Where are people like Ray Coniff, Alan Copeland, Roger Wagner, and Mitch Miller today, when people like me need them? (I know, a few of them are in heaven).
Johnny Carson is goofing off and making faces. Mitch is always turning 'round. ("Be Kind to Your Web-Footed Friends!") Bob McGrath was always a welcome face on "Sesame Street."
This show was filmed not videotaped, it was done in kinescope form in black & white, not color. Too bad, it doesn't have the NBC "Snake" logo at the end.
live entertainment TV shows, like "Sing along with Mitch" were frequently shown on TV during the 1960s.you's probably just about never see live entertainment TV shows, like "The Midnight Special","The Porter Wagoner Show","Sing along with Mitch","The Jackie Gleason Show","The Carol Burnett Show","The Dean martin Show""Hee-Haw",etc..,on broadcast TV,nowadays.oh well.who knows?they just might be on cable TV channesls like BYU-TV,RFD-TV,Arts & Entertainment TV,etc..!
What a wonderful show. I love how he told everyone to open their windows and let the neighbors sing along. Johnny Carson was being a jokester, as usual, too. I miss this kind of show.
RIP Mitch, you are missed, thank you for advising Johnny Mathis as you did, he took your adivce and look where he is now? Top Of The Heap! (Of course I firmly know he would have been anyway, there is no such thing as coincidence.) But this a goodbye to you Mitch and a huge thank you for the wonderful memories of "Sing Along With Mitch!"
But at the end there is another promo for the TV version of Mister Roberts which aired on NBC from September 1965 to April 1966, so I don't think this is from 1962.
Did not realize Johnny Carson was in this clip-very funny to see him lip-synchronize with the Chorus LOL...I know Mr. Carson had musical abilities (watched him play drums in his 60 Minutes interview-he idolized Buddy Rich). From Mitch Miller's smiles it appears this was a sort of gang appearance maybe to plug The Tonight Show also on NBC-priceless classic television...RIP Mitch Miller...
@Aboz Yes, he's cheating on the higher notes, but I think he's fine otherwise. And he's having fun, which is the point of the show! Remember him singing "Here's that Rainy Day" with Bette Midler on the penultimate episode of his show?!
Ever notice that half the radio stations today play "oldies" or 'classic rock"? This was the 'oldies' music of the 1960s and it got on TV every week, not just the radio. Did you see the commercials? Teens eating sloppy Joes. Advertisers knew that the buying audience was under 25 as well as their parents. Point being, this was cool it's day.
As one of the first generation of baby boomers to grow up in front of the television, watching this has been a wonderful trip into the past reminding me of my favorite TV shows and the memories I made with loved ones who died long ago. I wish there was a website of personal memories of the individuals who made up these large musical numbers who could dish on what it was like to produce a TV show like this at that time.My condolences to Mitch's family on the loss of this American icon. RIP

Without Mitch Miller, there would not have been a Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, or Guy Mitchell. Let us not forget the wonderful Leslie Uggams, whom he kept on the show, notwithstanding the days of legal segregation.
American Idol does not hold a candle to this. If you agree, raise your hand.
Thank You so much for the wonderful trip down memory lane just now:):):):):):) I remember i was about 8 or 9 when this show first aired. The folk's watched it every week reverently, and they along with my siblings and myself would all sing along with mitch. LOL Sure do miss these times ALOT, Was Johnny always one of mitch's singers??? That really suprised me!!! God Bless Ya Mitch:):):) Happy 99th!!! Birthday
@welder541 By this time Carson had become the host of the Tonight Show, so he was not making anonymous appearances on TV shows. Since both were on NBC, Carson's appearance was a plug for the Tonight program on the far more highly rated Sing Along with Mitch show. And being born in 1925, Carson was quite probably a fan of the songs Mitch featured.
@285643 Mitch Miller would always have a surprise guest in his all male chorus. When I was a kid, we used to be glued to the TV as the camera panned down the rows of singers. Some that I remember in addition to Johnny Carson were Wlly Cox, George Burns and William Bendix. Loved the show. Listen to Mitch Miller's Christmas album every Christmas season. It may seem corny to look at these old shows, but life and society were so much simpler with a loss less garbage.
This clip has brought back WONDERFUL childhood memories...I was 6 years old but I can remember the silhouette of Mitch Miller directing as the closing credits play as if it were yesterday-PRICELESS!! =)
I also had older parents so I appreciate this kind of music. I wasn't around when this aired on TV, but I'm sure my parents watched it! Thanks for posting!
This show was from April 23, 1966. During the closing credits NBC Sports announcer Bill Mazer tells about the upcoming fourth game of the Stanley Cup finals between Montreal and Detroit. Miller's show aired on Friday and the game was on Sunday. The Habs won 2-1.
Johnny Carson was in his first of many seasons on the Tonight Show, which was still filmed at 30 Rock in NYC on the same set as Saturday Night Live.I couldnt see Jay Leno,David Letterman or Conan do what Carson did.
Was it my imagination, or did I see a very young Johnny Carson in the Singalong Gang? Does anybody know if he was a guest or a regular performer with Mitch?
For K4m1k423K1d - well said! I remeber these shows and this was a more innocent time. My parents used to sing these together in harmony and with all of their friends.
I had an older parent as well. I just turned 23 and my brother is 19 and while talking tonight about our father who passed 8 years ago we remembered a few songs he used to sing to us. I typed in the lyrics I could remember and we've been finding video clips like these all over the internet. My father was born in 1940 meaning he was my age when this originally aired judging from a post below mine. Thank you so much for posting this. It doesn't just help people who can remember these first hand.
I'm 34 years old--but thankfully I grew up w/ older parents who had great taste in music. I use to play by my mom's cabinet stereo listening to mitch miller's greatest hits album. Bright Red Columbia record lol. I dug it out tonight to research the songs I remember from my childhood. The kids of today don't know what they're missing out on and I love my parents for educating me early on w/ great talent such as this here.
These aired in repeats in the Los Angeles area around the summer of 1970 on KHJ-TV Channel 9 ( now KCAL 9 ) and I distinctly remember seeing this segment with Johnny Carson "in living color"...and it's still fun to watch ( Mr. C seems to be having a great time, too ); FYI, there were other "Sing Along with Mitch" cameos...I remember Wally Cox singing "Margie."
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU For posting this!!! I even liked this stuff when I was a kid. My friends thought I was crazy, Unhip and uncool...It's not rock n roll.
I was looking at a "1965" calendar; the actual airdate (of this repeat) was APRIL 22, 1966, with Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals played on Sunday, APRIL 24th. My mistake, and apologies...
Johnny Carson indeed made a "gag appearance" at 3:29, probably to promote the fact that he had recently become host of "THE TONIGHT SHOW"- so this was probably telecast during the second season (1962-'63).
Okay, NOW I can tell you when this repeat originally aired- APRIL 23, 1966; the fourth game of the Stanley Cup Finals (as Bill Mazer mentioned at 8:57), between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadiens, was played on Sunday afternoon, April 25th [Montreal won the Cup in game six]. The episode of "MISTER ROBERTS" that followed "MITCH" at 9:30pm(et), as star Roger Smith notes at 9:16, was a repeat of "Rock-A-Bye Reluctant" [12/24/65].
I couldn't believe it when I saw Johnny Carson on here! After spending two hours watching old Carson videos on YouTube, I switched to Mitch Miller, and what to my wondering eyes should appear!?!
I was listening to the soundtrack of Mary Poppins on my mp3 player while cooking dinner, and when I decided to look up Sing Along With Mitch, what to my wondering eyes should appear!?!: Walt Disney's sponsorship, complete with a commercial for Mary Poppins!!
If you watch Parts 1-3 of this show you will realize it's from 1964 or possibly 1965 ("Mary Poppins" re-relese reference). Johnny Carson had been doing "Tonight" since he left "Who Do You Trust" in '62. Plus WDYT was on ABC. it's not a surprise that Johnny would do a cameo for Mitch since both SAWM and Tonight were based at NBC in New York back then.
Yep, at 4:11 - gave it all away. I'm assuming NBC star cameos occurred on this show without recognition? Always wanted to see an episode of this show. Thanks for the opportunity to see it, it really WAS as corny as I expected. That "echo chamber" is annoying after awhile, particularly when Mitch shouts...
@dentelTV2 You are correct it is Johnny Carson, anyone who was anyone back then in the 'industry' was on "Sing Along With Mitch." Likely you know this anyway.
Mitch had one of the greatest male choruses of all time! I grew up with SAWM, & we had the whole family sitting in frint of the TV, singing along!

Did some checking. That was Carson's FIRST time on NBC. Mitch show aired in April of 1962 (the hockey promo in credits pinpoints date)
Carson had just be announced to be the new host of TONIGHT and signed a 26 week contract - NBC extended it :)
