@DiVeronica O how beautiful it is to be in Paradise Where life is always a party and full of smiles Seeing God's face unveiled O how beautiful it is to be in Paradise. O how horrible to be here in Hell Where one lives always crying and in eternal flames With no hope of ever seeing God O how horrible to be here in Hell. There no ice, no wind, no heat reign Since the weather is always temperate One sees no rain, no storm, no lightning, Since the sky there is always serene.

No wonder compsers in the Baroque wrote for the Lute as a Basso. Such a deep resonating sound brings a underlying continuo line to LIFE. I beleive the Theorbe is a Lute technichly.
That this was L'arpegfgiata's first foray into the USA speaks to how much work we need to do to catch up to our European friends and relatives in terms of appreciating music of the rinascimento, and baroque. Splendidi ! Meravigliosi! Superbi ! Straordinari! Bravi !
I went to see L'arpeggiata and Philippe Jaroussky last night at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. Che vi posso dire? What can I say? It was unbelievable. The transformative concept of Christina Pluhar's brilliant transcriptions to expand the boundaries of monody through the genius of Monteverdi and his contemporaries by bringing jazz influenced chromaticisms, melismas, and riffing to this wonderful music made it a joyous, coruscating, transcendent experience.
I went to see Philippe Jaroussky in Guanajuato, I talk a little with him, and e is so kind and amazing, his voice is extraordinary!, I really enjoy the concert... I hope to see him again...I´m so happy
´m going to see this show in the Cervatino Fest in Guanajuato!. I´m soooo exited about it!... it´s great... despide I don´t understand what they are singing it´s beatiful!

Philippe darling. You look gay and very hot. Brava! True French diva. Your full sexy lips and soft hands look like a true woman's too. Your sensual singing drives me crazy as a man. You give me goosebumps. I wanna make love with you and marry you. Are you interested?
Jaroussky rocks!!! He has such a pure voice. No one like him is able to bring back to life the glory of all the wonderful ancient music of Italy, France and all of Europe.
This passacaglia was one of the biggest hits of ca. 1650 and exists in versions by Rossi and others. In fact it was recorded on the label l'Arpeggiata started recording on in a solo version for tenor voice, if I recall correctly. It may be "Anonymous" here, but in most cases, this passacaglia was composed upon by the best composers of the age.
Dear pollino71, what you are saying denotes a scarce sensibility and, at the same time, an exceptional intelligence. I cannot disagree what you affirms: with few words you clearly expressed the essence or, better, the quintessence of this wonderful piece. As far as your question is concerned, I think that only another interpretation exists. The ensamble is Tragicomedia and the name of CD is: Vanitas vanitatum - Rome 1650 (by Warner Classics Das Alte Werk 2564698546).
Oh and does anyone know if this is available on DVD? I can't seem to find this particular performance although there is a similar one on the Teatro d'Amore CD.
@LordXsi The piece is from the 1657 collection Canzonette Spirituali e Morali, a book of anonymous pieces for 1, 2 & 3 voices in alfabeto tablature. I don't know if a modern edition exists.
"amazing", i always read "amazing", but what about amazON? can not find any dvd of this evening. MUST HAVE! saw him yesterday in cgn. amazing, indeed...
There, no ice, no wind, no heat, the weather is warm at every hour No rain, no storm, no lighting, the sky you see is always sunny. There, fire and ice, what a surprise, gelates, storms and a great heat in the same place all kinds of bad weather stay they hurry to that place, what a pain. You will have just all you want and what you don't, you won't have, and this is, oh my Muse, what I could tell, but now I can't tell more and I'll stop my song.
Dear AuroraOnVenice, I don't agree with you, Jaroussky as no French accent at all (at least in this performance) and I can understand the greater part of the words. But yes like at the Opera you need to help yourself with a Libretto
It's common for operatic singers to not be intelligible whilst singing usually due to vowel substitution and softening of consonants to better facilitate the singing itself. I've noticed that now-a-days there is usually a screen or ticker scrolling the lyrics as they sing them so that people understand what's going on/being said. : )
Wether it is a "ciaccona" or a "cacciata", it does not matter. The melody is lovely. I do wish I could get a libretto. Because it is impossible to understand the Italian.
If you go to this site, you can find the lyrics on the screen, as the music is played. Further, some commentator has kindly put an English version as well.
I'll make a point about the rythm "ciaccona". The origin of this rythm is in America, there are some doubts if from the Caribean region/Viceroyalty of Nueva España (actual Mexico, Guatemala, etc) or if it was originated in the Viceroyalty of Peru (Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador).
Anyway, this rythm was brought to Europe by the Spaniards and from Spain was spread to the rest of Europe. So it's not italian at all.
it's ciaccona no cacciata Scardan! ciaccona is a rithmic armonic melodic italian model ,typic of 16°century! as the passacaglia, another italian tipical model of the same century!!!
it's ciaccona no cacciata Scardan! ciaccona is a rithmic armonic melodic italian model ,typic of 16°century! as the passacaglia, another italian tipical model of the same century!!!
Because they know how essential is the resonance for the early music: there is a lot of music specifically composed for being played in places with resonance.
(1) Paradiso: Oh! how good is to be, and to be in Paradise, where you can live always in fest and laughs, Being the sight revealed by GOD Oh! how good is to be, and to be in Paradise. Inferno: Alas! how horrible is to be, to be in Hell. Where you live crying and in eternal fire, without seeing GOD eternally. Alas! Alas! How horrible is to be down there in Hell.

Fire and ice are here, o how astonishing
Frost, tempest, and the worst pain
Are all in one place; all excesses
Collect down here, o what misery.
You will have everything here that you want
And what you don’t want you won’t have
And this is all, o Muse, that I can say
Therefor I will stop this song here.

O che bel stare è stare in Paradiso
Dove si vive sempre in fest'e riso
Vedendosi di Dio svelato il viso
O che bel stare è star in Paradiso.
Ohimè che orribil star qui nell'inferno
Ove si vive in pianto e foco eterno
Senza veder mai Dio in sempiterno

anyway I must tell that Jaroussky hasn't a clear pronunciation of Italian. I'm from Venice but I don't understand nothing without the lyrics
AuroraOnVenice 2 years ago
I think that one day, you'll go to the Paradiso if you translate a few verses more :
"Quel ch'aborrisce qua, là tutto havrai
Quel te diletta e piace mai havrai
E pieno d'ogni male tu sarai
Dispera tu d'uscirne mai, mai, mai!"
It isn't suprise that Frenchman has problem with clear pronunciation of Italian.
Often it's annoying and inconvenient when they try to pronounce Latin too.
petrusn 2 years ago
whooops!
"What you hate here, you'll have there,
what you like, you won't have, never,
you will full of every kind of pain,
cry 'cause you will never escape, never, never!"
There are French people with a good pronunciation, Jaroussky maybe thinks more to the music.

1) O che bel stare è stare in Paradiso
Dove si vive sempre in fest'e riso
Vedendosi di Dio svelato il viso
O che bel stare è star in Paradiso.
2) Ohimè che orribil star qui nell'inferno
Ove si vive in pianto e foco eterno
Senza veder mai Dio in sempiterno

2) Quel ch'aborrisce qua, là tutto havrai Quel te diletta e piace mai havrai
E pieno d'ogni male tu sarai
Dispera tu d'uscirne mai, mai, mai!

It is "cacciata" i.e. "beig thrown away", not "ciaccona" that means nothing. :-)
scardan123 2 years ago
No, it is ciaccona a musical form tipical of 17th and 18th century. Also Bach wrote a famous ciaccona for violin.

Beautiful. There's like too much resonance, isn't there? I've noticed this in several recordings by Arpeggiata, don't know why.
Signifer82 2 years ago
Because they know how essential is the resonance for the early music: there is a lot of music specifically composed for being played in places with resonance.

Je ne vois pas le rapport.
I'm a convinced atheist and I can appreciate this music, though.
You have to distinguish between form and substance. Don't be so narrow- minded.
