I think Island DefJam is not organizationally equipped to promote iconic musical vocal recording artists. Mariah has the most #1 records in history, and is the biggest selling female recording artist. There's no one bigger than her in this line of entertainment alive! She could still stick with Universal and gain all she needs from their world wide organizational distribution structure w/o DefJam. She clearly knows this! She could create her own label! She must stay out of loyalty, not money!
@MrEricrockinout I don't know about that, but Lady Gaga's duet was promoted aggressively in the British media. Mariah has a distribution agreement with Mercury records in the UK. However, Mercury are a B grade, weak label. The only time Mariah got any significant aggressive airplay in the UK was when she was signed to Virgin records, EMI/Virgin did have a strong positioning in the UK market. I can't wait till she comes under the umbrella of Sony Music Entertainment! She'll release her old songs!

Tony Bennett is a class act, as always. The man's skill only gets better with age. While I love MC, I don't enjoy her take on this great little song. Really wish she'd have done it in a fuller register, with much more clarity and focus.

At first I wasn't crazy about the song, but it's growing in on me after hearing it a number of times. Yes, she does sound different, but that's because this type of song requires a certain type of singing. You can hear this if you listen to the clips of the other female singers on this album; they all sing with a similar style which matches Tony. This is very much in the same vein as "Subtle Invitation" or "It's a Wrap"
she wishers a lot, but that don't mean her voice is gone, she's just added something to her voice...started slightly in the "Daydream" era, and was more clear in "Butterfly". but the thing is she voice chained from 2007-2009. it got a bit better in 2010, and think that now that she has rested if she wanted to belt again she could. but i agree with her belting and can be very boring at times, and it makes you tired. don't mean its not there but i totally understand why she don't always belt.

@pleaseSTFUnow This is not "whispering". Her natural singing voice is AIRY, caused by incomplete closure of the vocal folds (due to nodules). The whisper voice is the same thing, she is just singing LOWER. At the beginning of her career she did the airy voice but higher.

I don't what has happened...but ever since the Christmas album it's like Mariah has a switch on her she can turn off and on. The Chest voice sounds as powerful as 1990, I can't describe how excited I get when I hear her music for the very first time (i.e. first listen)! I also agree with the previous comments about her whispering vocals, they sounds more substantial ie can't let go from the second album. I like everyone else can't wait to hear how she will sound on her next album! I love Mariah!

But a lot of it has to do with the poor song choice. When you have someone like Mariah in the studio, why on earth won't you give her a good song to sing? @Dam112 Definitely! There's nothing wrong with Mariah's vocals, I'm not saying that. She sounds incredible but I just don't think this was the right song for her, it doesn't do much for her to showcase her talent. But not every song has to be so in your face anyway. Is just that since they only recorded one song together they should have made a better choice. But it's done now and yes, we can start waiting for Mariah's next album which I know will be lush and amazing in every single way. :)

@Dam112 Yes, this is CHEST voice (modal register), not falsetto register. She is just pushing more air through the chords to create that airy voice. It becomes a whisper when she does in the lower notes (at the beginning of her career she did in the medium, "Can't Let Go" "Vanishing", etc). Falsetto is a register, with a specific mechanism. These notes are not produced by falsetto.
@pleaseSTFUnow I don't think she hates her vocals, it's just "vocal evolution", she wants to sing like this. In many ways she sings better than she did back when she started. I mean her notes are very controlled and perfected, if you know what I mean. Of course not everyone likes that. I adore her early work, it was more straightforward singing but now stylistically she's amazing and I'm a huge fan of her "whisper".

Mariah's voice is very well rested she sounds great. Remember this was recorded in february she was 7 months pregnant so really she did a phenomenal job. This is just the begining MC's voice is back in full force. I don't people are going to exspect what she has coming.
Well her voice has changed a bit. Giving birth tends to that to women. She sounds awesome, like always. Almost like her voice is restored to it's former glroy--no in a sense, it IS back to it's former glory. You go Mariah

@pleaseSTFUnow This is not "whispering". Her natural singing voice is AIRY, caused by incomplete closure of the vocal folds (due to nodules). The whisper voice is the same thing, she is just singing LOWER. At the beginning of her career she did the airy voice but higher.

I think this decision is made by the "business" people so that it attracts viewer in the opening, or to retain viewers until the end of the show. AHH I completely adore this woman.

I don't what has happened...but ever since the Christmas album it's like Mariah has a switch on her she can turn off and on. The Chest voice sounds as powerful as 1990, I can't describe how excited I get when I hear her music for the very first time (i.e. first listen)! I also agree with the previous comments about her whispering vocals, they sounds more substantial ie can't let go from the second album. I like everyone else can't wait to hear how she will sound on her next album! I love Mariah!

Mariah is amazing and so is Bennett but this song doesn't move me. I'm glad so many of you love it but I just don't think it does justice to Mariah. I was expecting something different, like in the style of Vanishing. But maybe the song has to grow on me. I can't wait for Mariah to release her new album!!!

@Dam112 I know but I was expecting this song to have the same kind of beautiful flowing vocals as Vanishing or The Wind have like very old school "just singing your heart out Mariah" vocals. But a lot of it has to do with the poor song choice. When you have someone like Mariah in the studio, why on earth won't you give her a good song to sing? I agree, there was hardly any climax at all which I was waiting for. I really wanted to love this song, I really did lol.

@Dam112 Definitely! There's nothing wrong with Mariah's vocals, I'm not saying that. She sounds incredible but I just don't think this was the right song for her, it doesn't do much for her to showcase her talent. But not every song has to be so in your face anyway. Is just that since they only recorded one song together they should have made a better choice. But it's done now and yes, we can start waiting for Mariah's next album which I know will be lush and amazing in every single way. :)

@MarilynFinland yes it is just falsetto, but her manipulation of the her texture to such a degree no mater how low or high she goes within that register I think definatley deserves its name ''whisper''.. not to forget its easily to distinguish what someone is talking about.
I do agree that not everysong needs an upper 5th belt or whistle etc. but I think this is perfect genre to really do that.. to bad (as you said) the song ijust wasnt right. but its nice.

@Dam112 Yes, this is CHEST voice (modal register), not falsetto register. She is just pushing more air through the chords to create that airy voice. It becomes a whisper when she does in the lower notes (at the beginning of her career she did in the medium, "Can't Let Go" "Vanishing", etc). Falsetto is a register, with a specific mechanism. These notes are not produced by falsetto.

@pleaseSTFUnow I don't think she hates her vocals, it's just "vocal evolution", she wants to sing like this. In many ways she sings better than she did back when she started. I mean her notes are very controlled and perfected, if you know what I mean. Of course not everyone likes that. I adore her early work, it was more straightforward singing but now stylistically she's amazing and I'm a huge fan of her "whisper".

Mariah's voice is very well rested she sounds great. Remember this was recorded in february she was 7 months pregnant so really she did a phenomenal job. This is just the begining MC's voice is back in full force. I don't people are going to exspect what she has coming.
