clearly, music made by thinking people for thinking people, but we can still feel it.... i get it now, it is not mine either...................from the review of: best of talking heads
I never understood this song for so many years but now I know, just like the song implies. It's about some guy getting all kinds of things in life throughout the years, but never realizing what he has and all these stuff is to enjoy once in a lifetime. What a great lyricist Byrne is.
still tickles me after all these years. incredible work, makes more sense after you've hit 40 actually. for parallel work see "rabbit in headlights" by unkle featuring thom yorke (they're both about enduring the waves and traffic collisions of life...shock over the passage of time versus out and out stubborn survival).
"once in a life time"...augenblick (the blink of an eye)...the moment of existential awakening that flashes through your mind-soul...forcing its delerious disorientation upon you ("How did I get here?")...no denial of change, but acceptance of change as an unchanging cycle ("Same as it ever was")
I was on a cave tour once and the guide started quietly singing the chorus to himself going through a drippy chamber - I said 'so THAT's what the song's about!'
Love this tune! There was a dance remix of it made in the early 90's, does anyone know who it was by & the name of it? Please help as it's doin my head in!!
Doesn't that mean you never liked the song, you just liked what it may have associated with before a movie paid off the label to use the song? (Yes, to use this song in the ad all they had to do was pay a fee to the label.)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. Malachi 3:16
i find myself watching this video...at 3:30 in the morning...and i ask myself..why..this is not my beautiful computer..in this beautiful house..next to this beautiful dog....same as it ever was..
I heard this song on the radio and for a short time didn't know the name of the song or sang it. After I found out who did it, I downloaded it and now it's my favorite song! David Byrne rules!
Love the transition at 0:17. I'm not entirely sure that qualifies as dancing but this is definitely one of the best music videos ever made. The lyrics are great too.
We all eventually FIND ourselves and realize life is short, time goes fast, friends are good and music resonates with all of us...peace and love friends...
the theme (or at least my interpretation) of the song is sort of similar to the movie american beauty...it's about a person (or persons) who haven't realized how plain their life is until now, and how horrible it is.
I disagree, actually I consider it to be the opposite. The movie Family Man actually used this song on their sound track, and if you watch the movie and listen to the song you find a direct correlation, and that is that the simplest things in life, like family and home, instead of money and power. A reawakening of your life and how much its worth. You should watch that movie it will help you get the song, or atleast what point I think their trying to make.
ermmm why don't you learn how to use the English language ..seems like you don't have a life ...lowlife ...your opinion is not worth anything as you present yourself as simply a lowlife ....YOU get a life ! ..grow up.
Huge fan since i was 10 back in 1978. My first concert was Talking Heads a few years later and it was AWESOME! They put on such a great show. They met and started in my state RI while attending RISD college in the early 70's. Not many bands can say they sold out Stadiums for multiple nights in a row but Talking Heads can! true Artists!
I can honestly say I shared a cigarette with David Byrne after his concert at the Enmore theatre in Sydney in 2006 - and he is the man - he is cooler than cool. I've been listening to the Heads since I was 14. Music doesn't get better than this.
saw david byrne on oct. 19, 2008 at the uptown theatre in kansas city, and it fucking rocked, then in his first encore he pulled out this massive copper plated guitar and the crowd errupted when he jammed out this tune, one of the best shows i have ever seen.
GOD!!!! id like to take this oppatunity to personally THANK YOU for allowing me to be in my teens early 20s in the 80s and experiance them best decade in human history shame then i didnt realise just how formative those years were but thank you thank you very much
TRULY ONCE IN A LIFETIME the music now really is THE SAME AS IT EVER WAS just AWESOME
you're welcome. Too bad you missed the 60's and 70s, as they were pretty groovy, and the 20s, I don't even know where to begin about that crazy decade. However, 2012 will be your last year to enjoy before I destroy the world.
