My first computer was a f*ing expensive Acer Aspire, the top of the top: 100Mhz !! till some weeks later they brought out 133Mhz !! That was really breaking the barrier. Going beyond 100Mhz was considered impossible. There wasn't any 1Ghz barrier to the best of my knowledge.
