  • Electro Jerry coming through

  • Thanks for posting this. I attended this show. It's important to note that this was Father's Day.

  • A beautiful song. I never, ever cry; but sometimes the wind makes by eyes water when I hear this song.

  • @owenseightball - you should just suck on an eight ball because you've got your own damn opinion, but just because he had a drug problem doesn't mean that he didn't LOVE AND CARE DEEPLY about his daughter. i've lost both parents to drugs and i know that they both LOVED AND CARED about me and they were trying to do any and everything to get there lived together. just because it seems you've got such a picture perfect world where there could be no wrongs doesn't mean others don't have problems.

  • when i was little this was one of my favorite songs ... it was awesome to hear it again, just a little emotional. <3

  • @owenseightball How classy to disrespect a man who has been dead for over 20 years...you are an asshole, sir.

  • been so long since I heard this, need a tissue

  • @Ckill001 Me too..last time I heard this was dancing with my dad at my wedding....we both cried our hearts out

  • Amazing Pic. There is nothing like the relationship between a Father and his little girl. The Dead were amazing with Brent and as Phil said they never really caught the flame very often after Brent passed. As the Beats said, nothing good lasts.

  • for Bill.tears.

  • Somewhere there is a video of this, pretty sure. I didn't always care for the midi sounds Jerry and Brent were using during this era, but he was so highly skilled and most significantly seemed to be such a genuine guy. As far as family life comments made here, remember the Dead had children all over the place in a sense. Maybe the world would be better if we adopted that mentality.

  • Walk a mile in a man's shoes before you judge him. Judge not lest ye be judged.

  • yeah, a little harsh, considering the point of view. judgement is best left alone.

  • Brent i was such a big fan my friends called me a Brenthead back in the day lol. I miss you man, sorry you fell prey to that needle. That needle fucked you and it fucked you hard. I hope you and Jerry are having fun jamming in heaven. Peace...

  • I have so many photos of my 1995 wedding, and we made tie dye handkerchiefs for all the groomsmen including my Father. It was an awesome wedding where we only played tapes from other shows after the meal. Everyone commented on all of the music. The reason I replied to your post is because I know what it's like losing your parents, and it's simply fantastic that you have that memory of your Dad. Even though he is not here anymore, you have that. Keep it close for life.

  • If I could have the experience depicted in that photo with my daughter I would be the happiest man alive. Apparently drugs are a lot stronger draw than I will ever imagine.

  • no words can fill the air like his did,, i love an miss you brent

  • this is a special song,my ex sent this to our daughter a year before his unexpected death, she will appreciate it when she is older! I will be sure to explain it to her.he was a HUGE dead fan,i play it in memory of him all the time!!

  • brent always was and always will be my favorite GD keyboardist.

  • @cjrebouche HELL YAH!!!!! he made the band.

  • I SO MISS THIS!

  • It's the curse of the GD keyboard players....It's sad :-( This pictures is so sweet, and it's so sad. (~);}

  • i remember making a friend listen to this song back in college ('94). and then having to explain the meaning. the picture is from "without a net". i just pointed to the picture, and explained, " father daughter, she's here, he's not." i think he finally got it.

  • The perfect photo for this.... and such a sad end loss of life. I loved watching Brent play. Thats all I will say.

  • I was at this show. It was sooo cute to see him sing this one to his daughter. We all had that wonderful joint heart tugging moment.

I'm sorry Brent had the demons he did. Hopefully he found his peace.

  • SO sad. I loved Brent. He was so sad though. I feel terrible that someone who made so many people happy was so sad.

  • I may have been at this show... Brent was and will always be the best keys the Dead ever had. RIP. Miss him.

  • Fare thee well to a brother.

  • My Daughter...Jessica was barely 2 years old when I heard this song on the radio (sitting in the car with her in a car seat) after they announced Brent had died...I cried....and still do........ every time I hear this

  • The pic is great! It just captures the perfect moment for this song!! RIP Brent miss ya buddy.

  • a friend of mine was discussing this song before a show....he didnt like it at all...

well of course the dead played it that night.....and he had tears in his eyes...great song.....just great...

  • love and miss you rest in peace brother

  • Miss him as much as I miss Jerry....

  • Brent, I love you, man.

  • brings tears to this dead head eyes

  • Shoreline my favorite venue, well franklin field an soldier were most awsome as well

  • Miss you Brent the light for the Grateful Dead began to dim when you died. The light went out on 95-08-09. Dude had the best pure vocal ability of anyone ever in the Dead. "Sorry Pig" You were the bluesman. Beautiful song. I don't even have kids and it makes me cry.

  • Boss this is a band that was trying new shit, this is a wonderful era of a band, the voices aged, still willing to learn new technology..not willing to fall by the gutter as painful as it was for them to go on tour..they did. This is my era,I fell in love with them in this time. Born in 69 Biatch

  • This was my first show too!

  • This was my first Grateful Dead show! :)

  • I remember how special being at this show was....when the crowd responded to I Will Take You Home just gently rocking back and forth, like everyone just kind of KNEW they were experiencing something magical -- just didn't realize the depth till a few months later....like Brent was saying "goodbye"..... may the four winds blow you safely home, Brent....RIP

  • Brent was the best keyboardist (and maybe also the best singer) the Dead had. Jerry knew it, and loved him. We can see lots of eye contact between them two in videotaped concerts. They shared some special kind of complicity, to say. But I wonder... a guy who writes such a wonderful lullaby to his daughter... why in the world could he shoot speeball to death ?

  • The band did say when brent came aboard we finally got some one who can sing

  • Umm, Brent was torn to pieces from going through a painful divorce - and the thoughts of being separated from his lovely family/daughter were just too much for him, like so many, he self medicated = it was a mistake, not a plan.......you might consider toning down the judgments till you walk in someone else's shoes....

Peace be with you, yours and theirs too...

    TDK

  • "all a friend could say it's a fucken shame!"

  • Thank you so much Bginna.

You cant get lost when your always found...

    Pure Goosebumps

  • always brings a tear to my eye. A classic song!!

  • Happy Birthday, Brent, wherever you are. ♥

  • This song has always had special meaning to me and now especially after becoming a Father it takes on more meaning. Brent was my favorite. RIP

  • Actually, after brent's death, at the next set of shows at the shoreline, jerry did this song on the first night only. I was there... there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

  • Just curious when was that? It doesn't look like they played shoreline until 10/5/91. I think the last time played was 7/14/90 just before he died. Please let me know I would love to find it and hear Jerry do a touching version.

  • You're right, of course, Look for those tapes. It was definitely the shoreline so it must've been '91! [let me know if you find it, I will look too.I have some pretty good connections for board recordings.] 18 years ago! can you believe it. I done so much acid i'm fortutnate to remember anything at all...lol

  • You obviously took too much acid, because they never played this song again or any other Brent song after he died.

  • I have never heard nor heard of Jerry doing this song. Was it pre-show? What date? Are you sure?

  • A beautfully written song

  • truly an amazing song

  • I lost my Dad on April 22nd 1989, this song makes me think of him (and cry like a baby) My2great....... YOU HAVE 1 GRATEful DAD!!!!! R.I.P. it UP BRENT BABY!!!!

  • My Dad and I danced to this song for our father/daughter dance at my wedding. Dad died April 21st 2009. I miss him.

  • @my2greatgirls he loved you and you have my respects,i will pass tihs on to my daughter as well.

  • This was the first time I could sit and listen to the whole song through.

    The last time I did:

7-14-90, when I saw Brent play it live in Foxboro, MA. This was the next time Brent played it after this show, and it was the last time Brent and the Grateful Dead played the song.

  • What a great picture of the two !!!

  • great photo and thank you for posting this song i really need it- thank you

  • I miss you Brent!

  • This is a tragedy that is one of the few dark clouds which looms over the Grateful Dead lore. Hope you have found peace wherever you are, Brent.

  • @zachyd Why a tragedy? Yea brent dyin is and was but this is a beautiful son,he brought his daughter on stage to sing he a lullaby

  • @zachyd couldent have said it any better!

  • Heartbreaking.
