when Eddie looked ZACKLY like Valerie.

  • This is bringing back memories. This was was the best concert of my life !

  • PHENOMINAL PERFORMANCE by rock legends at the top of their game!! This really showcases the unbreakable musical bond Eddie has with his brother Alex on drums....Thanks so much for this video!!

  • :36, Amazing. I been tryin 2 learn how to do that. (: lol

  • you gotta love the brotherly duel going on in this one!!

  • Best of all is they got 15,000 a minute for this show,,.Must have been nice

  • dave is about 3 second late on every line, and off pitch, and doesn't remember the F$%King words. no wonder eddie was pissed at him.

  • @roccotanto one of the main reasons eddie got pissed on dave to...

  • a brilliant band , unbelievably unique,

  • ang girl gone bad was borned (1:55)

  • That riff defines the Van Halen sound to me.

  • Comment removed

  • This also one of the last times they tuned down for a show

  • two brothers..........really special..........what a fuckin band!

  • =VH= at their drunken worst, yet this show beats any other show!

  • huge vh fan maybe the biggest but still gotta say Dave was never a singer just an entertainer. Always felt robbed after leaving those shows because of Daves who cares about singing these great songs as long as i look good shaking my ass attitude

  • @vanspringer What must've been even more annoying was knowing that he could sing when he put his mind to it. Looking back at these YooChoob vids and seeing him dick about too much is bad enough, but paying money to hear the tunes and for Dave to mess up would be pretty galling. Although, the band were usually as tight as an emo douche's jeans, so that's something.

  • Ya know why eddie is so good? He has an equally epic twin. ( 3:57 )

  • O SNAP! Did They sneak in Girl Gone Bad before its release on 1984 album.

  • This is what every modern day rock band should aspire to be - desperate men in search of a desperate fortune!!!

  • Supposedly this was one of the final gigs for that guitar... the original "Frankenstein". The neck pocket was cracked and it wouldn't stay in tune. R.I.P....

  • @DarthKazi Eddie still uses the guitar . . . he got a new neck, and shimmed it with a pick to solve that . . . i make relic versions of his guitar (i think i've done 3 or 4) and i cracked all of them; they all work fine too with the pick under there

  • @Chillybeef123 Yeah but it was retired shortly before the recording of 1984 because it wouldn't stay in tune anymore and Kramer was making new guitars for him. He recorded 1984 with a Pacer prototype. He might still plunk around on it, but don't expect it to make it's way onto record again. He's pretty much set with using the Wolfgang anyway.

  • @DarthKazi I found a vid of him using it in the last tour, and it sounds fine to me . . . type in Van Halen Unreleased & RARE "Jump", and its the first vid . . . and just so you know, i mean no disrepect; i was just almost positive he still used it often . . . maybe thats the replica actually, who knows . . . ah well, its not like anyone can tell haha

  • @Chillybeef123 It's the replica.

  • Nice tribute to Cream w/ "I'm so glad!" Awesome!

  • Man... Dave messed up the lyrics in just about every song at this festival. with that said he's still my favorite all time singer. Diamond Dave. and Eddie... he's the best.

  • @88mpny it nice to have someone else "confirm" how sloppy Roth was that night.....slurring, his words.....forgeting lyrics.....really he was more "flash and glitter" that night....than anything. I still had a great time.....and a great memory of all the great hard rock acts....that day.

  • @davidsocal77 That's what booze, marijuana, cocaine, and possibly quaaludes do to a performance that requires precision.

  • at 2:30 GIRRRRRRRRRRLLLLSS GONE BAAD JAM !!!! AWSOME!

  • i was there that day....and they were the "final act"....i love van halen. but, david lee roth was not....ready for this. at all....the thought was ...."he partied" too much before the show.....the band was great...... but, Roth ....."failed" that night.......bottom line. truth be told. just watch the other videos of this performance.....and u will agree. i hate to say this......i love the van halen boys.....eddie, has always.....had a ax to "grind with david lee roth".....and this didn't help..

  • @davidsocal77

This guy davidsocal77 is full of shit, all this clown does is run the mighty Halen down, STFU and get back to being a Journey fan douche bag

  • @davidsocal77 : Im cool with it, it's Van Halen,....it aint gonna be "perfect" outside the studio......that's what everyone loves about em- the "party" is on the stage, and they transmitted it out to the audience and back to the band. Van Halen was alittle like The Who in that they were a reflection of who the fans were -ordinary guys with extraordinary talents. Roth can totally screw it up, and still have the comedic smarts to still land on his feet -that takes skill

  • Dam he played "Girl Gone Bad" a year before the "1984". Genius.

  • how fucken awesome is Eddie??

  • At the peak!!!!

  • The VH boys got paid 1 million dollars for this one night stand in California. MTV played the whole festival. Gone were the days of under payed rock stars & cheap concerts. Who ever got to see them & the Crue at this show I'm so jealous.

  • Now I can die in peace after hearing this. The only thing God and the Devil could agree on is that Van Halen ROCKS!

  • How great are the back-up vocals! New bands...watch & learn!

  • too hip... and a very loud whoo-ya to ya for this video, too cool for words

  • Man, these guys could've done a cover of Old MacDonald or the 12 days of Christmas and it would've KICKED ASS!!!!

  • thumbs up rock on van halen

  • Unfucking real!!! goin' into girl gone bad and I'm so glad still gives me fuckin' goose bumps!!! Oh my god I'm cummin!!!

  • Just found this. Priceless.

  • In 1983, Van Halen was THEE biggest rock band on the planet...

    Not too shabby.

  • i think this was the last show he played the frankenstein guitar . until the 2004 tour. correct me if i am wrong.

  • @kelly1973 OU812 was the last.

  • Fun to hear the preview of "Girl Gone Bad" in there....

  • this is sooooo f'n good that unfortunately the so-called normal dipshits that we live with from day to day just don't get it, period!!!! tooooo bayad......don't care!!!!

  • FUCKING AMAZING STAGE PRESENCE!! This video reallky showcases the unbreakable bond Eddie has with his brother Alex....I love how he changes up his drumming with the guitar. Every part of Van Halen is essential. Together, they were a force to be reckoned with that exploded onto the stage, melted your speakers, and held the audience spellbound....

  • I really think that VH's US festival gig was their best of all

  • @xItalianOxBoYx

Not sure if it's their absolute "best", but, it's by far their most legendary and my favourite as well.

  • they over a 1.5 million for this one gig, and they're all totally buzzed, all over the place.....hahahahaha

  • It it balls or genius to do a freestyle on-stage jam on the biggest show of your career thus far?!

  • in their case, genius. in the rest of our cases, balls.

  • not nessesaraly freestyle - eddie wanted to get some solo time in, also he was pretty high on Girl gone bad (the instrumental he breaks into) it sounds planned, but great!!! :-)

  • SoooooOooOoOOooOOodrunk

  • We could play "name that neck" on Frankie. Somewhere I read that instead of getting a fret job every 10 shows or so (since he beats them up so bad), he'd just get a new neck.

BTW... love the ode to Girl Gone Bad!!!!

  • the brothers know how to push the accents in songs...both know the drums

  • LMAO ... so listen carefully my friends, that little break in the middle there, where eddie runns/trots to front stage-thats girls gone bad from 1984 ... he uses that riff as a break/bridge. kinda funny how on van halen 2 he takes ideas and writes new songs later .... lol eddie rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • congrats! That was front page news about 25 years ago...

  • 6:55 is very sneaky!!

  • Is this concert on DVD format (region 4 = Australia)..

  • Hey All,

Musical Ideas can germinate for years. VH expanded on songs frequently during shows with mini-jam sessions. In 1981 VH did a similar version of SGMAD with a women in love interlude that seque wayed into a few riffs from Pleasure Dome before returining to SGMAD. I have an 82' bootleg tape of a Montreal Show with the intro to Panama. This US Fesivtal show was Memorial Day 83. After this the 1984 recording sessions started. Prior to this show DLR was lost in the Amazon. serious

  • why does this video and most others SUCK in picture quality and then there's Pretty Woman that is flawless?

  • I think they got the song, "Girl Gone Bad" from Cream's, "I'm so Glad". When they break into, "Girl gone bad" Dave starts in on "Im so Glad", either way, they are masters at jamming. I love it when Ed and Alex go at it. I hope they go back on tour, I missed them in '07. They are jamming in this song. US FEST '83, Van Halen in one of the best show I've ever seen. Thanks for posting.

  • Not the brownest Eddie tone!

  • @lidesnowi i agree, it sounds a bit thin on the recording, but i bet live it sounded thick as soup and 10x more awesome

  • 3:30 EARLY VERSION OF GIRL GONE BAD

  • A little taste of things to come...

  • In this song at 2:30 sound like girls gone bad riff and drum beat.

  • Its is, exactly.

  • Van halen kick ass with david lee roth all them kicks dave does, That is so sweet iwish i could do all them moves i can do pretty high around house kick & I have made the outfits dave eddie have on & i got the camo ones to.

  • 1984 was released december 31 1983

  • i have this whole concert on a bootleg DVD

    it is a kickass concert

Van Halen is one of the greatest if not the greatest bands of all time!!!

  • Did they one night or more?

  • Van halen = one of the most important bands in music history!

  • @stratdem yea, and VH1 left them out of the 7 stages of rock special, not even mentioning them. Van Halen and Eddie molded what the 80s would become. His guitar playing and the musical style of the band. Its cus Eddie always stiffs them and won't allow them to do any specials on the group.

  • @stratdem I'm doing my Master's Thesis on Edward Van Halen's influence and innovations.

  • i saw there 1978 and 1979 world toures and i'm still recovering!

  • @stratdem Damn don't rub that in for peeps like me who missed out cuz we were barely born in 79! I'm so jealous....!

  • Ed was FIRE that night!

  • why cant ed and al do this today?

  • It's called "age",but I guess they could do it,it's just a matter of if they wanted to.Who knows maybe next tour,Ed should be 100% then.

  • I love the preview Ed and Al give her for Girl Gone bad...holy freakin crap they were awesome!

  • is that the song that he starts to play by tapping on the fretboard at 3:39 or is that something else. if so, what song!?

  • the first tapping part he does at the start of 3:39 to 3:44 sounds just like the intro from Women In Love

but the rest is just Eddie jamming out and messing around on his guitar

  • Gimme a drink. LOL

  • For some reason i was thinking the US festival was in 82, didn't pay attention to the title of the vid.

  • there was an US fes in 82 as well probobly where the confusion came from

  • Dave started to get kicked out here and you can tell why! He stopped sounding decent and acted as if he didn't care.

  • and it's Girl Gone Bad at 2:25 mozeyx

  • Thats bad ass!!

  • Wow, they started playing House of Pain around 2:25. Two years before 1984 came out.

  • Shit, Girl gone Bad, not House of Pain

  • 1 year homie

  • mozeyx, House of Pain was an old tune they had before the recorded VH I, it just didnt make the cut for the first record

  • Wow... It says 1983 in the title of the album is 1984... I could understand if it wasn't called 1984, but God.

  • this show was from 83, in fact it was the only show VH did that year. It was after the Diver Down tour and before 1984.

  • Actually, this show is considered the Diver Down tour. The Diver Down Tour (Hide Your Sheep Tour, actually) went into May of '83.

  • Comment removed

  • I thought 1984 was released in 1983??

  • where did you hear that?

P.S. then it would be called 1983...

  • well my album sleeve says 1983 on it on the copyright part. It was recorded in '83 and released early january 84. It is very likely that girl gone bad was written and possibly been demo'd in 5150 by the time of this concert.

  • yeah but some of the 1984 songs were in van halen zero. not girl gone bad. house of pain was on it.

  • it was released on new years day of 1983-1984

  • nope. january 9th 1984

  • i read somewhere that it was released at the stroke of midnight on new years day 1984. Don't know if it's true or not.

  • As I recall the new album 1984 was announced around the latter part of 1983 but wasn't released until early in 1984. Obviously, all the pre-production, mixing, mastering, cover art, what have you would have to been done in 1983 in preparation for it's release in early 1984.

  • it was released new year's eve 83

  • January 9, 1984

  • @azazael07

LOL! Just the disputed release date of 1984 alone is more proof-positive of the sheer genius of the Roth era. Merely adds to the legend.

  • ahh good old days!!!

  • Little bit of Women In Love at 3:39

  • That thing eddie does at 0.31, does anyone know what it's called?

  • its like a harmonic, but while your fingers is hitting the frets your other hand slides up just barely touching the strings...its a lot of fun to do!

  • harmonic slide

do pull offs in his case second and fourth frets on g pull off whgile slidding picking hand lightly touching strings to sound the harmonics use the side of your pinky it sounds clear with it.

  • Ed and Alex are the reasons why many kids picked up the guitar and drums. This video certainly shows why.

  • great solo

  • This is why HE'S STILL THE BEST!!!!!

  • Watching these old videos makes me want to sue for my money back after paying a hundred bucks for that weak ass reunion '08 tour.

  • you should VERY glad you have seen the '08 tour and not this concert as they are MUCH better now!!!!

Back then Roth was completely unable to sing,he was too busy jumping on the stage, nowadays he can't jump anymore so he can sing a little better

  • Dave could never sing, not today or yesterday. Eddie was definitely doing better back then, dude. I don't know what you're talking about...

  • They weren't very good in '08, except for the Philly concert, which I have a copy of. In '09, I saw them in Atlantic City and they were doing great.

  • Does anybody hear diary of a madman? 2:17 thru 2:28 the beginning of the song.

  • barley but kinda

  • You should search youtube for Eddie Van Halen 1982 Guitar World interview. He says he likes Randy Rhoads, but thinks Randy ripped him off, meaning his style I guess ... So maybe?

  • I like Randy Rhoads, but I think Ed's right

  • Eddie did influence a lot of people.

  • self taught guitar.....infucking credible!!! Some people were just born to play...and be the best....Eddie!!!

  • YOU GOT THAT RIGHT BROTHER!

  • this is the holy grail of van halen right here

  • Holy shit what a set! Best live band on earth!

  • AMAZING guitar tone!

  • HOLY SHIT!!!! "Girl Gone Bad" PRE-RELEASE!!!!

MY FAVORITE VAN HALEN TRACK EVER!!

  • THIS is the kind of rock & roll that separates the men from the mice. Good set.

  • THAT WAS KICK ASS!

  • dude imagine being there and hearing stuff that hadnt come out yet! blows my mind. they even had that one section that they havent used yet at 6:00 to 7:25 :o

  • @CRIZ0000 In reference to the statement of a section they haven't used yet (6:00 to 7:25) I gave it a listen and I heard something interesting. The part from 6:09 -6:24 sounds like the ending of Mercyful Fate's 'Burning the Cross'. Anybody agree?

  • Wonder how much of the music from 1984 was written at this time, May of 83? House of Pain was written back in the late 70s I think.

  • yeah it was it was on a demo. they have it up here on youtube.

  • this is good shit man! i love the transitions between material and how tight they are!

  • throwing in girl gone bad b4 1984 is released, mmmm!

  • i bet dave went and screw some chick backstage...lol

  • bottommmmmmmmmmmmmmss UP

  • Notice Ed has his back turned and faces his bro Al on alot of his licks cuz he by habit didn't want any future Eddies copying his licks!Trust me it's by design.

  • Eddie is the best rock&roll guitar player ever. vh was really good then.

  • Eddie's great, but I wouldn't put him ahead of Hendrix.

  • where hendrix left off eddie picked up

  • I'd say that's fair and true !

  • and then they throw in "i'm So Glad" by Cream....

  • Yeah I mentioned that earlier dude.

  • wait, this is 1983 and girl gone bad was on the 1984 album...

  • Yeah, Girl Gone Bad was already in production

  • in production in a very long time!

girl gone bad was like a practice when Eddie and Alex were playing together

  • EDDIE`S JUST MAGIC.
