This idea, though pleasing, doesn't work for me. As I see it a person who is conscious has awareness of self as separate form the other. We speak of higher levels of consciousness where the individual may have awareness of unity and separateness simultaneously. Consciousness is an aspect of what it means to be human: having the ability to reflect, to make choices, to act. It seems likely that we achieve this awareness as our brain develops from infancy and we make sense of the world.
Then they would have to change the term valve, because a broken piece of valve would mean more input. It would be more like the piece of valve that is open and can close is broken. While removing the whole valve with damage the stream is complete explaining near death experiences and afterlife. I hope they find more evidence of this.
