These buttons are not heat sensitive - search Google for "Otis TD73" or "Otis 2040". They work by capacitance and electrostatic field. Wikipedia and electricstuff . co . uk have more information on thyratron tubes.
There is a tower located @ 55 East Washington in Chicago, IL. that has the exact same heat sensitive call buttons, they are not in use anymore (they were in use till about mid 2005), and they have a modern button setup next to the now defunct touch ones
Old School out the yingyang! The Capwells department store in Oakland, CA had elevators with those types of fixtures. I think your cab interior is not original, it looks newer. I could be wrong.
Who else was with you before Jimster got on? I think someone else was whispering.
touch sensitive buttons are nice. that light rim around it is cool. wood is a good choice for that elevator. my JVC should be able to film in that light.
why are 2, 3 and 4 missing? (sometimes the lowrise elevator is somewhere else.)
There was one instance, easilly found searching Google, that firefighters had to rescue their own, because someone started a fire outside an elevator, and the buttons forced it to stop on that floor. Because the buttons were "always pressed", the elevator could not leave the scene.
You would think nowadays they could make those buttons touch-sensitive where heat alone could not activate them but a physical presence would have to be registered before the buttons would respond. Or maybe heat above so much would not activate the buttons. Touch sensitive seems a better type. They should come up with them. This is the new millennium!
They kind-of did, although it's still a push-button, but some newer buttons have super-shallow travel distance, almost giving that sensation of a Heat-Sensitive button. DD was fooled by one of these setups. :)
@georgef551 But if the elevator was equipped with fire service, it would ignore any calls and immediately return to the recall floor. Just check any demo...
These buttons were discontinued, because fires would call the elevator to an engufed floor.
I think in today's Tuch-Sensitive Buttons (which ARE, now that I seen them live), are Resistive-based, which doesn't trigger under high heat, like Capacitive ones do.
I love these elevators, reminds me of the ones in the Empress Hotel we have here in Victoria which are the exact same touch sensitive buttons. Interestingly enough though this elevator also has 3 non-stop buttons near the bottom. I hope they never modernize these, cause let's face it. Today's Otises just aren't made like they used to be.
cool...
no stop button (at 1:27 )

@Computerhelp92 They are like phantom buttons. They resemble 2, 3, 4, but are labeled no-stop since that is an express zone.

Nice elevator. I remember The Camelot Hotel (now Doubletree) and the Holiday Inn (now LaQuinta Inn and Suites) had these fixtures.

Very nice elevator, and I wonder why floors 2, 3, and 4 are skipped, along with 12 being locked.
CaptainElevator42189 1 year ago
uhh 2 3 and 4 were originally the store, and im not too sure about why 12 don't work. these only serve one and 11. but they are beautiful!
dieselducy 1 year ago
Interesting indeed. Maybe 12 has private offices up there.
CaptainElevator42189 1 year ago
No Stop Button? That's good, you can film without stopping on calls from floor.
ElevationLowJJ 1 year ago
@ElevationLowJJ Those buttons are buttons that are for floors within the express zone.

One thing to NOT like about the Heat-Sensitive Buttons: Instant Death Traps.
If they replace the hall stations, then it's fine.
georgef551 1 year ago
you seem to know alot about this. please elaborate. I know fire can ring the elevator? has it ever happened?
dieselducy 1 year ago
@dieselducy
Yes, it has.

@georgef551 I'm saying fire service would prevent the elevator from operating in the first place.
suzzex 1 year ago
@suzzex
True, but in these cases, the buttons are triggered, prior to Fire Service being engaged. That's how 2 firefighters on a story got trapped.
