I love this time period for the dead. Theres just a full rich sound from years of improv coming through. Obviously nothing can compare to the early 70's shows but hey looks like Jerry is having fun :)
Very nice! I've seen 40+ shows, most before '89 They all seem this good when your there. But we all know Jerry had his up's and downs, this is truly a stellar performance! Have you ever seen someone play a song with such enthusiasm who has been playing it for 20+ years? sssspooky when he looks at Brent at 3;03 and says :gonna miss me when I'm gone"
The thing that sets this band apart, is the simple concept of a good song, with the exposition of very complicated music in free fall transition. You can just get on-board and get taken for a cool ride. I just love the nostalgia elements they bring to music.
Over 20 years later and I'm still right there in the 20th row. That's an energy that knows no time or space. It might as well have happened yesterday. Thank you Jerry ! I'll love you and your music forever and always.
just found this -- great stuff! the boys are having a great time and the energy is tangible. Jerry's really reaching for it in the last jam, esp when he puts that lil extra distortion in his tone -- you can see the drummers nearly jumping outta their seats to rive the vibe ...reallly nice stuff. For my money the year from mid89-mid90 is some of the best Dead there is (right before Brent died, sadly.) Check out the ChinaCat-Rider from the last Greek show that same summer -- the Other One too .
@tripelb1 I was thinking the same thing as I watched the video. I liked the Brent Era very much. Brent was a great talent. He could sing, play and write music with the best of them. After Brent died, I feel the band started losing something. Jerry's habit was taking its toll, too. The Dead had that chemistry that no other band could touch, and never will.
could not agree more with the comment made right below mine...this is one of my fav china cat/i know you riders i've heard... really just hits the soul
It was no doubt to me that Jerry followed so closely behind Brent, their connection was evident throughout all their years none so much as the last of Brents Days...what a loss
I'd been going to shows for years but this was the first time I was ever close to the stage. Two kids next to me were hitting whippets right as this set started and one of them looked at me with big eyes and asked, "Ever feel like you've been BOUNCED off the planet?!?" What a hoot.
Jerry was in such fine form this night; really smiling and grooving with the crowd. In all my years of concerts and the many bands, this one was pure bliss that I'll never forget. Really bounced off the planet.
Jerry looks at the crowd at 2:20 as he sings "I wish I was a headlight on a northbound train" and grins ...knowing the crowd was stoked. I love Jerry and the boys.
YO Csf finnaly someone who caught on......I did over 100 shows between 80 -83 (Overall I thinbk the best years....(I know I know 67' 72 73 77 ) anyhow I went back for more in 87 of course....the thing is is 83 and 87 we would plan the tours around what we would suspect would be relapses....like after a 2 month break...etc.....it worked everytime.....The man was my personal shaman....pure catalyst a freaking diamond machine.....golden yummies for the ultimate devotion.....NO WORDS
Jerry is smiling because thousands of people are getting off on the band and the band is getting off on the people. Great music has that universal ability to bring people together. Deadheads understand this and the world is better cuz of music dude, period.
The Grateful Dead sure was firing on all cylinders this night. PEEP Garcia @ 2:10 mark....wow, excellent, excellent stuff. I really do feel sorry for people that just dont get it.
I was at this show at 20 years old. OHHHH the sh** we take for granted as kids. It rained most of the show, my seat was the edge of the last row of the pavillion, right under all of the run off from the rain. Very fond memories nonetheless!
I always loved hearing the opening riffs of China Cat Sunflower, because I knew I Know You Rider would soon follow. God I miss that lil grey haired fellow. Thank you SO much for sharing this!
Brent added so much to I Know You Rider....I'd give my left arm (or at least a grilled cheese sandwich) to go back to this show....the good ole carefree days... :)
I felt a presence too once when I saw the dead in Dettoit. it was during estimated prophet. There was a pruple, dim light on Jerry. Amazing. I miss The Dead.
1:55 = vintage Garcia. Did the whole east coast and this is the night that changed me forever. There absolutely was "some presence on the stage with the band." I was 21 and would never be the same!

Brent Mydland will always be rocks greatest keyboard player, period.

Even though Jerry was the star, imagine the 80's without Brent.
