She's refusing to understand him and is putting distance between herself and everyone else. Many people do this in real life, and have a strong sense of superiority. The aggression this false sense of oneself creates is I think what the writer is trying to get at in the film. It is used to put people in their place, by people who probably don't deserve it.
@atbee totally agree - satirical exaggeration of how people label a person "defective" in order to belittle them - but nothing is wrong with them. And he believes it about thimself just as we all do at times.
@1111BLAKE1111 Because the hook of the story is that office houses a portal that allows one to enter the mind of John Malkovich (playing himself) for 15 minutes at a time.
Mary Kay Place has made a great career out of playing weird parts in weird movies and shows. You should look on youtube for her in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman... weirdest show I've EVER seen.
"Yes, sir. Ghengis Khan Capone." What a bitch. I had a boss like that once. He thought it was really funny to pretend that I was mispronouncing words.
No, I think you're missing the point. Judging by the rest of the character's behavior in the movie, it's fair to say she just gets a kick out of it, and that she doesn't have a hearing problem.
I didn't think it was as good. I think the connection comes from the actual actors playing fictional characters of themselves. BJM was so clever and original... absolutely love it.
I get the impression the entire movie is about people who don't fully live their lives but rather try to keep low (and "low overhead") and maybe also try to live their dreams through other people like Hollywood stars such as John Malcovich, thinking that other people lives are more interesting than theirs. But as we see in the movie, John Malcovich's life is just as ordinary as anyone else's.
Glad the subtitles helped. I was actually testing out the subtitle settings and thought that this would be an ideal clip that could really use subtitles. Even in the same language.
I am 13 years old and I love this movie. If I was to try to watch this with anyone of my friends, they wouldn't get any points or humor in this movie which makes me a little upset.
@nyc11104 even funnier if you're undergrad is in Speech Pathology.

That's damn right.....it's a false consciousness we are not aware of...
The whole idea of 7and a half floor is symbolic, refering to a twisted world we live in.
We are made to believe things that arent true.....

People should see Adaptation after this one. It is as great as "Being John Malkovich"and they are conected in a way.

I think the 'speech impediement' represents
the excuses (sometimes imagined) that we give ourselves for not being "able" to seek out our dreams.
Makes sense?

I loved that movie. One of the best scenes by far...besides when Malkovich himself goes through the loophole.
