  • I'm English, so it's not an Irish folk song, although I do perform a lot of Irish material in my repertoire. But the song does have an Irish connection in that the main tune is based on the chord sequence to an Irish air called the Banks of the Bann. The middle part of the tune is also based on the chord sequence of another traditional tune Jock O'Hazeldene which is a Scottish song. So you are part right.
