How to download YouTube videos using Safari

Tip: Hold Option key at the same time as double clicking, that will just download the file, rather than opening it in a new window. Many YouTube videos are mp4 so play in a new browser window when you double click them, holding Option (or Alt dep on keyboard) simply downloads the file.

I was not having any problem using this method upto like couple of days ago. But since then double-clicking the largest file opens a new Safari window and plays the video in the full window. No download. I've using another method: copying the URL on the newly opened window I'm pasting it to Quicktime player and then using "File=>Save as" function. It is a bit of pain, but at least it works.

I actually found out how to download it directly from Safari without any other hustle. You just have to press Option key while double clicking the largest file on Activity window. Hope it helps.

@crescent87 THANKYOU!! I was doing the activity window, biggest file for more than a year now and had no problem. Then i found this bookmarklet that made it even easier, just one click and it would download the video. but then, youtube made some changes last week that didn't let me download any videos at all as an mp4. I was using the Real Player to download them in flv format. thanks again! I'll let you know if and when they update that bookmarklet, if you want the link, it's on my channel.

@crescent87 Oh yea, I forgot, if you are doing the activity window method to download an mp4 you have to add &fmt=18 to the url to download it as a high quality mp4. And if you want to download a HD mp4 video, you just add &fmt=22 to the url. I hope this helps.

a neat trick, add &fmt=18 to the address bar and press enter to download a high quality video in mp4 format, no more converting is needed. just copy and paste the title of the video and you can do that with any youtube video wether it is a standard, HQ or HD video.

You can also download HD videos in HD mp4 format by adding &fmt=22 to the address bar and pressing enter.

It's a quicktime plugin. It runs in Quicktime, so you can still use it to edit, export, etc(QT pro). With Perian and Flip for mac you can play almost anything. I might remove VLC soon.

For HQ you must add the code to the url, for HD either way works.

and it is playable on Quicktime.

One other thing though. If you want a faster way to do it and you can stomach using Internet Explorer then download the free version of Realplayer. Once downloaded, open up Explorer and go to youtube and when you open a video, a box comes up at the top asking if you want to download the video. You might have to open up realplayer first and allow downloading but this is a fast way to download .flv files. Then just use VLC to play. That is if you can stand Explorer for just a little while.

you have to wait till the vids done loading then go to window and do what he does but look for something that ends with =2 and double click and it will download then go and download a free software called isquint and then just drag the file into isquint after opening isquint and then just hit start and then the video will load for like a min to 2 then it turns it into a movie file and then you can watch your videos on your computer and any ipod!!!! i swear this works

Hey prettynerizza - VLC is a free program. I use it because I got sick of Windows Media Player not being able to play WMV files because of some obscure codec error. I never could get it to work even after calling tech support so I downloaded VLC and have never gone back to Windows Media Player
