1200 police officers with virtually unlimited rein over a city's downtown core couldn't keep 100 Black block members with sticks and stones from marching 22 blocks into the free speech zone... as a consequence they had to arrest everyone. These police officers don't even realize that they are actually contributing to their own future enslavement. It's a classic case of using the "Sheep" to round up the other "Sheep". @wtfisthatsmell The issue is that, once you do that then you've handed them the excuse they need...these guys all have guns, if a big crowd charged some officers it would very quickly escalate from some physical force and some pepper spray to a line of SWAT officers pumping people full of automatic gunfire. Then anyone left would be arrested for all the charges they would have been anyway, with a bunch of felony assault/attempt murder charges added on for good measure.

Very good doc., but some parts become completely blanked out, replaced with only green colour. I downloaded the video clip to be able to view it in a player separate from the Web browser to be able to expand the size of the viewing area to my liking, but I doubt that this is the cause of some parts of the video becoming replaced with only green colour. I do not oppose the use of violence when absolutely necessary, as in the case of spontaneous self-defense, but I do not believe it is an effective instrument of social change, if the desired end result is peace.
Just to clarify, the quote does state that the good "sets out to destroy" a particular evil. In the case of your rape analogy, this does not fit with the quotation, as the woman is acting in spontaneous self-defense. If however, she were to "set out to destroy" rapists, and used any means necessary to do so - perhaps through capital punishment, or emasculation - then I would no longer be able to sympathize with her plight.
I just really despise pacifists that do everything they can to view violence as something out of this world that never solves or changes anything, when that's far from true.

Around the 50:00 minute mark when the older man with one leg is telling his story, I had to stop the video and take a break from watching before continuing. I felt so sick to my stomach at hearing of someone having their rights taken away like that.

I was living in Parkdale when this occurred. Someone explain to me WHY 500 riot police pulled into a neighbourhood full of mentally & physically disabled people & pensioners [they make up 50% of the population]--and turned it into an armed invasion of 4 blocks stopping residents from shopping/going home etc....terrifying us. People came streaming out of their houses.

1200 police officers with virtually unlimited rein over a city's downtown core couldn't keep 100 Black block members with sticks and stones from marching 22 blocks into the free speech zone... as a consequence they had to arrest everyone. Sounds like a public inquiry is needed... and We should hold our government (currently Stephen Harper) responsible for these events until he calls one.

@wtfisthatsmell The issue is that, once you do that then you've handed them the excuse they need...these guys all have guns, if a big crowd charged some officers it would very quickly escalate from some physical force and some pepper spray to a line of SWAT officers pumping people full of automatic gunfire. Then anyone left would be arrested for all the charges they would have been anyway, with a bunch of felony assault/attempt murder charges added on for good measure.

Very good doc., but some parts become completely blanked out, replaced with only green colour. I downloaded the video clip to be able to view it in a player separate from the Web browser to be able to expand the size of the viewing area to my liking, but I doubt that this is the cause of some parts of the video becoming replaced with only green colour. The first time it happened, I moved the slider forward a little and got real image again, so repeated this each time the image disappeared.

The means shape the end. If you wish to inspire a social change, violence certainly allows you to do so quickly, but this haste comes at the cost of a violent end. A peaceful society cannot possibly be shaped with bombs and bloodshed.
I do not oppose the use of violence when absolutely necessary, as in the case of spontaneous self-defense, but I do not believe it is an effective instrument of social change, if the desired end result is peace.

Just to clarify, the quote does state that the good "sets out to destroy" a particular evil. In the case of your rape analogy, this does not fit with the quotation, as the woman is acting in spontaneous self-defense. If however, she were to "set out to destroy" rapists, and used any means necessary to do so - perhaps through capital punishment, or emasculation - then I would no longer be able to sympathize with her plight.

I wonder what would have happened if all the protesters wore riot gear, had rubber bullets, pepper spray, batons, shields/protective clothing and "we are the law, do as we say" attitudes ? theres more of us than them...we will not forget, we will not forgive. I was living in Parkdale when this occurred. Someone explain to me WHY 500 riot police pulled into a neighbourhood full of mentally & physically disabled people & pensioners [they make up 50% of the population]--and turned it into an armed invasion of 4 blocks stopping residents from shopping/going home etc....terrifying us. People came streaming out of their houses.
Children were crying on the streets in terror at the wall of black. Think any of them will grow up with respect for police?
