Epiphones state of the Art facility opened in 2002 in China and it blows Gibsons away. The Chinese are better luthiers than the USA this isn't even Argueble. And most of Epiphone China work force are from the USA from top management to some of the luthiers. There. From Epiphone and Gibson USA.
The Federal raid on Gibson is such an outrage. Gibson is an American icon. been looking at les paul traditionals in the uk, there is a shop doing it for me at £1399 after ive talked them down a bit, but the only one they hav is the one on display and one of the knobs are loose, the guy said he'd fix the knob tho bt cant order a new 1 in without cost. @70goldtop I have a Japanese Les Paul that absolutely slays any American Les Paul I have put it up against. Japan gets the best wood from every country and they have the highest manufacturing standards in the world. Gibson stopped being epic as soon as their CEO became a business man first, and a guitar enthusiast second.
I don't get why gibsons are so expensive. Sure having an innovative new guitar that tunes it's self for $1000 seems fair but having a guitar that does and sound the same as others but at a way way way much higher price seems stupid
@valdivia562 Okay, I'll bite: Give me an example of something that costs less than, but plays and sounds as good as a well-built and well-setup Les Paul Standard.
@mickcivic well a les paul standard is like $2,499. thats i high range. with tham money i could get a really good dave mustaine signature or a decent esp with emgs a floyd rose and a few pedals
@mickcivic I like the 'well-built and well-setup' clause you conveniently placed in your comment. No offense, really. I totally agree. The way I see it, if you want a guitar that plays consistently buy a Paul Reed Smith. Off the shelf there are NONE better. Unfortunately I don't like the way they sound. I work in the rough mill at Gibson and I can tell you that the quality has not gone down. Not because I like it there (all the negative comments on glass door are people from corporate, most people really like it ... except for all the overtime), but because it's true. Someone said it once and now everyone thinks it's the truth. I bought a Mahogany top Lester Classic a few years ago and I honestly wouldn't trade it for any Gibson I've ever played. No matter the year.
Yep, very unhappy, unstable work place. i know a few ex-employees..that is why the instrument quality is poor and no-one gives a crap. where can you but a good quality instrument for thousands of dollars?? where???? overseas?? betcha!!
To Gibson CEO and CMO...please, stop making crap guitars and get focused on your unique strenght: your classic guitar design, Les Paul, L5, SG, 355...put much more attention to instrument set up before sending to customer. Mr Paul Reed Smith can make it better than you nowadays...when his name will reach Gibson appeal, well, you will get in serious trouble
@llss882 But unfortunately his guitars don't have the same unique voice that a Gibson does. The PRS's are great, off the shelf are the best QC'd guitars out. They just don't sound right to me. It's a personal thing. They stay in tune, play great, look great.. I just don't get on with their tone. Sounds rather sterile to me.
I work at this plant in Nashville, and I love my job and Take pride in my work.. it is a great American made product... so EJROCKEY... u can suck it!!!
GIbson doesn't want you to see the finishing process because its not as marketed. The non-customs might have nitro finishes, but they aren't even close to historically accurate and they are way thicker and less resonant than a PRS poly coat. I love my LP, but my next one isn't being built by gibson :P
ha!. They wouldnt show us the paint but PRS will and PRS guitars have a much nicer finish that really brings out the top. Gibson is so stuck up i dont like em too much.
@gunsproof thats the vintage original specs, basically they make VOS guitars in the same exact way that they did back in the old days with the same vintage blueprints.
please for the love of god stop whinging about gibsons being over priced.. im a strong believer in "you get what you pay for". when you buy a gibson your buying the guitar, the sound, the authenticity, the look,a piece of all the history and (in my opinion) a piece of art and THAT is worth paying for!
All that work & they cant get decent fretwork. Even the Plek'd stuff comes in all the time for fret dresses. When you spend $4,500.00 the guitar should be flawless.

@TheCanadianToker1 Well.. it actually afects the sound. I've Played one. You can get a Kramer guitar (It's like a brand relative to Gibson or Something like that) For Half the price.

@acow88 yea right... they'll always be that expensive. and they won't getout of buisness xD. people are buying them all the time. i'm working part time and saving for a gibson double neck atm
@acow88 Nope. Has Harely Davidson? Those must be the biggest piece of garbage bikes I have EVER seen. They are still using the same technology from 1918... You would wonder, why dont people just buy Honda's, or BMW's?? They are much more reliable, and quiet! But do they? NOPE, why not? The same applys for Gibson, it is an American Icon. People will always buy them. No matter what!
@PaintedSidewalk I agree with your metaphor, but buying a Honda because its "quiet" made me chuckle. You buy Harleys with an intent to make them loud; thats why people put open drag pipes on them. But I'm sure the quality isn't as great as we'd all think; I totally agree with you on that.
@PaintedSidewalk you are incorrect regarding Harley Davidson. Most Iconic Motorcycle,Reliability same as or better than similar compitition,Honda for ex.and yamaha have copied the harley style in their larger machines, but fail to compete with Harley. There are Harleys around from the 1950's that are still owned by the original owner and still in excellent running condition.
@PaintedSidewalk running's got nothing to do with it. Ive seen cars from the 20's and 30's that are in ''excellent running condition''. excellent running condition's got nothing to do with reliability. Every one I know that owns a harely (regardless of what age the bike is) is constantly working on them. Sure they sound "cool"(to some people) but I dont want to buy a bike if am going to be working on it constantly, its a waste of time.
@acow88 there not going out of buisness because if you think about how much of the instrumentmarket they own, that and consider the fact that Gibson has a leigon and a half of people who wont play anything else
The holes are for weight relief. Not quite as much weight relief as a chambered guitar, but the weight relief holes are supposed to make the guitar sound better than a chambered one.
All ceo's suck! There isn't a happy factory worker anywhere. You don't have to think about why Gibson is one of the best guitars in the world-just play and listen.
the ceo sucks but id still buy a gibson because there great guitars, and besides the workers still make the guitars great and gibson is still a great company
and i quote"gibson would go from the worst place to work to the best if henry resigned" this proves the problem is just with the ceo not gibson
and how would not buying a gibson make the conditions better, the only reason that the workers put up with henry j is because they are proud of gibson and the guitars they build
I M So SAD TO KNOW ALL THE THINGS THAT GIBSON AND EPIPHONE DOES TO THE LES PAULS THOSE FUCKING HOLES!!!!!!!. I DONT WANT TO SEE WHATH DO THEY DO TO THE EXPLORERS FLYINGS ETC
Huh. They edited it to make it look like the workers actually like it there.
Don't believe me? Type "glass door gibson" into Google and click the first result. And spread the word.
But, of course, this is gonna get me a whole bunch of thumbs down from the wee little fanboys! Oh well. If you have any sense, you'll at least give the link a try before posting your argument ;)
Not only that, they've recently been busted for importing illegal Madagascan rosewood. Although, in all fairness, they might have been told it was legal, and were simply duped.
I don't know, but I still won't buy due to the ethics, and how the company is run. Give every guitarist you know that Glass Door link.
It's like the power plant in the Simpsons... evil corporation. The CEO even looks like Mr. Burns :P
I don't know myself, as I haven't really played a Gibson - but I have heard many times that other brands - notably Tokai - make better Les Pauls than Gibson do! I don't know until I try them out myself, but I've heard tons of times that the QC is been super shitty.
I've even heard that once or twice that a disgruntled employee or two intentionally damaged guitars while packing them!
OK, I read it. Sounds like a review of a LOT big companies in America these days. I would still buy Gibson because they are simply great instruments. How would not buying a Gibson help the rank and file? Are you kidding? You would kill the company and have everyone lose their jobs because of the CEO? Get real.
No problem! I don't have any beef with the guitars themselves - I played a few a couple of months ago... the '52 LP Goldtop reissue with trapeze tailpiece/P90s, plus the SG Classic, also with P90s, and I simply fell in love with them. They were very nicely built guitars, that sounded fucking awesome.
But my beef is with the managment, and how Henry seems hell-bent on ruining the company!!!
@EJRocky I agree - They make some AMAZING guitars. It's unfortunate that they don't treat the workers better. I would bet anything that if they treated the workers better the overall quality of their guitars would improve.
@EJRocky and not to mention the fact that the gibson gutars are all built incorrectly..
wrong scale of the neck and placement of the bridge makes it impossible to sound in tune all the way(and it doesnt matter what pricerange the guitar is in,it still will never sound in tune...)...and the dovetail fitting to the body is not good at all...the necks break like matches due to the way its made...ask any pro luthier and they can confirm this....;););)
@EJRocky i have owned 2 gibsons myself, 1 les paul and 1 explorer..both with very poor build quality, the neck of both didnt match the fretboard at all...and it never sounded in tune above the 12 fret due to the inproper scale lenght..
please people ckeck out the website of mr ed roman in las vegas and read everything in the rants section...keep in mind he has worked for gibson...he knows..and a few ex employees also have a thing or 2 to say about these "handcrafted" guitars...;););)
They could have just been boobs... every guitar company has a few bad ones. The Gibsons I personally played were exceptional. But I have heard of some QC issues, and I DEFINITELY agree that they are overpriced!
And about Ed - I will never listen to that dolt. The man is a straight up idiot. I agree that Gibson is a crappy company, but I'll never believe a thing that comes out of his mouth.
@EJRocky yeah the Ceo and corporate isnt so great but atleast the luthiers that work for this company actually care for the guitars right? maybe not the big dogs up stairs but hopefully for the guitars
Truth. I actually have played a few Gibsons, like a few months back, and they were extremely nice. In fact, I was annoyed I didn't have the cash to buy them! Two of the ones I played were the '52 Tribute LP Goldtop, and the SG Classic, both with P90s. Beautiful guitars.
Just a shame the company is utter shit. But the workers do seem to care about the product, which is good.
nobody freak out but i think that gibson is a little over rated. there are other manufacturers out there like dean and prs that dont get the recognition they deserve. just sayin
man i want to work there lol!!!

@acow88 yea right... they'll always be that expensive. and they won't getout of buisness xD. people are buying them all the time. i'm working part time and saving for a gibson double neck atm

@acow88 lmao, dont count on it

@acow88 do ya think? haha.. here in brazil gibsons cost 5000 dolars
joaogodooy 10 months ago
@acow88 Nope. Has Harely Davidson? Those must be the biggest piece of garbage bikes I have EVER seen. They are still using the same technology from 1918... You would wonder, why dont people just buy Honda's, or BMW's?? They are much more reliable, and quiet! But do they? NOPE, why not? The same applys for Gibson, it is an American Icon. People will always buy them. No matter what!
PaintedSidewalk 9 months ago 5
@PaintedSidewalk I agree with your metaphor, but buying a Honda because its "quiet" made me chuckle. You buy Harleys with an intent to make them loud; thats why people put open drag pipes on them. But I'm sure the quality isn't as great as we'd all think; I totally agree with you on that.
Raptorfy 6 months ago
@PaintedSidewalk you are incorrect regarding Harley Davidson. Most Iconic Motorcycle,Reliability same as or better than similar compitition,Honda for ex.and yamaha have copied the harley style in their larger machines, but fail to compete with Harley. There are Harleys around from the 1950's that are still owned by the original owner and still in excellent running condition.
starview1 4 months ago
@PaintedSidewalk running's got nothing to do with it. Ive seen cars from the 20's and 30's that are in ''excellent running condition''. excellent running condition's got nothing to do with reliability. Every one I know that owns a harely (regardless of what age the bike is) is constantly working on them. Sure they sound "cool"(to some people) but I dont want to buy a bike if am going to be working on it constantly, its a waste of time.
PaintedSidewalk 4 months ago
@acow88 there not going out of buisness because if you think about how much of the instrumentmarket they own, that and consider the fact that Gibson has a leigon and a half of people who wont play anything else
OdeToBlood24 9 months ago
The holes are for weight relief. Not quite as much weight relief as a chambered guitar, but the weight relief holes are supposed to make the guitar sound better than a chambered one.

JacobKingOfTheOzone 2 years ago
All ceo's suck! There isn't a happy factory worker anywhere. You don't have to think about why Gibson is one of the best guitars in the world-just play and listen.
skortarist 2 years ago 2
the ceo sucks but id still buy a gibson because there great guitars, and besides the workers still make the guitars great and gibson is still a great company
and i quote"gibson would go from the worst place to work to the best if henry resigned" this proves the problem is just with the ceo not gibson
and how would not buying a gibson make the conditions better, the only reason that the workers put up with henry j is because they are proud of gibson and the guitars they build

Huh. They edited it to make it look like the workers actually like it there.
Don't believe me? Type "glass door gibson" into Google and click the first result. And spread the word.
But, of course, this is gonna get me a whole bunch of thumbs down from the wee little fanboys! Oh well. If you have any sense, you'll at least give the link a try before posting your argument ;)

thumbs up,... finally an interesting coment
galgodromo 2 years ago
Cheers, mate. Spread the word!
Burns :P
Cheers man ;)
EJRocky 2 years ago
i read it and i agree that the ceo should resign but i quote from glassdoor
"the reason we stay is the guitars"
gibson is still a great company making great guitars they just have bad managment
again i quote"gibson would go from the worst place to work to the best if henry resigned
i dont understand how not buying a gibson would help the workers, their love of the guitars is what makes them sput up with henry
LesPaulRockerProduct 2 years ago
@EJRocky
the CEO sucks that's the problem but previous leaders have made the brand legendary and that will live on
Tassel0 2 years ago
i read that "glass door"---wow thats terrible----do you think gibson quality is good or not?
ssttee333 2 years ago
I don't know myself, as I haven't really played a Gibson - but I have heard many times that other brands - notably Tokai - make better Les Pauls than Gibson do! I don't know until I try them out myself, but I've heard tons of times that the QC is been super shitty.
I've even heard that once or twice that a disgruntled employee or two intentionally damaged guitars while packing them!
Thanks man, and tell every guitarist you know :)
EJRocky 2 years ago
OK, I read it. Sounds like a review of a LOT big companies in America these days. I would still buy Gibson because they are simply great instruments. How would not buying a Gibson help the rank and file? Are you kidding? You would kill the company and have everyone lose their jobs because of the CEO? Get real.
M1i2k3e4Z 2 years ago
@EJRocky wow that link was quite eye-opening thank-you.
davidcruz141 1 year ago
@davidcruz141
Cheers ;)
EJRocky 1 year ago
@EJRocky I agree - They make some AMAZING guitars. It's unfortunate that they don't treat the workers better. I would bet anything that if they treated the workers better the overall quality of their guitars would improve.

@EJRocky I would enjoy that job, probably get bored of it after like 5 years thought.
tkaczyk1995 1 year ago
@EJRocky and not to mention the fact that the gibson gutars are all built incorrectly..
wrong scale of the neck and placement of the bridge makes it impossible to sound in tune all the way(and it doesnt matter what pricerange the guitar is in,it still will never sound in tune...)...and the dovetail fitting to the body is not good at all...the necks break like matches due to the way its made...ask any pro luthier and they can confirm this....;););)
hebeddari 1 year ago
@hebeddari
Hmm. I have actually played a few, and to be quite honest, they were actually really nice instruments.
But I maintain - nice guitars, absolute SHIT company behind them.
EJRocky 1 year ago
@EJRocky i have owned 2 gibsons myself, 1 les paul and 1 explorer..both with very poor build quality, the neck of both didnt match the fretboard at all...and it never sounded in tune above the 12 fret due to the inproper scale lenght..
please people ckeck out the website of mr ed roman in las vegas and read everything in the rants section...keep in mind he has worked for gibson...he knows..and a few ex employees also have a thing or 2 to say about these "handcrafted" guitars...;););)
hansebeddari 1 year ago
@hansebeddari
EJRocky 1 year ago
@EJRocky yeah the Ceo and corporate isnt so great but atleast the luthiers that work for this company actually care for the guitars right? maybe not the big dogs up stairs but hopefully for the guitars
GS96Whiskey 1 year ago
@GS96Whiskey
