Though I don't live in Istanbul, I always get this song in my head when the Vineyard Ferry sails through the massive stone gates of my city's famed harbour. My much beloved New Bedford, Massachusetts, fortified fishing port of America.
@shadowchancellor, I don't blame u for the dislike. The decemberists r my ultimate fav band, but the first time I heard this song I really didn't like it...but it grows on you. Plus even if it doesn't grow on you, its your opinion and you don't deserve crap for it. you didn't diss the band, like some do, or say the song IS bad, you just stated ur opinion. I respect that.
I hate to be the one who comments on dislikes as it is cliche, but god, who would want to be the one person who dislikes this video? I suppose there is something to be said for a unique opinion.
Colin has SUCH a preoccupation with watery graves! "Summersong," "You'll Not Feel the Drowning," "Shanty for the Arethusa," "Mariner's Revenge Song," "Eli, the Barrow Boy," and basically the entire Hazards album.
@cardinalsinfeathers and don't forget the recurring theme of a daughter drowning in the water. I remember this best in "Bachelor to the bride" and Tarkio's "save yourself"
@cardinalsinfeathers Don't forget Oceanside. I'm sure there are many others we're not thinking of. But he manages to make it sound absolutely enchanting.
In support of @camalusthegodofwar , the name was officially changed in the 20's by Ataturk. So by relative views of recent, it was recent. However, variations Istambul and Constantinople were used interchangeably for hundreds of years, perhaps even into the Byzantine era. Personally it will always be Miklagaard to me.
Every time I see this video, I think it's going to be the Decemberists doing a cover of "Istnanbul (Not Constantinople)", and I'm always disappointed that they haven't done that.

@Janexcalibur Istanbul is an extremely recent change in naming, and it is still valid to call it Constantinople since they are the same city. It's just like how the actual name is Deutschland but everyone calls it Germany. So, get over yourself.
@camalusthegodofwar Wow, I think you are the one who needs to get over yourself! What I was referencing was the name of a famous song (see succeeding posts for further info). Geez.
@camalusthegodofwar Your grasp of history is tenuous at best. How would you describe recent? Constantinople, the capital city of the Byzantine Empire, the eastern half of the old Roman Empire, was conquered in 1453 by the Ottoman Turks, who changed the name to Istanbul. Nobody calls it Constantinople, just as you wouldn't call Mexico City Tenochtitlan. Also, Deutschland is German for Germany, whereas Germany is English for Deutschland. So, get over yourself and go to history class.
Almost makes me cry. So well done. <3

He sings like he's trying to pass a lung kazoo.
But not like his life depends on it, just that he'd rather not have one.
(Seriously though, I really like the song itself but can't stand the performance)
Awaiting swarm of downvotes because dissenting opinions are not allowed on YouTube.

@camalusthegodofwar Actually, 'Deutschland' is just 'Germany' in the German Language. 'Germany' is the English word for the country.
