Last year I drove from Chicago to L.A., and the day I drove westbound on I-70 through Colorado was the most nervewracking driving experience I can remember, albeit beautiful. Once I got through the mountains and started making my way into Utah it was a LOT more relaxing!
FYI: The rock slide that just closed the canyon March 8 2010 happened to the relatively small cliff face that can be seen from 5min 42sec to 5:47.... it kinda resembles a screaming face in the rocks straight ahead at 5:43. Pretty fractured looking even in this old vid.
Excellent Vid, thanks. Last time I drove this road, actually, my husband must have been driving because I do not remember the elevated lanes. I also travelled this route as a child, it's still beautiful but the road seems very different. I'm showing my age... when were the elevated roads built?
Completed in the mid-80s. I drove through in 1986 & some miles of the trip were made on old US-6 (gone now) and temporary roads while construction proceeded very close by in the canyon.
Actually construction was completed in the mid 90's. I used to guide rafts in the canyon in the early 90's and we routinely had to deal with construction.
wow awesome..whats average speed throught there...next summer planing on going from Connecticut to Pacific Ocean Cali. Ganna take 40 there and 70 back to take it southern route and northern...any other great spots on a east to west run? thanks and awesome vid..btw how do you make it 2x on comp?
During the summer time, I recommend the I-80 West because I-80 West is always closed during the winter time. You can only use it during the summer time. On you way back, try to use the I-15 E then I-70 E then I-80E. In this way, you are not going to see the same thing twice until you reach Nebraska!
It was breath taking experience during that trip in UTah! Try not to do it at night time!
Really NICE video. I traveled I70 for the first time in September of 2006. I left from Los Angeles and drove through LV and on to Denver. I70 truely is Amreica at its finest. Thank you so much for the vid man.....
Your welcome. This video was my first time on I-70. It was the highlight of my trip from San Diego to Minneapolis. In a few months, I'm driving from Minneapolis, MN to South Lake Tahoe, CA and I'm going to drive this segment of I-70 again. It's a hundred miles out of the way, but it's worth it.
I just pulled through there in the big truck pulling 38.900 lbs. Gross total weight 71,000. Fun ride through there. Much more fun when ya get to Vail and Eisenhower going east.

The speed limit on I-70 is 65-75 depending on the terrain , but in this video we were doing about 40, due to the road construction..
My favorite stretches of road:
I-70 from Denver to I-15 in Utah.
US-50 across Utah and Nevada. It has minimal traffic, perfect roads, and no truck allowed. And it leads you directly to paradise - Lake Tahoe.
I also like CA-89 from US-395, past Lake Tahoe and up to Mt. Shasta...Fantastic scenery.

Thank you!
No trucks...That is wonderful!
I passed by Lake Tahoe when I used the I-80E from SF Bay back to NYC!

The 2x was done with video editing software. Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.
Other favorite roads:
I-90 across Idaho and Montana.
Oregon coast highway
And the stretch of I-15 in the corner of Arizona.
When I'm on a road trip, I'm usually content with the scenery. If you're looking for fun places to stop, I can't help you.
Hope this helps.
