Saw them in concert at Cleveland Stadium in 1980 with Bob Seger, Eddie Money and Def Leppard! A rock blowout for sure! Ah, that was back in the days when we could smoke and drink at concerts and nobody cared! Concerts these days sure are different!
I was lucky enough to see them at cobo hall detroit mid 1970s.Everyone was on their feet dancing.they were not like seeing a rock band.It was like going to a party. they were very loud.no body in cobo hall could sit still. I will never forget that night and i am over 50 years old now.long live j.geils band. j in detroit.
Had the original red vinyl many moons ago and wore grooves in that thing. This song is still so fresh to me. Where did house-party bands go. Put this on at a house party and we were dancin', laughin'; partying, getting laid. Defiitely the way to do it, nowadays i'm sure they have their own stuff, but give me J. Geils if I was ready to set the party on fire!
Memphis Train, 5 minute version, by Mr. Rufus Thomas, may he rest in peace, has been officially recognized as the song with the best groove on the planet. this song is good for a reggae cum r&b cum rock song with a decent groove. the instrumental jam needs some soul. and as for reggae, Johnny Nash wrote, recorded and released 'I Can See Clearly Now' in 1972 and it was a Billboard #1 song in the usa. I remember and i had the 45. so, i think the american public was ready for reggae in 1973.
@dugitomi That's all fine and great. Nash's "Clearly Now" can't be overlooked. Great classic. I would never deny that. But...seriously?! That song compared to this is ridiculous. This song blows that song out of the water. This song has so much more depth and directions than his. It's a million times more funky than that song. I don't care what you say. This song was definitely before it's time
@Princeboy99 i agree, Give It to Me is better than I Can See Clearly Now. i remember a radio edit which was around 4 minutes and cut the useless disorganized 'jam.' i was 13 and remember it well. it wasn't really ahead of anything. what do you remember from 1973? Fripp & Eno No Pussyfooting was ahead of the times. NY Dolls were the times. Allman Brothers' Mountain Jam w/Duane, RIP. a 33 min. masterpiece of direction, soul, purpose, and groove. Memphis Train w/Rufus Thomas, RIP, is a real groove.
@Princeboy99 you didn't understand my point. i was saying that Memphis Train by the late Rufus Thomas, may he rest in peace, has a real groove and sanctified soul and beats J Geils. Funk? Funk what? but seriously, where do you think 'funky' music started? if we can agree that funk is connected to R&B and R&B is connected to the blues, where do you think this music came from? The Charles River? No, it came from Mississippi Delta. You want funk? Listen to Charley (Charlie) Patton. He invented it.
I've loved this song since the day it was released, but if it wasn't as big a hit as it should have been I'd suspect it was because of its reggae groove.
oh yea the single sucks bum. this cut is soooooo good its scary. i luv it man the logical ext from the stones aerosmith yardbirds. magic dick salwitz get it bitch.
We had a jukebox at Higgins Jr HS in Peabody Mass-1972 we played this song constantly. Still can't believe the powers that were-allowed this and played the long version-I'm so glad I experienced that! I was finally in the right place at the right time. Anyone from Higgins remember the big rock across from the school? The train tracks? That's all I'm gonna say! Thanks for posting this!!!
This my favorite Geils song! And yes, the full version is a must!!!! The instrumentals are UNBELIEVABLE! I hate when they play the short version on the radio and cut you off just as the fun is starting!!!!
There's just too much to say about this music. Was there reggae in the U.S. before this? Not hardly. Has a man ever sung a more honest love song? I doubt it. "Why keep me cold when it's so warm inside? Come on Baby, your love is too good to hide." O YEAH!!! And then when the lyrics are done and they fire this mother into high gear, you know you're hearing something REAL. I love this song. In the 1970's, this was the record you played if you wanted to make a party happen.
I remember back in high school when WPLP 570 am would play this great tune! Lived in Tampa,Fla. back then-great memories associated with this song! Thank you for the upload! ED
Life long J. Geils Band I predate "Give it to Me"...Hell in little Monroe La. ...Live Full House was pumping out of everybody's 8 tracs in high school 1972 when that puppy was new..I was freshman...I had the LP and recorded cassette...Had Cassette player in my 1967 Volks Sedan with custom aircond....Cherry Red with Ice chest in bac,.....Hell I got the original Red Blood Vinyl Lp of "BLoodShot!!".
J.Geils is my all time favourite blues rockin band ever, wish they had of come to N.Z coz i would've been there in a heartbeat, but what surprises me is there's nothing on you tube from the album Hotline, Orange Driver, Believe in me, that whole 2nd side is killer from go to whoa, if anybody's got any clips of them performing that stuff i would love to hear it
@Doobie1975 Amen to that. The single version completely takes away ALL of the creative mastery of the great J. Geils Band! This version clearly shows just how amazing all of the members are on their respective instruments. They kick sooo much ass live in concert. This song is ALWAYS my favorite to see live!!!! Best party song ever!
Wonderful! Love this song :)) Thanks so much for the full version. I don't know why it wasn't coming up in the search results.. but we're connected now!! Awesome song from J. Geils! Going in my J. Geils playlist, thanks again Princeboy :))
@RoryNights No problem Rory! Sorry it takes me so long to get back people on here but I figured better late than never. Have you seen the Geils boys lately!? I just saw them in Boston at the end of August right on the Boston Harbor at the Bank of America Pavilion!! They were so good! As usual! And they played "I Do" and this was the first time I've seen "I Do" live! Seen them 4 times now and they never did "I Do" and that's one of my favorites by them!
Hi! seems we both take long getting back to people sometimes lol. I've not seen the band, but love their sound! Thats awesome you saw them in August wow! And 'I do!' yes, love that one too. I have a video for that one, nice to hear its one of your faves also. Great songs, from a great band :)
J Geils was a national band with a few big hits, so I knew who they were. I got the 8 track on sale no doubt. I shopped the cut outs and sales, and bought stuff on instinct. I got a lot of awesome stuff that way! we were paying 3 to 5 bucks for tapes back then. but don't freak, I only made 125 bucks a week, too. hahaha
thank you for posting this. I wore out my 8 track of Bloodshot in about 1974 and have been looking for this one cut ever since. It has been a very long wait, and the quality is excellent. thank you so very much.
@TheDonkeebob No problem my man! That's awesome that you had the album when it came out..I can only imagine how many minds that album (especially this track) blew when they first heard this!??!?!?! I wish I could have been there back then to see it too. I most likely would have discovered this album too because I have grown up in Boston my whole life and that is where these guys got their start. How did you hear about this group?
@TheDonkeebob I wore out about 10 cassettes of it in the 80s. I was floored by Geils from the start. Bloodshot is tied with Monkey Island for my fave Geils album. I still have the red vinyl.
