  • Brent Mydland will always be rocks greatest keyboard player, period.

  • i cried. jerry headlight moment was beautiful was it not?

  • This music gets me so high!

  • That "wish I was a headlight" wass something special.

  • Jerry and Brent around 2:55 - priceless. Then Jerry tears it up like only he could. Miss than sound... RIP Jerry.

  • fantastic.

  • this and new years 87' were the Deads best shows.

Even though Jerry was the star, imagine the 80's without Brent.

    Impossible!

  • I love this time period for the dead. Theres just a full rich sound from years of improv coming through. Obviously nothing can compare to the early 70's shows but hey looks like Jerry is having fun :)

  • @cheshiresmiler The early 70s is my favorite, too, but without Brent... I don't know which I'd pick.

  • Great interpretation great piece, congratulations!!

    Martin

  • for those almost 5,000 viewers who watched part 1 but not part 2 i feel for you......

  • was there - they are my friends and heroes

  • A timeless jam.

  • GONNA MISS THEM WHEN THERE GONE...........R.I.P. Jerry and Brent

    Love Always,

    Paul

  • WOW nothing from my youth that I miss more than Dead Shows..........that was a weeks vacation in one night.

  • Great to see that Garcia smile

  • LOVE YOU JERRY!!!!

  • Miss that Jerry Grace.

  • jerry and brent made a great combo

  • Very nice! I've seen 40+ shows, most before '89 They all seem this good when your there. But we all know Jerry had his up's and downs, this is truly a stellar performance! Have you ever seen someone play a song with such enthusiasm who has been playing it for 20+ years? sssspooky when he looks at Brent at 3;03 and says :gonna miss me when I'm gone"

  • Sizzling! Thanks!

  • The version they played in Milwaukee in april 89 was even better.Luckily i was at both shows.

  • I was 4 haha, but I wish I could have beent there!!!!!

  • The thing that sets this band apart, is the simple concept of a good song, with the exposition of very complicated music in free fall transition. You can just get on-board and get taken for a cool ride. I just love the nostalgia elements they bring to music.

  • 89 was great Alpine valley 1986 overlooked, though, shame there is no video of

  • Over 20 years later and I'm still right there in the 20th row. That's an energy that knows no time or space. It might as well have happened yesterday. Thank you Jerry ! I'll love you and your music forever and always.

  • Fantastic! The Dead at their absolute best!

  • I miss Jerry!

  • by my self 30th row life was never the same

  • a great rider for sure

  • just found this -- great stuff! the boys are having a great time and the energy is tangible. Jerry's really reaching for it in the last jam, esp when he puts that lil extra distortion in his tone -- you can see the drummers nearly jumping outta their seats to rive the vibe ...reallly nice stuff. For my money the year from mid89-mid90 is some of the best Dead there is (right before Brent died, sadly.) Check out the ChinaCat-Rider from the last Greek show that same summer -- the Other One too .

  • @tripelb1 I was thinking the same thing as I watched the video. I liked the Brent Era very much. Brent was a great talent. He could sing, play and write music with the best of them. After Brent died, I feel the band started losing something. Jerry's habit was taking its toll, too. The Dead had that chemistry that no other band could touch, and never will.

  • chills....again.

  • Smokin hot !

  • makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up...

  • Jerry is Rider, and we miss him, now that he's gone. =(

  • Possibly the best version of Rider on the Tube

  • tight

  • They were on fire with this - Thanks for sharing , everyone

  • The whole thing worked on this - glad I had a chance to hear this. Thanks

  • 1:08 - 1:11 IS THE SWEETEST RIFT/LICK EVER -

  • LOVE it at 2:19. We all should smile like that all the time! Peace

  • Bobby got upity and Jerry smoked him.... Always a good time!

  • Brent

  • ah to be 21 again! last shows 4me then...i miss you rider

  • Wow!

  • holy crap do i miss jerry.

  • holy crap do I mess Brent

  • could not agree more with the comment made right below mine...this is one of my fav china cat/i know you riders i've heard... really just hits the soul

  • It was no doubt to me that Jerry followed so closely behind Brent, their connection was evident throughout all their years none so much as the last of Brents Days...what a loss

  • I love the way Jerry forgets to sing cause he was so into jamming. I miss you now since you've been gone.

  • always will miss ya jerry....RIP

  • Have you ever had any other band make love to your ears like they did,Whole body and soul ogasm

  • I'd been going to shows for years but this was the first time I was ever close to the stage. Two kids next to me were hitting whippets right as this set started and one of them looked at me with big eyes and asked, "Ever feel like you've been BOUNCED off the planet?!?" What a hoot.

Jerry was in such fine form this night; really smiling and grooving with the crowd. In all my years of concerts and the many bands, this one was pure bliss that I'll never forget. Really bounced off the planet.

  • Jerry looks at the crowd at 2:20 as he sings "I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train" and grins ...knowing the crowd was stoked. I love Jerry and the boys.

  • @Mr90717 Yeah OMG that sends chills down my back that is the best part I love jerrys little grins and smiles cuz he knows everyones gonna go crazy!

  • chilzzz

  • man listen to the piano player on the seconded i know you ryder it sounds so rocking cool / he has a hi pitched vocal talent

  • YO Csf finnaly someone who caught on......I did over 100 shows between 80 -83 (Overall I thinbk the best years....(I know I know 67' 72 73 77 ) anyhow I went back for more in 87 of course....the thing is is 83 and 87 we would plan the tours around what we would suspect would be relapses....like after a 2 month break...etc.....it worked everytime.....The man was my personal shaman....pure catalyst a freaking diamond machine.....golden yummies for the ultimate devotion.....NO WORDS

  • Jerry is smiling because thousands of people are getting off on the band and the band is getting off on the people. Great music has that universal ability to bring people together. Deadheads understand this and the world is better cuz of music dude, period.

  • It was twenty years ago today....Jerry taught the boys to play

  • Amazing!!! Jerry had the power to light up the entire arena with his smile.

Wonderful jam.....How great to see Jerry and Brent connect like that.

Where is the time machine? I want to book passage...

  • One of my favorite riders! The drums roll @ 2:19 gives me chills everytime. Long Live The Dead!

  • Downhill from Here

  • I'm tearing up...forgot how much I miss them.

  • honestly, I am too. Ohhh that was beautiful!

  • The Grateful Dead sure was firing on all cylinders this night. PEEP Garcia @ 2:10 mark....wow, excellent, excellent stuff. I really do feel sorry for people that just dont get it.

  • I was at this show at 20 years old. OHHHH the sh** we take for granted as kids. It rained most of the show, my seat was the edge of the last row of the pavillion, right under all of the run off from the rain. Very fond memories nonetheless!

  • this and part one might just be my favorite videos on youtube

  • Jerry owned tiger!

  • Hey Bro, is that Tiger or is it Wolf!!!

I do believe it is the latter

  • what a smile!

  • why does everyone diss on Bobby's shorts? He's got great legs!

  • Can I get this version on CD? Or is it Just on this DVD?

  • what dvd is it

  • Down Hill From Here

  • Man this is a Damn good version of Rider.

  • go jerry go

  • Tiger!!!

  • Where is this from? Is this from View from the Vault? The video was shot professionally. It is phenomenal. Jerry was so into Rider. Beautiful.

  • I'm fairly certain that it was from the GDP release "Downhill from Here."

  • you are correct

  • Brent added so much to I Know You Rider....I'd give my left arm (or at least a grilled cheese sandwich) to go back to this show....the good ole carefree days... :)

  • I wish I was a headlight on a north bound train...... completely awesome

  • Happy birthday, you old dead guy you!

    Roo the sincere

  • Awesome upload! Thanks!

  • yee haw

  • ...on a northbound FLIPPIN train!

  • lol u gotta love the little glances between jerry and brent around 2:56

  • ...it's like they knew we'd miss them.

  • WHERE can I obtain a copy of this video? I was at this show!!

  • That last jammin' break before the end of the number is just tremendous, JERRY IS SMOKIN', the music plays the band beautifully here.

  • I show I missed and I regret that to this day. Truly wonderful.

  • I felt a presence too once when I saw the dead in Dettoit. it was during estimated prophet. There was a pruple, dim light on Jerry. Amazing. I miss The Dead.

  • this has to be the best chinacat/rider there is

  • One of the best bands ever. If you like the grateful dead read Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead by Phil Lesh, the bassist.

  • 1:55 = vintage Garcia. Did the whole east coast and this is the night that changed me forever. There absolutely was "some presence on the stage with the band." I was 21 and would never be the same!

  • This whole second set took off like a wild fire. It really felt like their was a some presence on the stage with the band for this show.

  • I was there. One of the great late 80's shows

  • Kik ass!

    go dead.

  • north bound train literally gave me chills

  • Love it, thank you

  • Jerry didn't always try to out-scream Bobby during his "north-bound train" line, but it sure was fun when he did. It usually kicked the whole second set off into high gear.
