Thank you fro posting this. As much as I appreciate, admire and adore Shane this is one of my top 5 favorite Pogues songs. 91% Pogues 9% 3 Mustaphas 3! I think Hijaz played on The Girl from the Waddi Hammamat.
the day shane mcgowan leaves us all im drinkin till my liver leaps out and says what the fuck are ya doin..then ill drink another 24..peace an' cheers ya drunk fucks
Yes I know what you mean. That strong sorta-spinning peninsula beat. I've just had a look at the credits and I see Jim Fearnley plays accordion on that track - in fact on most of the album - that could be a factor in the sound.
I don't think I've read any of Rimbaud's poems before.
'As I was floating down unconcerned Rivers . . .'
What a gorgeous opening line that is. Thank you for introducing me to "The Drunken Boat". Tis quite a long poem. I'm gonna set aside a little time and savour that.
Yes, I know what you mean. I suppose, as well, it perhaps describes a post-traumatic stress disorder from the sailor's sometimes-harrowing times at sea:
That's the lyric that hit me the hardest in the song. There was a little pond past the cornfields where I used to go when things got really hellish at home. I had one of those little rowboats down there and I'd float around until the tears and pain subsided. Then I began to see the entire song as a metaphor for the mental illness I suffered int my twenties....
beautiful song

Am I mistaken or does this song have a kinda balkan charm over it?
Very nice song!

They missed the tone of the poem just a little.

I always felt this song was a metaphor for madness...at least it reflects my experiences with certain states of mind.

Yes, I know what you mean. I suppose, as well, it perhaps describes a post-traumatic stress disorder from the sailor's sometimes-harrowing times at sea:
"Now the only deck I'd want to walk
Are the stalks of corn beneath my feet
And the only sea I want to sail
Is the darkned pond in the scented dusk
Where a kid crouced full of sadness
Lets his boat go drifting out
Into the evening sun"

You're very welcome. As much as I love Shane MacGowan's vocals, the Pogues are such a awesome band with or without him
