Sorry to say, but this version is so much better than the Stones - and the Stones are one of my all time favorite bands. The Montrose version is a masterpiece - the vocals are perfect on every level, in the emotion conveyed and the performance - arrangement is freakin' unbelievable, and the guitar work is couldn't have been better for the arrangement.

Instead of being on the,I think "Between the Buttons" album 1966, I can picture this version sitting nicely right between No Expectations and Let it Bleed had the Stones recorded it in like 1968-1970.
@frankty67 Much as I love the Stones I don't think they ever could have done this song this well. I know Mick Jagger could never put that much Soul into his voice.
@karlmoles65 As Much as I LIKE Sammy Hager and LOVE The Stones, I was mainly talking about the style/arrangement of the song being more 69/72 Stones. But NO way could they have done this better than Sammy and Ronnie. How their vision of how the song should be was just amazing. .Like people would redo Dylan songs.
@frankty67 I see what you're saying, and yeah if they'd done the song during the Sticky Fingers/Exile era it probably would have sounded more like this. Good call.
@karlmoles65 I play acoustic guitar and for 25 years Ive played this song by Montrose. When a Stones fan hears me play it they cant believe it.(Not that i'm a great player or anything). They're amazed and blown away on how I changed the song much better than the original.I eventually have to tell them the truth. Then they say "You mean Montrose, that heavy rock band from the 70s,no way dude".
@guitarkis49 I got my first copy on cassette long about 88, one of my grilfriend's brothers recommended me the debut and I fell in love with it, after that I tried to get every Montrose, and eventually Gamma and solo album Ronnie ever made. To this day this is still my favorite ballad Montrose ever did (Though my fave song overall is Rock Candy) I have an original vinyl of this I bought in the 90s now.
First time in thirty years I heard this song played on of all things public radio. along with the long version of morning dew by grateful dead. Glad I found this post. I love this song. To bad they don't play it on any station more.
On classic rock radio they play the same songs over and over. There are so many songs, like this one or Remember by Greg Kihn, or Look into the Future by pre Steve Perry Journey that are just as good as the songs that are played all the time, but they will never be heard by future generations because the playlists on these classic radio stations are so stuck on the hits.
@ls1959 Absolutely. They dont play songs like THIS because there ARE playlists. And program directors.
Used to be in the 60s,70s and even early 80s the DJs would play what they were in the mood to play.Their own record collections or if they were stoned, whatever,.etc.The stations trusted it to the DJs.The Stations have actually ruined great songs by playing them millions of times. But we're lucky. We can stick with You-Tube and our own record collections.Thank God!
@ls1959 Hold on there partner! I do 24/7 freeform online radio. I resemble that "never be heard" remark!! I spin hidden gems like this one among a wide variety of others @Surf City Sounds Plus.. As long as the wind is at our back, we'll stay on the bus!!. Thank for your support!!! :)!
If there's a better opening riff than "I Got The Fire", I haven't heard it.
Montrose will always remind me of my junior and senior year in high school...1973-74...Paper Money was blaring and sweet Michoacan smoke pouring out from every Chevy van and Trans-AM's 8 track player in the parking lot right before first bell.....good times.
@karlmoles65 It's funny, you would think with Sammy's subsequent solo/Van Halen success and exposure that this album would be more well known, yet it lingers in semi-obscurity. Tough to find on cd as well.
@CaptainBeyond72 I may be wrong, but I think the fact that Paper Money is so very different from the debut is a lot of what torpedoed the album, and Montrose career really. It's a shame really.
@karlmoles65 That's pretty much exactly what occurred. The stylistic change on Paper Money was not particularly well received by the public , there was interband turmoil in this period as well, and about 6 months later, Sammy was gone. I like Paper Money, but I can understand why fans of the debut were perplexed. Though I feel that Paper Money is probably closer to what Ronnie is by nature(somewhat jazz rock oriented) than the purely hard rock/early metal of the debut.
I tried to correct an error in my original post but the corrected post didn't stay up, so I'll do it again. As I said earlier, I am a big Stones fan but this cover version of Connection is superior to the original. Connection is one of those songs that has disappeared over the decades. It isn't a staple of classic rock radio, but for those who remember it or discover it, it remains a gem of a recording. Again thanks for posting.
@ls1959 Way back in 88 I had a girlfriend that was huge into The Beatles. She had noticed that I was into more Hard Rock sounds so she recommended me a brand her older brother had been into. That band was Montrose. I bought my first copy of their debut on cassette then in 88 and was instantly hooked. After that I had to get the rest of Montrose's albums. And that's when I discovered "Connection"
I was wondering if this song would ever be on Youtube. It's my favorite Montrose tune. I am a huge Stones fan and this is about the only cover of a Stones song that I find superior to the original. Great sound.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. Montrose RAWKS!!!! Thanks for posting it up.

Montroses' cover of this Rolling Stones song almost out Stones, The Stones.
This is how the Stones would of done this song if it had been written and recorded around 1969 to 1972.The Let it Bleed/Exile on Main Street era.
A laid back blues.
