Is there not something poignant in the fact that someone as great a performer as EC could render such a song so blatantly banal? Is it his way of signaling his feeling of him 'getting there?' I don't necessarily agree with the detractors but to each his own in his descent into the darkness.
Great song, but I have to agree that there is a bit of Bob missing. Clapton is brilliant at many things but somehow for me this doesn't quite work. He knows a good song but somehow Dylan, whichever version he decides to do on the night, gets the feeling across a lot better. EC just a little less believable IMHO. By the way, how great to read such a friendly bunch of comments - guess the cranks haven't found this one yet - sigh
Bob Dylan probably is the only one of his generation who in his later years has written songs that can stand up to the masterpeices of their heydays. This rendition proves it.
Nevertheless, it's an inspired version and have to say, very much "easy to consume" version but have to say the spring tour of 2004 brought out the best ever renditions Bob Dylan ever gave of this song. If available, ceck it out also.
I think the only person playing an acoustic up there is the bassist (Nathan East?). Looks like Eric is playing his Byrdland he used earlier in the decade for "Over The Rainbow"
I was there on the opposite side and the front row!! I could see the flash on your video and wondered if anyone would catch you! Great concert. I shot the sheriff my favourite of the night, just like the crossroads DVD.
No. No. And one more time NO!!! He`s singing this song like a teacher on PROZAC. This is not a song about givin`it all up. This song is not LAID BACK, but still GOING STRONG.
Please post if you have this: Bob Dylan-Not Dark Yet-live 1998-great version

not a fraction of the weight the composer brings to it. Just a so so bar band cover version only some people pay hundreds to hear it. Why?

Lovely version! Only Eric could cover a Dylan song so well.

possibly the best homage to dylan i've seen..

it's a depressing song. It's a song about the inevitability of decay. Gallows humor or sarcasm? It's my favorite song on TOOM.

I'm glad Eric knows a good song. He doesn't do it as well as Bobby though.

@yochanan12 this is SO true. Most of them just live in the past. Dylan is one of the few that can brag himself about great songs even today.

Having Clapton cover one of your songs would have to be the greatest form of flattery.

What a nice surprise he did this song - and with Andy FWL! Andy was a great fixture on many Roger Waters tours.

Saw him the night after at MEN and this song for me was the best of the night.
On another subject anyone know what the small amp is that Clapton's using? (It's on the drum riser behind him).

Shadows are falling and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is running away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

Andy Low, didn't reconize him. Is he back in Claptons band? Maybe this time around Clapton will let him play some solos? Thanks for the info......
