Surely, the US population now is able to afford its current system, the money is coming from the same population, it is not falling from the sky. So why have the government as an intermediary?

The US government introduction of price controls during WW2 with the subsequent introduction of employer-based insurance provides the rotten foundation on which the current system is built. You have obviously not been to a clinic of a county hospital. It makes the DMV look super efficient. I know, I've worked in two different ones, in two different time zones. For appointments, patients don't even get a time: patients are told to come "in the morning," or "come in the afternoon". If an appointment time is given, it is understood that it is fictitious, and patients most likely will spend the entire day waiting anyway.

FedEx, that the President likes to mention, is a private company. Obamacare will be more like USPS, which is OK. Government hospitals already do exist in the US, they serve a purpose: citizens and noncitizens without private insurance can go there and get care. The problem with Obamacare is that it will result in full nationalization of the system. The end result of Obamacare will be to get rid of FedEx and to be left only with USPS.
The solution is to get the government out of the health care business altogether, not to turn the whole system into a super large VA. I am a physician, and I readily admit that my revenues will go down if Medicare ceases to exist. But I think that's the only way to introduce some fiscal responsibility and transparency into this mess. The unnecessary tests will go away overnight. And I am convinced that a patient who actually pays his bill in cash is less likely to file a frivolous law suit.
You have to ask the right questions though, because "a universal system" elicits warm feelings but is an abstract notion at this point. Please ask your friends whether they think that waiting in line at the hospital, DMV style, is something that they want. Or go check out the clinic at government hospitals like Cook County Hospital in Chicago, or Santa Clara Valley in the Bay area.

I'm pretty annoyed about this. As a second year med student, i spend an obscene amount of time studying and stressing, and losing out on my 20's. I will work way more hours than most people, get sued, and pay off enormous loans. I do this because i want to help people, but i also want a stimulating, secure career with a generous salary. HIs plan only adds more complexity, without ameliorating problems. Maybe I should move to another country and work in a more efficent , less litigious system.

Sorry, i get frustrated. Mccain's plan was ...imcomplete, and if you compare what obama promised on his campaign website (lower malpractice costs, look it up), he is a liar. Well, listen to this. The patient comes 1st. The insurance company, and THE INEFFICIENT GOVERNMENT, should not come between what's best for the patient AS DETERMINED BY THEIR DOCTOR.
My experience with the VA system( the government) is that of extreme inefficiency.
My experience with insurance companies, efficiency but heartlessness.
Solution: tweek insurance company regulations( don't penalize sick patients).

Your plane ride could have paid for a family to live for at least a year, or perhaps a cancer treatment for a child, and given to docors who really do have the education and the right to be paid well for it. So maybe they will and can feel a bit less stressful about choosing the profession they chose because they care. I am not saying that it is theoretically impossible for the US government to run an efficient hospital system. But if past history is any indicator, it is unlikely. The US government introduction of price controls during WW2 with the subsequent introduction of employer-based insurance provides the rotten foundation on which the current system is built. You have obviously not been to a clinic of a county hospital. It makes the DMV look super efficient. I know, I've worked in two different ones, in two different time zones. For appointments, patients don't even get a time: patients are told to come "in the morning," or "come in the afternoon". If an appointment time is given, it is understood that it is fictitious, and patients most likely will spend the entire day waiting anyway.

I can agree with what your saying, but at the same time the government hospitals that exist have no funding, if the government does put forth a plan along these lines hed have a lot more money to fund the hospitals, and as far as running hospitals like the DMV.. i think thats a faulty comparison because healthcare has a time dependant nature which doesnt apply to the DMV so there would definately be a difference. FedEx, that the President likes to mention, is a private company. Obamacare will be more like USPS, which is OK. Government hospitals already do exist in the US, they serve a purpose: citizens and noncitizens without private insurance can go there and get care. The problem with Obamacare is that it will result in full nationalization of the system. The end result of Obamacare will be to get rid of FedEx and to be left only with USPS.

The solution is to get the government out of the health care business altogether, not to turn the whole system into a super large VA. I am a physician, and I readily admit that my revenues will go down if Medicare ceases to exist. But I think that's the only way to introduce some fiscal responsibility and transparency into this mess. The unnecessary tests will go away overnight. And I am convinced that a patient who actually pays his bill in cash is less likely to file a frivolous law suit.

You have to ask the right questions though, because "a universal system" elicits warm feelings but is an abstract notion at this point. Please ask your friends whether they think that waiting in line at the hospital, DMV style, is something that they want. Or go check out the clinic at government hospitals like Cook County Hospital in Chicago, or Santa Clara Valley in the Bay area.

I completely agree, i think the government should run the healthcare like they do utilities. They need to mandate that the insurance companies dont extort the prices to take advantage of what should be a necessity like water and electricity. But the problem with doing that is it becomes a huuge blow to the insurance companies directly. I think its important to see his disposition and realize that he has to make EVERYONE happy which is why it becomes so controversial

I'm pretty annoyed about this. As a second year med student, i spend an obscene amount of time studying and stressing, and losing out on my 20's. I will work way more hours than most people, get sued, and pay off enormous loans. I do this because i want to help people, but i also want a stimulating, secure career with a generous salary. HIs plan only adds more complexity, without ameliorating problems. Maybe I should move to another country and work in a more efficent , less litigious system.

Sorry, i get frustrated. Mccain's plan was ...imcomplete, and if you compare what obama promised on his campaign website (lower malpractice costs, look it up), he is a liar. I was drawn in by his pretty words, but i forgot he's a lawyer, and will look out for his friends. I think with a few well placed laws, he could "keep insurance companies honest," by enforcing the law, like government should, instead of driving us into debt with a new system that actually won't cover everyone.

This will save every employer at least 500 dollars per month per employee. Healthcare is a Right not a Privilege!

Trying to sell this to the AMA ????? Who does he think he's talking to.....the Media??? Look something has to be done to cover those that can affort to pay who cannot qualify for insurance because they are not part of a huge Group and have a pre-existing condition. The Poor already have health care (the emergency room) that all the insured pay for in addition to their own care. If YOU had no assets to lose....you'd go to the emergency room with the sniffles too and not pay the bill.

Obama's arrogance will be his undoing. Look at how condescending he is to these highly talented individuals. All of the rhetoric and hot air ain't gonna help you one iota when you're sick. When the highly intelligent and motivated individuals stop pursuing careers in medicine, perhaps the annointed one will raise his hands and heal us all. There is no question that this guy is really sick.
