1996´s Wild Mood Swing was the most disappointing album of the year. The record was full of shit except for Jupiter Crash.
Then Bloodflowers came but it was clearly an stupid effort to get back to roots but failed: the magic escaped when Porl Thompson and Boris Williams departed in 1993. Perry Bamonte was average and Jason Cooper a bad drummer.

I recently watched all KROQ concert and something must happen to jason as songs like Primary, A Forest, Jumping and Grinding Halt are really bad with a slow bad tempo to them. As others say it's probably Robert's decision which I really don't think it's the case.
I think under all new decisions about drums there is Robert: Jason had never used in the past eletric sound in push or others songs.I don't understand why they use because jason can does a good job without them.
ps: smud isn't a computer programm for drums. All the drums from 4:13 are done by jason
in fact he DID used "electric sounds" in Strange Attaction, Treasure, etc. what they DIDN'T use in the past are the horrible backing tapes with lots of percussions. Regarding smud: it's obvious he is a guy that helped jason in studio.
Jason didn't play all WMS (Treasure was played by Mrak Price for example)... remember that boris use also him backing percurssions in '80s (eletric & synthetic).
SMUD is robert SMith and keith UDdin registration setting done by all groups :D
Jason used a Roland octapad to play live many of the electronic percussions needed and that was OK since the studio version was full of them.
So according to your info, SMUD are TWO guys then. OK I failed to say it was just ONE guy.
The problem isn`t the use of technology but abusing of it. Boris never needed backing tapes as he played most of the percussions LIVE w/pads. Jason has all PRE-RECORDED along with horrible rhythmic patterns.
It´s worth to mention that the sound of his drums is -no doubt- the worst of any previous drummer of the band. I was reading many of the comments about how he enjoys hitting/bashing cymbals and I agree. I see it as one of his trademarks. No cymbal bashing=no Jason.
In 1995 he sounded better (his drums not his style) than today. The use of reverb was good and inherited from Boris but then gradually he lost it and with the studio albums became evident that the guy wasn´t prepared for the job.

Boris' album with the cure have more succes but all the song are slow with simple drums patterns (same riff of toms).. Jason's album have songs with a drums patters with more bauty more speed (Never in the Cure are fantastic, or Undernath is fantastic, Bloodflowers probably the best cure's song,Gone! a little example of jazz).But stop: Boris is the past.Jason the future
WHAT happened to The Cure?? they used to be a great band with great songs but this one is garbage!

I agree with the guys saying that Boris was the best drummer of The Cure and he needs to return to the band. A great drummer is Boris.
