The people who dislike this video are pro-war idiots who support Obama's borrowing money from China and spending billions in U.S. tax dollars to invade and brutally occupy sovereign nations in the middle east, creating more deficit, more enemies and acting as an imperialist Hitler type when the money should be spent to create new jobs and help our own people while bringing home the troops and putting them to work protecting Americans on U.S. soil. Ric Ocasek for President 2012
@veryrandombutterfly You're obviously a pro-war liberal ObamaBush supporter with no sense of humor. You'd rather spend billions in U.S. tax dollars to invade sovereign nations and police the world, instead of using the money to help our own people here in America by creating new jobs, healing our weak economy and rebuilding our decaying infrastructure. You support these wars, which bankrupt America, because CNN, the CSI TV Show or Fox News tells you unconstitutional wars are good.
@veryrandombutterfly Sorry we got off to a bad start. We both have one thing in common; we like The Cars. We could have a great marriage just like Carol and Ron. I played an Oompa Loompa in the Charlie & The Chocolate Factory remake. I really like The Cars, Ric Ocasek, Ben Orr and related music such as The Records/John Wicks, The Paul Collins Beat, The Nerves and The Only Ones.
This was the song that hooked me on The Cars. It was winter of 1979, I was a junior in high school, and I had zero exposure to rock music at the time. It was loaded in our jukebox at school, and though I never put the first quarter in it, I used to get so pumped when this song played.
good song, whatever version, I have to agree with Korban3. The album art not only drew attention to the LP in the record store and helped sell even terrible records, It was an art form. I miss Lp's. Thank's I'm going to go watch Andy Griffith on my 13 inch black and white TV.
@TheMajorHawke Ben's voice was always deep, check out songs This Could be Love, Double Trouble, Don't tell me No... All Great Great Great Ben Orr songs. His voice was entrancing....
@Grimgrimmerson I like Ric alot but Ben is unmistakeable... Honest Mistake Grim but>>>> there is no way you can miss the best lead vocalist of all time right here ----- Ben Orr...
Heartbeat City is one of the best songs yes. However those drum machines annoy me more now than in past. All drum machines annoy me now. They should be banned. When I was a teen tyke I too could not tell the difference between Ric and Ben's voice....but listen close and you'll notice, if it's melodic, it's Ben, if it's goofy, it's Ric - granted Ric is the genius who wrote the songs!
Ben and Ric sound the same to the non experienced ear. Ben's voice slightly richer, thicker and better. However, Ric wrote almost the entire catalog. Great hearing this early arrangement. To new Cars fans, indulge in the first three albums: THE CARS, CANDY-DO, and PANORAMA.....then if you want more continue with the others. The first three are premo!
@toddscotlandmusic I believe that the first you have to hear is "Heartbeat City", but that's just me :) It doesn't really have the true Cars' style, but it's the BEST. To me, of course.
I'm not a hardcore Cars fan or anything, so I didn't really notice the differences... very subtle I guess. Did Ben Orr really sing this song? Sounds like Ric
Yep. I only knew of "Heartbeat City" at first, my dad was listening to only it, and he didn't like and even didn't know other 'Cars stuff, hence "you might think" and "drive" were in highest charts... I didn't even know anything about Ben or anybody besides Ric, all I knew that that album rocked and Ric was a guy with sunglasses and he was the singer, that's it. Only THEN i realized "why not check other 'Cars stuff? I KNOW they have something else" and here I am, really...
I can hear the subtle diferences...Ben isn't emphasinsing the last sylabols....was it Mutt Lange that made the change? Very interesting...WHERE did you get all this stuff. I do remember the early version of "Candy-O" with the line "Candy-O...I guess you know" which was on several early bootlegs,,,and I think that Mutt Lange also nixed that in the studio. Facinating stuff, man!
Interesting--not really all that different from the version that made the final US release and got all the airplay. It's clearly the same song, same melody and lyrics, but an alternate take or early take. Could even be from the same sessions that yielded the final take for the American release. The mix is also different. Ric Ocasek's vocals are mixed down some instead of pushed to the forefront, and less forcefully inflected. The instrumental bed's also stripped down a little,
Benjamin Orr sings the vocals on this song. He tends to mimic Ric's style on Car's songs and it makes them hard to tell apart sometimes. This sounds like some of the actual album tracks in the mix, but Orr's voice sounds very tired on this take and obviously wasn't the one used in the final mix
Very interesting to hear this other version. It's a bit disconcerting, too, for those of us who know the "real" version so well. His inflections, and even some of the melody, are so different that it's a bit off-putting. Of course, I like the version I'm used to...but it's great to hear this one because, in some ways, it's like hearing it for the first time. : )
Absolutely love this!! Can't believe I've been a Cars fan all this time and never heard this version before. Anyone out there no if this is available somewhere to download or purchase a copy?
