@iamcharming2008 yeah i'll admit you don't sound like you know what you're talking about. for one the image is pretty good and so is the colour, its no d-slr, but still a great cheap camcorder with a mic input and a manual focus dial (though not very practical because it is too small) but the point is that in order to make a film you shouldn't solely rely on image quality but on shot composition and good direction.
Wow, that little flick looked great. I just scored an HV-20 on CL for $250. I am used to recording my interviews for my show directly into my computer with a Logitech webcam Pro 9000, which has its own software. With the Logitech I just plug in the usb and go. With this new camera from Canon I am going to have to learn how to use this new device, but clearly the results are well worth it.
@BiltmoreEtc I'm not sure if your interviews need to be streamed live with a webcam? You can hook the cam up to your computer and fire up Adobe Premiere and go to record mode and Premiere should see what the camera is seeing and you can record digitally to the comp with Premiere instead of capturing to tape first and then transferring.
hey, great video....what program did you use to import and edit your Hv20 footage? I have the iVIS HV20 and everytime I try and import using Premiere Pro CS4 or Final Cut Pro, my camera is not recognized....
thanks for the reply, it came a little late though :P I managed to fix my problem by resetting the camera to factory settings. Turned out I had HDV output disabled, which was why Premiere Pro CS4 couldn't recognize it.
This is really good video it looks very clear, but i have one question is the Canon VIXIA HV20 the same as the canon hv20. I was thinking of getting an canon hv20 because its one of the best camcorders i saw for my budget.
@Untouchable909090 I don't know that they make the HV20 anymore, it's not the Vixia something er other if they do make it. I think you can find used HV20's on ebay. Not sure what they're going for used but it does take a nice picture.
So the camera works good in darker light/conditions?
I tried a hd camera which were good in daylight but indoors in the evening it was like a cell phone cam, so i dont know which camera to buy, your look good though. Got any film in dark?
@76681@42LightYears check out my sandhillstudios channel. Pretty much everything there was shot with the HV20. Compared to my old 3CCD Canon GL2's it smokes them.

Hello, i am considering getting this camera but im not sure if I will be able to edit the videos. My computer is a Compaq Presario and it has a NVIDIA video card. Do you know if i will be able to edit the HD videos Properly or do I Have to get a better Computer?
@alfredonski HD footage can be pretty processor hungry to edit. I have a dual core 1.6 ghz processor with 2gb of ram and it's fairly choppy when I edit unless I put the video in draft mode while I'm editing. I would look at your computer specs and if it isn't at least as fast as my computer I would consider upgrading. That pretty much goes for all HD editing.
@warkilla thanks for the help. one more quick question. Do you know whats the highest frame rate you can set the camera at? To get those cool Slowmo shots.
@alfredonski Well, there's the option to shoot in 60i I think and you can perform what's called a 2:3 pull down to achieve 60fps look which allows you to slow your footage down 50% and it still looks really smooth. Search the web for HV20 2:3 pull down and you can probably find some tutorials.
the picture quality is better than the vx2000 cause no MiniDV, but i dont think the colours are better.. but you can correct them for example with adobe after effects
im pretty sure this is mini dv. unless you were talking about the vx2k i dont know anyone with that or anything about it, the hv20 isnt 3CCD though, its some other scanning system.
I own a VX2100 and two HV20s. The VX2100 is SD only. It captures well in low light, unlike the HV20, but the HD picture quality of the HV20 is much better. I bought the VX2100 as a third camera, but am regretting it now. I should have just bought another Canon.
This is an HV20, it's only uploaded in standard def, in HD it looks great. I'm not even using a fish eye, and I'm glad your "friend's" footage is better.
The one nice thing is you'll always have a bckup of your video. Tapes are really inexpensive. Redundant Hard Drive Arrays or Blu Ray Disks are still kind of spendy for storing large amounts of data.
The Xh-a1 is wonderfully amazing, it is way better than the HV30, but the image quality is only slightly different, if your just going for good image quality or film look than get the HV30, if you are looking for pro features AND good image quality and film look than the XH-A1 is for you. Or you could get an Hv30 and than pimp your rig to make it more pro.
the HV20 has 1 CMOS while the XH-A1 has 3 CCD. These are different and 3CCD is supposed to be better than 1 CMOS from what I hear, however I didn't find this to be true when comparing the HV20 to the GL2. I had a canon GL2 before getting my HV20 and despite having 1 CMOS sensor it out performed the GLD in low light and overall picture quality. Don't be fooled by what you read all the time, do a comparison, I am SOOO glad I switched to the HV20 over my old 3CCD Canon GL2.
No offense but the GL1 is a 10 + year old technology. I have a Canon XH-A1, XH-G1, Sony HVR Z-7U, HVR Z-1U and Canon HV-20. I did the comparing myself. I didn't went for what I heard. As for low light, the HV-20 looks like shit, grainy and dull. That camera is rated as 100 LUX ! At least so Canon recommends, just like the Canon XL-2 (100 LUX) for clean video. 3 chips, be it CMOS or CCDs will give you a truer color reproduction. It's as simple as that.
I was referring to the GL2 if that makes any difference. I'm not sure about the XH-A1 or any other 3CCD camcorders but in a comparison between the GL2 and the HV20, one a 3CCD and the other a single CMOS it was no comparison. The HV20 blew it out of the water.
HV20 is a consumer camera. I only use it to capture video. It's a good little cam but not a camera for what I do and to the professional "eye" there is a huge difference between 1 chip and 3 chips. Additionally, larger chip cameras provide a nicer, shallower depth of field that mini DV cameras can't deliver, even the pro HDV / mini DV cameras such as the Sony HVR-Z7U.
I agree with REEZproductions, all of the Canon HD camcorders have phenomenal picture quality compared to more expensive cameras. What you're goign to be buying with a more expensive camera is possible a larger amount of professional features. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.
I have this camcorder. It's fantastic for what I paid for it but it seems to have trouble in lowlight situations. Would I get better footage by shooting in SD or shooting in HD and converting to SD?
I'm sure you can find a good deal on it on ebay, amazon, or google if you shop around. It's been out for a while so I'm sure the price has come down quite a bit since I purchased it.
I have no experience with the HV30. I can tell you that the HV20 is an amazing camera, espeically for the time when I bought it. I have shown the footage to people using HD camera's costing thousands more than the HV20 and they were blown away. I've used it's footage in some major projects and all my clients have loved the footage that it's taken.
No, you can switch the camera into SD mode and shoot standard def. video in 4:3 aspect ratio. If you're shooting in High Definition mode, it's always going to be 16:9. The SD 4:3 setting is nice because some of my older video projects are in SD so if I ever shoot additional footage to add to the project I can swith to SD.
That is a very subjective question. I really don't know how to answer that. I think the clarity of the video from the HV20 is as good as other HD camcorders that cost thousands more. If you really want to see the quality of the video this camera can put out, go to the website vimeo and do a search for Canon HV20, there are alot of sample videos there.
can i know what rendering options did you use for this video (or for youtube)? and also for relatively good viewing quality in your computer? i cant seem to get the quality like yours in youtube. thanks man.
All I did was render it using adobe media encoder and encode it as a .wmv at about 1000mb/s bitrate. I think at that bitrate, it looks fairly good on your computer and a 10 minute video comes in under 100mb.
I also want to know.. There many videos of the HV20 on youtube.. and they all look diffrent.. Quality wise.. I own an Indie production company.. Now does the RAW footage in CINEMODE actually look as good as this does?
I did shoot this video. I shot it the first day I got the camera to take some footage home and play with it. I was blown away. I sold my Canon GL2 3CCD camcorders because they can't touch this camera. Cine mode does give video a nice soft look, however for action shots you might want to take it out of cine mode. But I leave my camera in Cine mode 99% of the time.
quality is just terrible after all that converting, and all that. so help me out plz lol. your vid was great, my footage cant even compare. so basically im just asking is my system good enough to use this camera or do i need to upgrade lol.
I would def think about upgrading your computer. I have an Intel Duel Core processor with 2GB or ram and in Premier, even in draft mode, the video can be a little laggy. You'll also need a firewire port as well. Good luck :)
ok i will definitely consider that...im just an amateur filmaker, teenager...so i gotta save up lol. but since this is a hi def cam. is it as simple as take the footage, USB it to pro and edit it? lol or should i say firewire it to pro lol. but all the hardware i need to actually edit the vid is a firewire port and a firewire?? nothing outta the ordinary?
Essentially yes. If you have hardware that can handle editing the large HD video files, all you'll need is a good non linear editor like premier, final cut pro, etc. etc. and capture the video to your computer and then edit that video. HD video requires alot more processing power than SD video so if you don't have a fast computer, I would def. suggest getting that first :)
thanks man...that definitely helps...i just saw this handheld camera...and saw the footage and i was like...no way...for that much?? haha. well i got 20 bucks...gotta get a good comp. and the cam now. but luckily my b day is coming up. did you use a mac er PC? cuz i have the cs3 version of pro for PC. and everybodys tellin me to get a mac if ur gonna edit vids. is there absolutely anyway i could just flashdrive all the files for pro like the setup and whatnot and put em to mac? cuz its not that
i dont wanna use final cut. but it just took me sooooooooooo long to know how to use pro. i dont wanna convert...and lets face it. i dont got the cash for FCP!! haha. even with some minor adjustments...i heard there is a way u can use PC programs on macs...might you know how?? as you can tell, im pretty new to all this stuff haha.
YOu deleted my post. Really proffesional! YOu think that everybody is supposed to love all of your videos. I also like the hv20 otherwise I would not have come to your account. Well, have fun with your life. This looks like a jail to me. No freedom of expression. Take care.
I'm sorry if your limited appreciation for music ruined your viewing experience. Being that out of almost 50 thousand people, you're the only one to dislike the music, so I'm glad I didn't listen to you when I put this piece together. As for the quality of the footage, I hope you buy a $10k camera that makes you feel happy. I'll stick with my HV20 that didn't break the bank and will still produce as good of footage as any camera you might be able to afford :)
very nice clips. I have a Canon Hv20 also but I notice when I'm filming sometimes, especially something in motion (like a person walking), the motion looks blurry or rather, choppy. Is there anything I can do about that?
Have you tried adjusting what mode you're in? There's a Cine mode, and I think it's a little more blurry than say normal mode. Play around with the different modes available on the camera.
Love this clip. Very nice camera as you show here. I'm not sure I understand what you say about the 24p. the 24p video stream is embedded in 60i. "In order to get the 24p video you need to perform a 2:3 pull down to extract the 24p video from the 60i stream."
Is there a way of explaining in layman terms?
From what I read it is not that easy to get your 24p?
i just bought an HV20, and i checked up on the HV30 before buying... there are actually less features on the HV30 than the HV20, dont ask me why but its true... the major diff is that the HV30 is slightly smaller and has a longer bat life. get the HV20, its beautiful!
Better 'check up on it' a little bit better next time. They are the same size, and the HV30 offers an additional recording mode (30p recording on NTSC model), an improved LCD display screen, and the zoom toggle has been slightly improved. "Less features on the HV20" is false, even if you're talking about the PAL model.
I was planning to get the HV20 and then I saw the HVX200. I dont know if you have any experience with the HVX200 but is it really that big of a difference ( disregarding the P2 media).
Sorry, i'm not familiar with that camera. All I know is at the time of purchasing this camera it was the cheapest/best quality camera on the market. I've had it for a year or two now and have loved it! It shoots really great video. I'm sure any of Canon's HD prosumer camcorders would work great!
everytime i turn my project into a movie, the file ends up like.. 1.4 GB and i cant upload it to youtube, why is it that huge, even when it's rendered?
You need to choose what compression format you want to use. You can export as a .avi using various video codecs, divx, xvid, etc. etc. Or you can chose to export using adobe media encoder which will let you encode in .mpg or .wmv and you can chose the output size of the final file. Just make sure your video is no longer than 10 min and change your settings to the final output of the file is less than 100mb and you should be good to go :)
When you render it, make sure to choose the appropriate video codec. Right now you're probably rendering it uncompressed. Try exporting the video using the adobe media encoder which comes with premier and save it as a .wmv video file and change the bitrate to 1000kb/s and keep the video at 10 min long. The resulting file should be under 100mb.
I usually use Maxell's I believe. They're super cheap from Wallmart and I used them in my canon GL2's for years without any issues.
I think I may have been in Cine Mode, but i'm not positive.
I have not used the camera as a webcam. I think there's software out there that can use your MiniDV camcorder as a webcam though, but again I haven't tried that, I already have a webcam.
ive used my hv20 as a webcam to asnwer question 3, and yes it was via firewire.
you dont need any software or anything just plug it in and switch to DV mode (cant webcam in HDV) and the comp will act like there is a webcam present.
I heard of people making the 35mm DOF adapter them selves for a fraction of the price it would cost to buy the Letus 35mini. The video you posted, that guys says he made his? I need more info.
yeah just search around for DIY DOF adapters for Canon HV20 or Camcorders and you'll find quite a few links and threads. Some of them require a fair amount of technical know how and still cost a decent amount for the materials. I'll probably just save my money and buy one someday :) Maybe by then Canon will offer a model that can attach lenses from the factory :)
pulldown only applies to 24p video. if you use premiere pro though you never have to worry about it...it autodetects what you shot in, either 24p, 3op or 60i, and captures accordingly.
First question, did you enhanced the colors on this video with premiere pro? Second, did you do on purpose or is it that the stability is not so good, it keeps shaking when you move a little.
I did saturate the colors slightly in premier. As for the shakiness, it's probably just me. That was literally the first thing I shot when I bought this camera. This was just some test footage right when I pulled it out of the box so I was still learning how to use the camera. I didn't use a tripod or any sort of steading device, just shot it all from the hip :) Love the camera though!
You certainly could if you really wanted too. I performed a pull down on some test clips and I personally couldn't tell that much of a difference so I just leave my footage alone.
I didn't do anything special. I exported it as a .wmv out of adobe premier at a bit rate of about 1000kps.
Didn't do anything too special. I find that a 10 minute video at 1000kps winds up being about 80mb, it produces a decent video for local playback and a nice video on YouTube :) Hope you enjoy the camera, I love it so far!
if you output to .FLV @ ~200kbps in 320x240 mono sound youtube shouldn't have to convert it at all. this equals a better overall quality, smaller file size (like 1/10th of a high quality WMV) and the vid is available sooner as youtube doesn't have to re-render it
I'm not sure if you can record in 24p in regular DV mode.
To answer your other question, I've shot some stuff in regular DV mode with this camera to integrate new footage into an old project that was shot in 4:3 regular DV and it looked great.
Wow, that is incredible! I just got a HV20 and I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 and trying to fiddle with the settings to upload decent quality to youtube. What settings do you use? Do you upload .flv files? Any help would be appreciated greatly!
There is no "Best Software" for video editing, probably the two most popular are Adobe Premier and Final Cut Pro. I went to school and learned how to use the adobe suite and so thats what I stick with. They're both very similar and I think you'd be happy with either one you chose. The nice theing about the adobe suite is that all their apps work together so it makes post production very easy from design, editing and output to DVD. Check out the entire adobe creative suite.
Well, what you should do is plug your camera in, use hdvsplit just like you did before to capture your video. Go to the directory where the file that hdvsplit exported. It should have the file extension .mt2, simply rename the extension to .mpg or .mpeg and then try playing the file.
(Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.) This is the message I am getting after I change m2t to mpg or even mpeg on the Windows Media Player. Thank you for giving me advice-- I am completely lost.
I can't figure out how to play my videos on my computer. I bought firewire and installed it. I have read hundreds of ways to do it. I used hdvsplit, but i can't figure out what to do with it after that. I have windows xp and I need help.
if you used hdvsplit it most likely saved the files with a .m2t file extension. Just rename the file and change the .m2t to .mpg and you should be able to play the file using windows media player or any other player that supports mpg or mpeg playback. Let me know if that helped?
I edit in Adobe Premier. I didn't do anything to the stock settings on the camera when I shot this. I did do some color adjusting in post production but not much.
Well the main difference is that one uses tapes one uses hard drives. Storing large amounts of video without a blu-ray dvd burner or Terabytes of storage is difficult. That's why Tapes are still nice because they're cheap and you've got your raw film any time you need it. Plus the HG10 uses a compressed video format that a lot of video editing programs can't edit.
That's amazingly beautiful. I've been wanting to get a video camera like this one for a while now. How does your computer handle it? I've only got 512mb of ram and a 64mb video card. I think it's time for an upgrade. I just don't know how far I should upgrade....
i got some good macros with my hv20

The Xh-a1 is wonderfully amazing, it is way better than the HV30, but the image quality is only slightly different, if your just going for good image quality or film look than get the HV30, if you are looking for pro features AND good image quality and film look than the XH-A1 is for you. Or you could get an Hv30 and than pimp your rig to make it more pro.
REEZproductions 2 years ago
Don't forget that the HV 20 and 30 have only 1 CMOS chip whilie the XH-A1 has 3 CMOS chips. Each chip for each primari color.
formaset 2 years ago
the HV20 has 1 CMOS while the XH-A1 has 3 CCD. Don't be fooled by what you read all the time, do a comparison, I am SOOO glad I switched to the HV20 over my old 3CCD Canon GL2.
warkilla 2 years ago
No offense but the GL1 is a 10 + year old technology. I have a Canon XH-A1, XH-G1, Sony HVR Z-7U, HVR Z-1U and Canon HV-20. I did the comparing myself. I didn't went for what I heard. As for low light, the HV-20 looks like shit, grainy and dull. That camera is rated as 100 LUX ! At least so Canon recommends, just like the Canon XL-2 (100 LUX) for clean video. 3 chips, be it CMOS or CCDs will give you a truer color reproduction. It's as simple as that.
formaset 2 years ago
I was referring to the GL2 if that makes any difference. I'm not sure about the XH-A1 or any other 3CCD camcorders but in a comparison between the GL2 and the HV20, one a 3CCD and the other a single CMOS it was no comparison. The HV20 blew it out of the water.
warkilla 2 years ago
HV20 is a consumer camera. I only use it to capture video. It's a good little cam but not a camera for what I do and to the professional "eye" there is a huge difference between 1 chip and 3 chips. Additionally, larger chip cameras provide a nicer, shallower depth of field that mini DV cameras can't deliver, even the pro HDV / mini DV cameras such as the Sony HVR-Z7U.
formaset 2 years ago
I agree with REEZproductions, all of the Canon HD camcorders have phenomenal picture quality compared to more expensive cameras. What you're goign to be buying with a more expensive camera is possible a larger amount of professional features. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.
warkilla 2 years ago
I have this camcorder. It's fantastic for what I paid for it but it seems to have trouble in lowlight situations. Would I get better footage by shooting in SD or shooting in HD and converting to SD?
mrhipfl 3 years ago
Try shooting in Cine mode, it seems to help with grain in low light.
warkilla 3 years ago
I'll be sure to try that, Thanks!

ok thanks do you know how much the hv20 is?

I'm sure you can find a good deal on it on ebay, amazon, or google if you shop around. It's been out for a while so I'm sure the price has come down quite a bit since I purchased it.

is this camera better then the newer hv30?
zzddevilzz 3 years ago
I have no experience with the HV30. I can tell you that the HV20 is an amazing camera, espeically for the time when I bought it. I have shown the footage to people using HD camera's costing thousands more than the HV20 and they were blown away. I've used it's footage in some major projects and all my clients have loved the footage that it's taken.

hi
thnx for your info,i'm checking it and feel satisfied but it sold out here in thailand.
One question about the zoom,is it easy to do that?
Or maybe if it has very sharp image,i can do that in postpro like AE.

Canon HV20 Action film :)
KlasBenny 3 years ago
Is it always widescreen (16:9),and is it worth buying that camcorder?
please reply,
philippe
PhilippeFreestyle 3 years ago
No, you can switch the camera into SD mode and shoot standard def. video in 4:3 aspect ratio. If you're shooting in High Definition mode, it's always going to be 16:9. The SD 4:3 setting is nice because some of my older video projects are in SD so if I ever shoot additional footage to add to the project I can swith to SD.
warkilla 3 years ago
thnx for info, but with youtube compression ,it still hard to tell.
Can you compare its image to some serie on tv?
The roughest quality for me is 24 serie=5 pts>CSI miami =10 points( maximum ).
How many score you give to this canon?
thnx
idinho 3 years ago
That is a very subjective question. I really don't know how to answer that. I think the clarity of the video from the HV20 is as good as other HD camcorders that cost thousands more. If you really want to see the quality of the video this camera can put out, go to the website vimeo and do a search for Canon HV20, there are alot of sample videos there.
warkilla 3 years ago
can i know what rendering options did you use for this video (or for youtube)? and also for relatively good viewing quality in your computer? i cant seem to get the quality like yours in youtube. thanks man.
denester1 3 years ago
All I did was render it using adobe media encoder and encode it as a .wmv at about 1000mb/s bitrate. I think at that bitrate, it looks fairly good on your computer and a 10 minute video comes in under 100mb.
warkilla 3 years ago
So did you film this? If so.. GREAT JOB..
I also want to know.. There many videos of the HV20 on youtube.. and they all look diffrent.. Quality wise.. I own an Indie production company.. Now does the RAW footage in CINEMODE actually look as good as this does?
skylightdash 3 years ago
I did shoot this video. I shot it the first day I got the camera to take some footage home and play with it. I was blown away. I sold my Canon GL2 3CCD camcorders because they can't touch this camera. Cine mode does give video a nice soft look, however for action shots you might want to take it out of cine mode. But I leave my camera in Cine mode 99% of the time.

warkilla 3 years ago
quality is just terrible after all that converting, and all that. so help me out plz lol. your vid was great, my footage cant even compare. so basically im just asking is my system good enough to use this camera or do i need to upgrade lol.
jewrabs 3 years ago
I would def think about upgrading your computer. I have an Intel Duel Core processor with 2GB or ram and in Premier, even in draft mode, the video can be a little laggy. You'll also need a firewire port as well. Good luck :)
warkilla 3 years ago
ok i will definitely consider that...im just an amateur filmaker, teenager...so i gotta save up lol. but since this is a hi def cam. is it as simple as take the footage, USB it to pro and edit it? lol or should i say firewire it to pro lol. but all the hardware i need to actually edit the vid is a firewire port and a firewire?? nothing outta the ordinary?
jewrabs 3 years ago
Essentially yes. If you have hardware that can handle editing the large HD video files, all you'll need is a good non linear editor like premier, final cut pro, etc. etc. and capture the video to your computer and then edit that video. HD video requires alot more processing power than SD video so if you don't have a fast computer, I would def. suggest getting that first :)
warkilla 3 years ago
thanks man...that definitely helps...i just saw this handheld camera...and saw the footage and i was like...no way...for that much?? haha. well i got 20 bucks...gotta get a good comp. and the cam now. but luckily my b day is coming up. did you use a mac er PC? cuz i have the cs3 version of pro for PC. and everybodys tellin me to get a mac if ur gonna edit vids. is there absolutely anyway i could just flashdrive all the files for pro like the setup and whatnot and put em to mac? cuz its not that
jewrabs 3 years ago
i dont wanna use final cut. but it just took me sooooooooooo long to know how to use pro. i dont wanna convert...and lets face it. i dont got the cash for FCP!! haha. even with some minor adjustments...i heard there is a way u can use PC programs on macs...might you know how?? as you can tell, im pretty new to all this stuff haha.
jewrabs 3 years ago
Cool, thanks for the advice. I think for Cinemode, if I have more light it is less blurry.

YOu deleted my post. Really proffesional! YOu think that everybody is supposed to love all of your videos. I also like the hv20 otherwise I would not have come to your account. Well, have fun with your life. This looks like a jail to me. No freedom of expression. Take care.
elholandes 3 years ago
house music and nature video...mmm...that is not good. It ruins the tranquility. video still looks as it was shot with a cheap camera.
elholandes 3 years ago
I'm sorry if your limited appreciation for music ruined your viewing experience. Being that out of almost 50 thousand people, you're the only one to dislike the music, so I'm glad I didn't listen to you when I put this piece together. As for the quality of the footage, I hope you buy a $10k camera that makes you feel happy. I'll stick with my HV20 that didn't break the bank and will still produce as good of footage as any camera you might be able to afford :)
warkilla 3 years ago
Is there a retail store where you can purchase this camera, or is it online only?

I'm pretty sure you can pick it up at Best Buy, at least they used to sell it. Online is where you'll probably find the best deal though.
warkilla 3 years ago
very nice clips. I have a Canon Hv20 also but I notice when I'm filming sometimes, especially something in motion (like a person walking), the motion looks blurry or rather, choppy. Is there anything I can do about that?
PeterHXII 3 years ago
Have you tried adjusting what mode you're in? There's a Cine mode, and I think it's a little more blurry than say normal mode. Play around with the different modes available on the camera.
warkilla 3 years ago
Are you recording at 60i if so then that might be the problem 30p would not have that problem
al3xlol 3 years ago
You're propably shooting with 24P instead of 60i. Change HD standard from rec settings. If you shot in 24P, you'll have to make pulldown.
soomidude 3 years ago
Love this clip. Very nice camera as you show here. I'm not sure I understand what you say about the 24p. the 24p video stream is embedded in 60i. "In order to get the 24p video you need to perform a 2:3 pull down to extract the 24p video from the 60i stream."
Is there a way of explaining in layman terms?
From what I read it is not that easy to get your 24p?
Thanks in advance!

??? for all... Is the HV30 worth getting over the HV20 for a bit more in price?
sergiotallin98 3 years ago
i just bought an HV20, and i checked up on the HV30 before buying... there are actually less features on the HV30 than the HV20, dont ask me why but its true... the major diff is that the HV30 is slightly smaller and has a longer bat life. get the HV20, its beautiful!
Beforex 3 years ago
Thanks for the info, I'm sure people will find it useful on here :)
warkilla 3 years ago
Better 'check up on it' a little bit better next time. They are the same size, and the HV30 offers an additional recording mode (30p recording on NTSC model), an improved LCD display screen, and the zoom toggle has been slightly improved. "Less features on the HV20" is false, even if you're talking about the PAL model.
Liroy323 3 years ago
Hi,
I was planning to get the HV20 and then I saw the HVX200. I dont know if you have any experience with the HVX200 but is it really that big of a difference ( disregarding the P2 media).
Thanks
patrickkirschner 3 years ago
Sorry, i'm not familiar with that camera. All I know is at the time of purchasing this camera it was the cheapest/best quality camera on the market. I've had it for a year or two now and have loved it! It shoots really great video. I'm sure any of Canon's HD prosumer camcorders would work great!
warkilla 3 years ago
wait, how much did you pay for the HVX200?
hamslam2003 3 years ago
i have a question myself about adobe premiere.
everytime i turn my project into a movie, the file ends up like.. 1.4 GB and i cant upload it to youtube, why is it that huge, even when it's rendered?
RandomBroProductionS 3 years ago
You need to choose what compression format you want to use. You can export as a .avi using various video codecs, divx, xvid, etc. etc. Or you can chose to export using adobe media encoder which will let you encode in .mpg or .wmv and you can chose the output size of the final file. Just make sure your video is no longer than 10 min and change your settings to the final output of the file is less than 100mb and you should be good to go :)
Good Luck!
warkilla 3 years ago
When you render it, make sure to choose the appropriate video codec. Right now you're probably rendering it uncompressed. Try exporting the video using the adobe media encoder which comes with premier and save it as a .wmv video file and change the bitrate to 1000kb/s and keep the video at 10 min long. The resulting file should be under 100mb.

Hi, I have some questions
1- What brand of film do you use?
2- Did you use cina mode for this upload?
3- Have you tried using the canon as a webcam via fire wire?
Thank you
Michele
windysky4u 3 years ago
I usually use Maxell's I believe. They're super cheap from Wallmart and I used them in my canon GL2's for years without any issues.
I think I may have been in Cine Mode, but i'm not positive.
I have not used the camera as a webcam. I think there's software out there that can use your MiniDV camcorder as a webcam though, but again I haven't tried that, I already have a webcam.
warkilla 3 years ago
At least my piece-of-crap sony dcr-hc44E works as a webcam..
3nimal 3 years ago
ive used my hv20 as a webcam to asnwer question 3, and yes it was via firewire.
you dont need any software or anything just plug it in and switch to DV mode (cant webcam in HDV) and the comp will act like there is a webcam present.

I heard of people making the 35mm DOF adapter them selves for a fraction of the price it would cost to buy the Letus 35mini. The video you posted, that guys says he made his? I need more info.
drsizzle215 3 years ago
yeah just search around for DIY DOF adapters for Canon HV20 or Camcorders and you'll find quite a few links and threads. Some of them require a fair amount of technical know how and still cost a decent amount for the materials. I'll probably just save my money and buy one someday :) Maybe by then Canon will offer a model that can attach lenses from the factory :)

what is a 60i pulldown? is it because video-streaming on youtube is set at standard 60i?
bazle64 4 years ago
Look back through all of the comments on this video to see if you can't answer your own question, if you can't get back to me. Good Luck!
warkilla 4 years ago
pulldown only applies to 24p video. if you use premiere pro though you never have to worry about it...it autodetects what you shot in, either 24p, 3op or 60i, and captures accordingly.
crobs808 4 years ago
does FCP detect it or do i manualy have to do the 2:3 pulldown... or is there a capture setting like there is for hdv and sd

First question, did you enhanced the colors on this video with premiere pro? Second, did you do on purpose or is it that the stability is not so good, it keeps shaking when you move a little.
vajmaivkub86 4 years ago
I did saturate the colors slightly in premier. As for the shakiness, it's probably just me. That was literally the first thing I shot when I bought this camera. This was just some test footage right when I pulled it out of the box so I was still learning how to use the camera. I didn't use a tripod or any sort of steading device, just shot it all from the hip :) Love the camera though!
warkilla 4 years ago
Thanks a lot. I wish you the best!
vajmaivkub86 4 years ago
how comes u dont need to do pulldown with 25p footage?
Maz1989 4 years ago
You certainly could if you really wanted too. I performed a pull down on some test clips and I personally couldn't tell that much of a difference so I just leave my footage alone.
warkilla 4 years ago
25p... if you shoot pal isnt that its native framerate or is it 25i

hey dude! i got now an SONY DCR-TRV125E

1 question.
how you get such high quality video on youtube?
can you say how you render it to get such nice quality!
thanks.
wouter
PM me if you want my msn.
wouterthebmxer 4 years ago
I didn't do anything special. I exported it as a .wmv out of adobe premier at a bit rate of about 1000kps.
Didn't do anything too special. I find that a 10 minute video at 1000kps winds up being about 80mb, it produces a decent video for local playback and a nice video on YouTube :) Hope you enjoy the camera, I love it so far!
warkilla 4 years ago
if you output to .FLV @ ~200kbps in 320x240 mono sound youtube shouldn't have to convert it at all. this equals a better overall quality, smaller file size (like 1/10th of a high quality WMV) and the vid is available sooner as youtube doesn't have to re-render it
bugzrrad 4 years ago
Hey there,
I was wondering if you could film in 24p mode without HD format. Does this camera still get really good picture in DV or only HD?
supersonix6 4 years ago
I'm not sure if you can record in 24p in regular DV mode.
To answer your other question, I've shot some stuff in regular DV mode with this camera to integrate new footage into an old project that was shot in 4:3 regular DV and it looked great.
warkilla 4 years ago
Wow, that is incredible! I just got a HV20 and I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 and trying to fiddle with the settings to upload decent quality to youtube. What settings do you use? Do you upload .flv files? Any help would be appreciated greatly!
genogeno1234 4 years ago
Nope, just exported as a .wmv from premier. I usually encode around 1000kps and it looks pretty decent on youtube.
warkilla 4 years ago
hey, would this be a good camera to film skateboarding?
ferrier11 4 years ago
Yeah sure, it would work fine.
warkilla 4 years ago
Man you are one of the (or the) most helpful utube responders there is for this cam! :)
I'm actually narrowing my cam decision to this or a sony model, but now leaning for HV20 for price, most off.
The 'Rainy Day Cinematgphy' vid is incredible too.
Q: is Premier best soft for the HV20??
Thanks-
geogenerated 4 years ago 2
There is no "Best Software" for video editing, probably the two most popular are Adobe Premier and Final Cut Pro. I went to school and learned how to use the adobe suite and so thats what I stick with. They're both very similar and I think you'd be happy with either one you chose. The nice theing about the adobe suite is that all their apps work together so it makes post production very easy from design, editing and output to DVD. Check out the entire adobe creative suite.

ERROR: HDVSPlit can't find MPEG1 audio decoder. Try to install and configure ffdshow.
Audio is turned off. This is what I get when i now use hdvsplit.
cjt321 4 years ago
Well, what you should do is plug your camera in, use hdvsplit just like you did before to capture your video. Go to the directory where the file that hdvsplit exported. It should have the file extension .mt2, simply rename the extension to .mpg or .mpeg and then try playing the file.
warkilla 4 years ago
(Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.) This is the message I am getting after I change m2t to mpg or even mpeg on the Windows Media Player. Thank you for giving me advice-- I am completely lost.

I can't figure out how to play my videos on my computer. I bought firewire and installed it. I have read hundreds of ways to do it. I used hdvsplit, but i can't figure out what to do with it after that. I have windows xp and I need help.
cjt321 4 years ago
if you used hdvsplit it most likely saved the files with a .m2t file extension. Just rename the file and change the .m2t to .mpg and you should be able to play the file using windows media player or any other player that supports mpg or mpeg playback. Let me know if that helped?

how do you compare this to the new canon hg10? is there a difference on the quality? yours is so clear especially the link you've provided.
roltab 4 years ago
Well the main difference is that one uses tapes one uses hard drives. Storing large amounts of video without a blu-ray dvd burner or Terabytes of storage is difficult. That's why Tapes are still nice because they're cheap and you've got your raw film any time you need it. Plus the HG10 uses a compressed video format that a lot of video editing programs can't edit.
warkilla 4 years ago
That's amazingly beautiful. I've been wanting to get a video camera like this one for a while now. How does your computer handle it? I've only got 512mb of ram and a 64mb video card. I think it's time for an upgrade. I just don't know how far I should upgrade....
