  • Wow! I was in grade school when this came out in movie theaters. Its very interesting to see such footage being released since so many of us saw the movie when it came out.

  • The mom was a good actress.

  • This is how it's done. Still good to see the same spirit came through in the final product. It took some special real characters to make this movie. I also had a BMX at the time and its interesting to note that the BMX used in the rehearsal isn't the same as the bike in the actual movie. Probably too expensive. It did look good, and of course I got a liitle envious, as I'd had to save all year and in America back then they had greater choice in products like Mongoose etc. Those used to cost $300

  • always knew he was from newark..DELAWARE...couldn't befrom NJ..with that shower halloween costume

  • john thanks for casting the mother and having her play her part like that!! I think she is the only real truthful mother in fim history! They never show a mother like this.... my mom was like this and allot of my friends mom's were like this! Usually mom's portrayed on film are mean assholes or just stupid, over protective or nosey! The karate kid is the only movie I can think of that shows this style of mom!! Which is most moms from the 70's & 80's.

  • This is why this movie is one the best ever.... you at the detail!! Most wouldnt film basically the whole movie in rehearsal! Amazing stuff!

  • If they were caught on tape, do you know if there are any plans to include them in some kind of Extended Version/Director's Cut or even to put them online as well? Would love to see them! Thank you again.

  • Thist ist just so awesome. For a Karate Kid fanatic like me it's just pure heaven. Thank you so much for sharing this, Mr. Avildsen.

One little question, can you tell me if some of the scenes that didn't make it into the final movie but are present here (like the cafeteria scene, Ali being molested, Daniel trying to convince his mother to sign the All Valley sheet etc.) were shot properly or were they cancelled before the proper shooting started?

  • @HurtigerHarald Canceled before shooting began. That's the value of rehearsing and shooting the rehearsal and cutting it together before you do it for real. Happy to know you enjoyed it.

  • Mr. Adildsen,

Thank you for posting this interesting video compilation of various rehearsal clips! Your production crew did a fantastic job in producing the Karate Kid movie. As with any film production, I am sure it involves a lot of hard work, some frustrations, retakes and more retakes and long hours to make the final finished production as perfect as possible. You had some awesome talent on the set to work with. I just purchased the Special Edition of Karate Kid. Enjoyed the commentaries!

  • So glad to come across this! Very awesome for a Karate Kid fan like me. Thanks for uploading these rehearsals :)

  • This is amazing, thank you. I'm watching the whole trilogy (again) today, just finished part 1.

  • "Afta! Afta, afta!"

    Wise words!

  • Is it you Mr. Avildsen? it's me Darryl. Have any outtakes from the tournament? Like the other points I scored that didn't make it into the final? Haha....

  • @darrylvidal1 Whoa!!! You were the actor who was in the semi final with Johnny? I wish I could move like you did in your tournament scenes, but I'm a sedentary person with a protruding belly, and I get a tad out of breath just going up a flight of stairs. Woe is me.

  • I love this....but, I wish all parts were cut together into one video.

  • @zanefielding I made a playlist and so did others, just type "karate kid rehearsal, playlist" into the youtube search, make sure to put a comma after the word rehearsal.

  • really boring withouth the kick ass soundtrack

  • @gouki2005 I'm in the process of editing together these clips with the music from the movie. Hopefully no one has a problem with me uploading it to youtube.

  • @perkoff That'll be interesting to see. Lets just hope YouTube don't close your account if you do it.

  • Just saw these videos, this is really cool. Karate Kid is an awesome movie. Thanks for letting us see these.

  • This is better than the new Karate kid, can you just release this. lol

  • So why did Machinima link an over 1 year old clip as new? Oh well who cares. Love Karate Kid :D

  • I love you Elizabeth Sue I love you Elizabeth SueI love you Elizabeth SueI love you Elizabeth SueI love you Elizabeth SueI love you Elizabeth Sue

  • Stuff like this, that Avildsen himself can come here and post all this material is what makes You tube gold. Priceless.

  • Im amazed at how many people couldn't spell Avildsen right. Even being right there in the name of the poster.

  • Damn i can think of thousands of movies that i wish there were material such as this of.

  • Great script, great actors, great director, great movie : a great film that marked the history of cinema. A great film made with heart and respect that has marked the history of cinema .. I saw it when I was 14, I have fond memories and I showed it to my son .. . He loved it. Thank you Mr. Avildsen, Mr Maccio, Mr Morita and all who participated ... for sharing your art.

  • Mr. Avildson, I humbly submit for your serious consideration, that this entire "rehearsal movie" be included with any upcoming special edition blu-ray. The 30th anniversary of this film is coming up in 2014, so you have 2+ years to get Columbia on board and work out any legalities. Just a thought. Thank you for posting this!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this :D

  • Had no idea Johnny Lawrence could be even more douchey in green.

  • Wow, it's amazing how much of this is similar to the final film. The cinematography down to the blocking and performances. Thanks for the upload! I grew up on this film. Still holds up today.

  • I see this film was the original inspiration for the Matrix's green filter.

  • You're welcome, indeed. My pleasure.

  • This is like the best remake that isn't a remake. From a true fan of the original trilogy, thank you, Mr. Avildsen!

  • are they in the matrix?

  • One of Avildsens best films as well is "Lean On Me" The story of Joe Clark aka Bat-Man. (;

  • Who was the actress that plays Ali's mom?

  • in that video it doesnt looik like a movie but like in reality! :)

  • Does anybody know if this apartment complex is still around today?

  • @iceveiled According to the special edition DVD of the Karate Kid movie that I recently purchased where you can watch the movie with the commentary turned on with film director John Avildsen, writer Robert Mark Kamen and actors Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita making comments while the movie is playing and one of them made a comment that that apartment complex had been demolished. Kind of reminds me of an old apartment complex I lived at for a while in The South Bay area of Los Angeles!

  • Do you have the rehearsal for "LEAN ON ME" as well?

  • Film was relased in studio ??

  • I think my mind has been blown.

  • Thank you so much Advildsen for Rocky 1 and 5, The karate kid series and Inferno a.k.a Desert heat...

  • WITHOUT A DOUBT.

  • 4:29 lol were they passing a joint, I do not remember that from the movie

  • @GloomFate The joint part is in the movie.

  • Cannot belive how awesome this is!

  • John you were waaaay ahead of your time knowing all the way back with Rocky, Saturday Night Fever and other films to know to film behind the scenes stuff like this :) Thank you for posting this

  • Thanks for sharing. This is great stuff. Should have been on the dvd.

  • Mr. Avildsen, I can't tell you how great of you it is to share this with the world (but mostly me!). The Karate Kid helped me get through high school and live! I was a skinny, lanky guy (much like Ralph was, and still is!) and got picked on a lot. I was inspired to take a Karate class, and it gave me a lot of confidence to get through some tough times. It's still one of my favorite movies, and this make s me want to watch it again. Thanks for The Karate Kid, and thanks for sharing this!

  • Is this THE John G. Avildsen?? Wow! This is such a treat! I've never seen anything like this before...and for my favorite movie series ever! Thanks so much for uploading this!

  • daniel looks hot with those glass on jst saying:)

  • i think it's pretty impressive how when the fight starts between johnny and daniel, theey don't even lay a finger on each other, i saw how daniel punched johnny but his fist didn't even touch johnny's chin and johnny's punches didn't touch daniel so trying to control your physical emotions that's hard because you have to put yourslef in the real situation. these actors are good

  • at 6:46, ali falls down and lands on daniel wow... way to impress to a hot guy ali!

  • Very interesting. This shows how the actors worked as an ensemble.

Morita should have won the Oscar that year - his Miyagi is an iconic image and his character makes the movie. I had always thought one of the sequels should involve Miyagi dying and Daniel having to move on without him, to prove to himself that he was finally his own man.

I would also like to see the extended tournament fight between Daniel and Dutch. It's obvious in the film that their battle is cut short.

  • LOL! I love how the stand-ins doing the rehearsal with the actors is always some incredibly age-inappropriate guy in his thirties, forties or fifties. Sometimes it's even the wrong gender.

  • Unbelieveable. Thank you so much. I couldn't even have dreamed about watching this because it is just so unbelievable. Thank you and thank you again.

  • THIS IS AMAZING!!!!! YOU ARE THA MAN!!!!!

  • wow, this is great to see!

    where did you find this?

  • Any particular reason it's green

  • It's great when a director like Mr.Avildsen shares his home movies for the fans like this. His Rocky dvd did the same. Rocky 5 is still one if my favorites too. The family issues really worked for me. I watch KK3 often too. Not sure why some can be so critical of a movie when it's presented with great direction. Thanks for the upload.

  • I just wanted to know what way Ralph acted wen he was off set like wus he sorta the same as Daniel er wah but like wen his ma sneezed he laughed hahah that wasn't Daniel that wus Ralph Ahah I love yu soo much xoxoxo

  • This is awesome, thanks for posting this! One of my favorite movies ever!

  • Wow. This was great treat for any fan of Ralph. I had no idea and it's amazing how the the layout of the apartment living room and kitchen were all shot in a studio. Thank you Mr Avildsen for sharing this. I love you Ralph. This shows what a dedicated and hard worker you've always been. You're the greatest.

  • @70stacy UR WELCOME.

  • @70stacy studio ?? what u talking about ??

  • man, even in rehearsals Johnny is a cream puff.

  • Love it!

  • Love it, love it! Thanks for sharing this. :)

  • Ralph is so cute :)

  • thanks mr adildsen if you read this i am a martial arts instructor and this movie change my life i will forever be great full, william shelton.

  • @williamshelton44 UR WELCOME.

  • @avildsen1221 You love Caps, huh?

  • This is absolutely amazing. I had heard about the rehearsals shot on video so to finally see them is a real treat.

These videos are exactly what I have dreamed to see more of but though I never would (after seeing snippets on the DVD extras), thank you so much for taking time to upload them here in their entirety...I for one am ever grateful as you rarely get the chance to see how things come together like this.

Cannot wait to see the rest of this rehearsal piece especially...bring it on :)
