No, proteins are not 'alive' but DNA encodes the information to make proteins and nothing else. Its these proteins that maintain cellular functions such as using nutrients, reproduction, cell to cell communication, and basically everything the cell does.

What a fucking scam. Absolutly zero knowledge about anything comes out of this. Just a bunch of college nerd teams competing to see who can get the most at home suckers to power up their retarded animation bullshit. And even more pathetic is all the at home suckers actually believing their is some way helping to find a cure for cancer, what a bunch of assholes. I can only hope everyone involed gets AIDs and dies... after spreading it a bit of course...
The CPU viewer will actually show you what it's doing but it's so slow you won't even notice it. Take a screenshot then take another to compare after an hour or two folding.
If you're unable to get the GPU client working visit the F@H forums and they will help you out.
it's all bullshit. I know the bio-tech and pharmaceutical industry. stop contributing to global warming and get a job and stop trying to mooch free health care off my back
Some WUs are worth more than others. If your team mates are running the high performance clients (SMP/GPU) each of their units will tend to be worth more than the standard single core clients.
I just uninstalled F@H today. I have absolutely no idea how it got into my computer. It was slowing my computer down. Games that would normally run at 60+ FPS at high settings would run at 10-30 FPS at medium settings.
Maybe someone else installed it on your computer as a service. When it's installed as a service every time your computer starts up it will automatically load it up behind your back. You would have been able to open your task manager and shutdown the process anytime you wanted.
If you're worried that your CPU is processing stuff without you knowing, actively monitor it's usage with Process Explorer (by Sysinternals) or CoreTemp.
@Jishiro Of course, because running F@H consumes CPU or depending on the client, GPU Power which isnt available for other things. To play games, turn it off.

I still dont understand shit. Why are a bunch of nerds( no offence) running their pcs, competing and so on? Does the winning team get anything? Are they that greedy? If I fold, whatever it is, how does the anaasys work of my results?
Actually there's rare things that happen every seconds and it takes millions of computers to capture that moment. Scientists believe that a clue to curing cancer is in the moment.
agreed it takes time and effort to each protein folds thousands of times a second which is why a super computer wont cut it and they need our computers to help :)
string a bunch of mini computers together to perform algorithms? That's the philosophy behind this right? So you are more-less creating a "render farm" for stanford. I have to find out a way to use this for Maya 2009 :)
My basic (extreme basic) understanding is the molecules form with the parts connecting at very specific angles between them. It's a college level chemstry thing, so take chemistry in college and you'll learn about molecule connection angles. When the angle form different, things can happen. This is one of the reasons why desease occurs, and learning the whys will give us the tools to cure these deseases. Again, very basic idea. Some else will need to explain better...
i still dont know what the heck that guy is talking about, but proteins are the machines of your body that are small enough to do their work on really small things, like a sugar molecule for instance. the reason it can work on such small things is in its shape. A protein starts out as a strand and morphs into a useful shape. They are important to everything in your body. The only way we can understand the way they morph is with a lot of math. Computers can do the math real well.

I forgot to mention somethings since I needed to check it out myself. You need to click "Life with Playstation" in the network menu. You should be in a globe view. If you start this for the first time, then they should tell you the controls to change. But once your seeing the globe with the background music. Hold the Square Button [] and press down to enter into folding@home. g.l and thx for helping science.

If you are still confused about it, you can contact me and I can explain it to you if you would like. The project needs as many people as it can get.

I still dont understand shit. Why are a bunch of nerds( no offence) running their pcs, competing and so on? Does the winning team get anything? Are they that greedy? If I fold, whatever it is, how does the anaasys work of my results?
akonpierre 3 years ago
Have you ever competed just for fun? Doesnt seem like that.

HOW IS THIS GOING 2 HELP with cancer? computer making protein?
SPLITZRZR 3 years ago
it will let sientists get a better view on how protiens and stuff works and so they can get a better view on what cancer is and how it works
and as you know the first step toi finding a solution is findknowing what the problem is
yusthavinfun 3 years ago
Actually there's rare things that happen every seconds and it takes millions of computers to capture that moment. Scientists believe that a clue to curing cancer is in the moment.
Kracg999 3 years ago 3
agreed it takes time and effort to each protein folds thousands of times a second which is why a super computer wont cut it and they need our computers to help :)

string a bunch of mini computers together to perform algorithms? That's the philosophy behind this right? So you are more-less creating a "render farm" for stanford. I have to find out a way to use this for Maya 2009 :)
naireland 3 years ago
That actually exists, it's called the Big and Ugly Rendering Project (BURP).
I believe it only supports Blender exports for now, but I imagine they'll support Maya at some point.
