at the end of the day a great musician is someone who can WRITE good music. Anyone in the world, and I mean anyone can learn to be fast/technically good at an instrument but to be able to write songs like a band such as modest mouse... well you just can't learn/teach that. modest mouse are by far one of the most original bands around - especially their early albums - long drive, lonesome crowded west etc.

The best thing about Isaac is that his guitar style is so unique. It seems wild and all over the place, but he knows exactly what he's doing. His riffs always sound awkward, but he plays them with such feeling that they fit right into place. Such a refreshing change from the recent developments in shredding the fuck out of a guitar or hitting powerchords as hard as possible. His style can't be emulated, and for that he deserves greater respect.

brock is not an amazing guitar player at all. even a novice could read a tab and master a couple songs.

modest mouse isnt about technical musicianship. it isnt even focused on guitar. many songs have the melody on the bass.

it is about soothing simple lullaby riffs with veryyyy genuine lyrics.

take it for what it is!!! he couldnt achieve the ambiance of his songs by shredding through scaled or doing death metal triplets now could he?!?!?!

so what if he doesn't have rediculous guitar speed or shredding style? he writes absolutely beautiful music and he plays it in a style different than anyone i've ever seen. as a matter of fact, some of the beauty of the music is the gritty, ugly parts (i'm not contradicting myself) it's just that isaac seems to have an "i don't need to have a typical sound" attitude. isn't that why we all love modest mouse?

His guitar was "never in-tune" because of his customised way of playing a right-handed guitar. If you ask me, i'd say him improvising "75% of the time" is being creative. The reason i regard Hendrix a highly creative musician anyway is because of his studio work, where he achieved the impossible back then, not just him playing live. Which was amazing to see anyway.
