  • excelent remake on a clasic

  • bring the old RCHP back. They are still good, old cant be compared though. badass AK and all.

  • @esta49 I think they're gone unfortunately - old Peppers are gone and done and over with

  • Flea makes it. Funk and soul.

  • that last little guitar ditty in the end is fucking sick as fuck.

  • I love this song is the true

  • funkiest rock band on the planet. been my favorite sound since '90 and they're still doing it hard! go flea and anthony!

  • I'm 15 and I miss Hillel.

  • I happen to love this version because it was creative to use the chorus, it just brings the harmonies together well and I love the high notes he hits near the end. The original is great too. Etta James version is really good.

  • I will say that although I'm a huge fan of the original sylvester Stewart version, the harmonies they added with the humming during the chorus was absolutely brilliant. It was one of those esoteric things that brought it all together. For this I give them and george Clinton much credit.

  • @ukwihytcm Hey. I shower. You walking piece of poo.

  • Say what you will, i'm not sure many other bands could get away with covering this song.

  • When i heard this for the first time i instantly LOVED this song such a great cover!

  • Hillel Slovak was so fucking Funky!

  • Regarding @ukwihytcm comments, "Don't hate the black, don't hate the white; If you get bitten, just hate the bite" ~Sly Stone

  • I can't tell how many nights I spent listening to this song when I was young an fucked up, shooting dope and just crying. This shit always moved me. Even though I'm I'n a better place now this song will always haunt me.

  • i've always wanted to dance this song

  • Arab Funk 4 Life!!!!!!!

  • About 50% as good as the original.

  • Not even close to sounding as good as Sly...no funk...just white guys wishing like the rest of you wet dog smelling whites...they fucked this song up...but that is what you dog smelling whites do...too bad you couldn't have died like that piece of shit jesus on the cross...fuck god for creating you...

  • @ukwihytcm Im sorry for your racism... :/ Learn to respect other ethnicities and cultures.

  • @ukwihytcm And jesus was a hebrew/arab, not white.

  • @ukwihytcm u mad?

  • @ukwihytcm No brother would ever write shit this stupid...

  • @1953taggie Guess what.... This tune WAS written by a brother.

  • @ukwihytcm if "white" means to be like you then i'm glad that God didn't make me white

  • @ukwihytcm Oh you mean Sly and his white drummer and sax player. FAIL

  • @ukwihytcm wow man it because of people like u that sly ended up the way he did he strive so much to remove color from the issue through music and love and people like u spit on his face and his legacy. sorry sir but if u even like sly a lil bit u got the message all wrong, but dont ever disrespect his dream ever again

peace, love, and all that good shit

  • @ukwihytcm youre just jealous

  • to all all the haters go FUNK your selves

  • Love the Peppers, but this song blatantly shows their greatest weakness: their inability to write enough of their own material.

Sly blows this version out of the water---and he wrote it.

  • @Christlovesanimals Thats not theyre weakness. They have very very much songs that are their material. Meny albums.

  • @gugulis1188 Dude: I have been a fan of the Peppers probably since you were a kid. Of course, they've written some very good songs.

But they've taken too many from other artists too. They have a writing limit: thus they have a WEAKNESS.

  • @Christlovesanimals RHCP is way better at what they do than you are at what you do so shut the fuck up Jesus freak. If you don't like it when a quality band covers a great song then you must be stupid enough to believe in Jesus.

  • @Nottafannabamma Wow...the gates of the Fucktard Farm must've been left open last night.

Hope you find your way back son...oh...and some musical taste and sophistication.

  • Man... THIS SONG IS SO AMAZING!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! SO MUCH!!!! I feel so good with this song!

  • I expected a lot more from the Chili Peppers on this song. Stiff as shit and has nowhere near the swing of the original. Even Etta James version still has the swing which is totally missing in this white boy version.

  • @CribNotes This definitely has a different feel, but you have to admit the groove is tight! Love Sly's version but this appeals to me in it's own way.

  • You don't have to be a certain age or born in a certain era to love or respect music so to all the kids out there that think they're something special just because they like 'old music', please don't confuse your music taste for who you are.

  • RIP Hillel

  • Gosh.. the baseline at the intro just KILLS me. God I love you Flea.

  • This is and will remain my all time favorite song.

  • Every song RHCP touches turns to gold

  • They aren't even close this classic nowadays. Sad but true.I prefer it to original sly, maybe cause i listened to it first ,back when i was 13.

  • i never knew this cover existed haha. but def a great cover of the sly classic!

  • This is tight!

  • @DISPENSER4HIRE You're right...the o.g. is better....can you believe i never heard it until now? Learn something every day.

  • i love the backing vocals... and awesome pic btw (;

  • thank you so moch!

  • who;s the man standind next to chad>

  • @marilakiphcpfan07 Chad isn't in this picture. From left to right it is Cliff Martinez (drums), Hillel Slovak (guitar), Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Flea (bass)

  • The Pepper are Funkin' cool.

  • peppers always funk me right

  • i just took a red monkey and im feelin GREAT. I love this song, and both versions. And the chili peppers liked this song so they covered it. Not to make a better version.

  • great beat!

  • you have to love the red hots, this band inspied me to be into rock. so did the bassist, he also inspired me to play bass

  • @thehardyzdxdx Well then your a massive dumbass...cause this song is not rock! Its fucking FUNKY as FUCK!

Funk is such an underrated genre these days, yet its probably the most sampled and covered through the medium of other genres i.e. hip hop. Lets get some decent fucking music back into the charts! Lets get FUNK back into the charts man!

Peace and Love! Cheeba Cheeeba! x

  • @ashmeister123 He said the BAND inspired him into rock music, he didn't say the SONG did. RHCP is a rock band. Whether they're doing their funk rock music, their punk rock music, or their alternative rock. They are a rock band. So you kind of look like a dumb ass.

  • @demondude323 While ashmeister123 is an idiot and definitely looks like a dumb-ass, RHCP are first and foremost a funk band, saying funk rock is pointless. Modern country sounds much more like modern rock than rock sounded in the 70s, as does most pop music, so why is it such a stretch to think that mainstream rock has simply colored over into the genre of funk, it's not rock, it's just current evolution of funk.

  • Look, its's a bird.

  • In all honesty i prefer this one to the sly stone version but they are both epic :)

  • qué buen tema y qué lejos quedó la secundaria, loco!

  • sick cover

  • Great song. Always loved it. Fave off Freaky Styley! Great LP. I find many RHCP fans have never heard it as they never go backwards of Californication or Blood Sugar. As soon as If You Have to Ask sunk in I bought everything of theirs. Different times I spose.

  • @Chandrajazzwad i was born in 95 and listened from bssm on to their new one, but until last year i started to listen to earlier albums like freaky styley

  • This song kicks ass, nuff said. If you don't like it, you're obviously not funky enough.

  • Ive watch many covers of this song and every single last one sucked. including this one Stop it people

  • @hyphiegirl12 someone's on their period

  • I REALLY love the instruments in this one better than Sly Stones. I am not bagging on Sly, because he invented this master piece and I never would dis on him.

  • Great song!! Our band covered it Because of this version!! You should check it out on our profile!! Long live RHCP!!!

  • this is awful sorry but damn

  • @soleadsnake26 Idiot.

  • @soleadsnake26 Fuck off you tone deaf cunt

  • i just heard original version of this song and have to admit, even tho i like red hot, they did a truly bad job. the song sucks butt.

  • Kiedis can't capture the lounge lizard sound of Sly, but man does Flea rock the hell out of that bassline.

  • <lynfendleyfoster, you suck ass

  • you dont have to like this more than the original but respect it because this album was produced by the the other funk master george clinton

  • favorite peppers song...maybe...taste the pain is in the competition...

  • The Red Hot Chili Peppers embody the term "diversity." Their diverseness in music appreciation, exploration and presentation is awesome. I wish they'd do "One Nation Under a Groove."

These guys are thexy, thrilling, thun, and thabulously great muscisians. Thanks George Clinton.

  • Kudos to the RHCP for choosing to cover this song. Shows what good taste in music they have, and I think Anthony Kiedis does a fine job here. Still love the original best, but I'm glad they're exposing a new generation to Sly & the Family Stone. ;-)

  • @lynfendleyfoster

NOOOO!!!! george clinton convinced them to cover it

  • I prefer the original, but love the chilis! :)

  • The voice in the beginning does remind me a little bit of Ima Robot, whut.

  • I don't get why there's such a divide on whether this one is better than the original or not...personally I like both. That being said, RHCP's version will probably always be called second best if only for the fact that Sly did the original. So basically it's all just a matter of time, not as in "a matter of time before etc'" but literally a matter of the fact that Sly was first that makes his better.

  • old rhcp isnt as good but its still valueable, it makes me think of the late 80's early ninties and the city, vibes

  • @thramagen are you kidding me its so much better... by the way and stadium arcadium shouldnt even be albums.. they are just explorations in to shitty music.

  • @fowter1 sure

  • @fowter1 yea i guess thats why their one of their two best selling albums...and im a hardcore classic peppers fan...

  • Freaky Styley and proud.

  • it's all in the bass

  • well skybluemarshall we've now been to Sly School , thanks for the opinion but thats all it is jack.

  • Used to drive to and from the beach with the Chili's playing.

    Amen

  • he did a halfway good job

  • this is better

  • I AM SORRY THIS AINT GOT SHIT ON THE ORIGINAL

  • RHCP fucking LOVED SLY.. FUCKING LOVED SLY. So why do you sit here debating who did a better job. Music is the best thing we've been graced with on this planet.. so don't be putting down Sly's original.. Sly's original helped to futurely create a brilliant rendition of prior beauty. Just love music you guys. Don't debate.. at least debate about shit that needs changing like today's excuse for music..

  • ACABO DE TERMINAR CON MI NOVIA

PUSE ESTA CANCION Y AHORA ESTOY

    HUNDIDO EN LA TRISTEZA :(

LES DESEO LO MEJOR A TODOS

Y NO LO KE ME STA PASANDO A MI :(

  • Can't both versions be just good, each one in its own way?

Love and hear both of them. It's just a question of mood.

  • @bobwertman Yeah! They're both great!

  • @bobwertman I totally agree! Grew up on Sly Stone but this is "tight" in it's own right..

  • lol everyone here saying sly is superior is like aged 50, If you like sly's version so much go to that video instead of bawwing here. You should know better ¬¬ There's no point in doing a cover if it's a carbon copy. I suppose you hate Kermit Ruffin's version too

  • 10 people didn't wanna stay

  • the original is better

  • I truly love this.

  • I was 13 when sly did this.;I lived in Edwardsburg MI at that time. This sounds great!!!! This is not disco funk, this is something different. Not sure what. I listen to all R^R, mettalica, beatles, etc but this tune had somnething different. ThX SLY

  • Hmmmm........not too bad, my first hearing this but ofcourse its nearly as funky as sly but I dig it, yeah I think I dig it!!!!! big ups for them payin homage to the legendary Sly Stone.

  • Ya this shit doesn't even compare to the original peeps. WTF.

  • I'm so sick of every other video of a song over 15 years old hearing "I'M __age__ AND I LIKE THIS".

    How could you not anyway?

  • Where did you get the kickass picture of the Peppers for this video? I love it and never seen it before.

  • I wish the chili's would personally make a soundtrack for sex

  • @SHAZZAM123455 It's called Sir Psycho Sexy

  • i have to ask what the driving force of questioning which is better, the original or the remake........ now take in mind that the remake stayed pretty true to the original. letting bias get in the way of just enjoying music is well very 1960 wake up .. i happen to like them both

  • Cosign with skybluemarshall. Sly had a drippy feel to his best stuff, like honey or molasses. He's in no hurry at all, true head noddin stuff. RHCP understands the vibe, I dunno if some commenters do.

  • ooohh poor hillel...we missed you :(

  • Damn good cover.

  • This is good, but i like the original better, great tribute though they respect him to do it right :)

  • I'm a 5 yr old musicican here i Seattle, WA and I was always chosen to sing Sly in the cover clubs we played. I've always like the RHCP's in their own style. Thought they were preety funk. I say taht as a funkatear. So I when I hard they had cover this tun I rally wanted to see if they could pull it oof. Flea holds in down, so does the drummer. But the rst of the band is smokin' too. The vocals relly got me, especially the backing vocals. Real SMOOTH. Play it again Sam!

  • I can cry when i hear this song.

  • I'm 20 and my age is irrelevant!

  • I prefer the Sly Stone version, but this one is pretty funky too for sure. :)

  • anyone else notice the similarity to "taste the pain"?

  • im like 13 and like horny.

  • the chili peppers with daddy producing and the end result is a cover done wif justice.

got fred and maceo on the horns....too damned funky.

  • the chili peppers with daddy producing and the end result is a cover done wif justice.

  • you guys think this cover is good CHECK OUT THE WOOTEN BROTHERS COVER! you wont regret it i dont want to cause an argument but the wooten brothers version is a lot better and lots more funkeh

  • Sly wrote it - Sly birthed it - Sly lived it ...... apples and oranges

  • Number one is gonna be number one

  • original shits on this from such a height

  • Not bad, but Sly & the Family Stone can't be beat.

  • These boys are crazy trying to cover a Sly Stone song. Stick to the Ohio Players cause Sly can't be matched.

  • they are doing a remake from sly and the family stone look it up the same title

  • i love the guitar bit at 3:43. i have no idea why that bit especially but its just so awesome =P

  • @94Hooch10

yes! thank you, someone who loves that part of the song too! always gives me goosebumps without fail, it's just so light but funky

  • i like this song :)

  • I would marry the bass line of this song.

  • @Josip185 If you love it so much why don't you marry it then! ...oh wait..

  • this is shit, sorry but i've always hated these guys, i'm embarassed by this cover, you can't beat sly's version

  • @joezetank Just 'cause you don't like it doesn't mean it's shit, just means you've got shit taste, there's a difference :]

Next time, please avoid making the same mistake.

  • @SaveIggy and just because you like it doesn't mean it's good,

    hypocrite

  • Comment removed

  • @joezetank Alright, alright calm down. I never said it was any good. Just don't talk shit about a band because you don't necessarily appreciate what they do.

You like the original and they obviously do too otherwise they wouldn't have covered. I seriously doubt they were trying to be better than Sly and the family stone, they probably just covered because they thought it was a cool song, and it is.

Just don't talk shit about them for doing what they enjoy.

  • @SaveIggy woh man, take it easy, don't go saying i have shit taste, different people have different opinions on what is good music, who knows, maybe you are the one with shit taste?

  • @joezetank Fine, alright you don't have shit taste, just don't insult, what is in my opinion, one of the best bands to come out from america.

  • @SaveIggy good for you, can we please just leave it there?

  • @joezetank You guys can leave it their, but i won.

  • @joezetank Whatever you want sunshine

  • This almost doesn't sound like Anthony singing...its not George is it?

  • I hate the vocals on this. The music just doesn't hit nearly as hard as the original. I'd probably dig this if the original didn't exist.

  • @spideymayne Heh, I hear you. Nobody could possibly compare to the vocals of Sly, I am sure Anthony would also say this.

  • sly is the man

  • It's nice how they managed to expand the song.

  • R. I. P. Hillel but John kicks azz!!!!!!!!!

  • I didn't know this was a cover.... This song have a nice groove to it... I started listening to the Chili Peppers when Blood Sugar Sex Magick came out but now i'm venturing into their older albums.... Funkadelic

  • This is a very good, solid cover of a funk classic. Nothing more, nothing less. People commenting on the Sly videos and saying that the RHCP is way better, need to go to R&B, soul, funk school. Bigger, bolder and brighter, does not equal better. There is a lazy, laidback, California summertime, feel to Sly's slower songs. It's buried in Graham's bass line, it permeates Sly's voice, it slides off the guitars and out of the horns. RCHP heard it. They pay tribute to it, but they do not do it better

  • @skybluemarshall For me it's not about who's better. Sly or RCHP. Don't trynna compare them to each other.. just enjoy the funky soul music.

  • @skybluemarshall get a life

  • @garbageman211

    Jealous of highest comment much.

  • @skybluemarshall actually.. haha. they do.

    :).

the first time i listened to freaky styley for the first time all the way through, and this song came on. i knew it was meant to be in this world. this album.

  • @skybluemarshall i am sad to tell you that you made a little mistake in your comment. Its larry graham who made the bassline it was sly stone himself, he did most of the lines on fresh. for the rest of your comment: +1 the peppers did a great job but it only a cover

  • @Darkota122 i ment ...... It wasn't larry graham(i made a mistake there)

  • @Darkota122 I'm aware. That's why I did not say this song. I said "in Sly's slower songs". Most of them have the same summertime feeling that this song has to it. You are right. This great bassline is Sly and it equals some of Larry's great lines, in it's laid back vibe and it's feeling.

  • @skybluemarshall I love the RHCP, one of my top five favorite bands, but I totally agree, while the Chili Peppers "pay tribute, they do not do it better," the original is perfect and hearing it back in the 70s as well as now, awesome memories and great, great song!!

  • @skybluemarshall RHCP version is indeed better. Just the thought of FLEA TEARING THIS SHIT UP makes me get goosebumps!!! fucking amazing song

  • @skybluemarshall You said it best. Glad some people are able to recognize that originating a song takes more talent and creativity than remaking someone else's work. It's like the difference between creating an original painting from a blank canvas and a reproduction. The copy can be just as beautiful, but it's still a copy. The original artist deserves more credit,

  • @skybluemarshall actually sly stone wrote the bassline. Graham left the band over a year earlier

  • @elijah514514 Ah man! You wrecked my poetic comment. Oh well, you get the idea. This song has that signature, laid back Sly style. It's silky, smooth, funky and mellow. I just like it better and not just because I'm an older dude. I like RHCP a lot and I think they are a great band.

  • @skybluemarshall Well said friend

  • @skybluemarshall Actually Larry Graham left the band a year before this record came out, i'm positive that this was Sly himself playing bass. I love this album though it was the funkiest one that the chili peppers came out with IMHO. George Clinton producing must have had something to do with it =p

  • @newyorklyfe420 Thanks, I did a little checking and I now realize, it was Sly on the Bass. But somehow, my point seems to be completely lost, simply because of one, simple, factual error. In my opinion, it actually strengthens my point. Sly's excellent style and influence as writer and a musician, created the undeniable, funky groove of Sly and the Family Stone. He is a true master of soul and funk, who is often imitated, but never equaled. But, there is no denying the greatness of RHCP as well
