I don't think it's a very good design choice that the first (optional) area has key plot points. If you put major plot points in a level, don't make it optional. Also the first level seems to have you stumbling over fire flowers at every turn.

I made that sprite. =D It allows for up to 32 unique messages per level number. More if you do cycling/random messages. And it also allows you to display two messages back-to-back. So in theory you could have like 1024 unique messages in one level. Which isn't even possible.

Part of me wants to say that all the sprite replacements are in place because those aren't Bowser's legions. I think I recall the Goombas and Koopas, as we know them, not to be true native species of the Kingdom... Or something.

The Yoshi who said his canary died is probably a reference to a method miners used to check their mines for lethal gas. They would send the canary in, and if it didn't come back, then it probably died of gas.
