@TheZecritic it's amazingly simple really, i place them in bright light (out in partial shade all summer; inside under bright lights during winter), they sit in sopping wet sphagnum, and i spray them with a nozzle to mimic heavy rainfalls as often as i could. that's it... they feed themselves very well.
@PikachuCLS7 no, they still have flowers but the insects that visit and pollinate the flowers aren't usually attracted to the scent of the traps therefore don't often visit the traps to fall prey. if i'm not mistaken, there's a certain frequency of wing beats from certain flying creatures like bees that release pollen. they are specific in their pollination
@Piranhaboy01 well its pretty complicated here in the sunny days, day is hotter and cold is like 22 steps away from hot as day , in rainy days, day is 24 steps away from cold as night and night is 32 steps away from in near freezing in days like today i dont even need a fan! but for dengue and fly protecton, i need a fan.
@pepe10282002 by steps do you mean degrees?... if your day is 22 degrees warmer than night, you're laughing... these, and many other carnivorous plants will flourish. do you get temps near freezing in the Philippines??
@jaesong Yes, the pitcher plant has nectar on the lip so if an unfortunate hungry insect comes by *slip.* Also the design on the pitcher plant can attract insects as well.
people stop getting mad this plant in nature would still kill whether he was filming it or not sheesh this is the circle of life no said its was going to be fare
@Brainthang and humans can transfer aids, hiv, hepatitis, syphilis, and other worse things that leave you with worse than just bumps. So... stay out of life.
@Tr4cK17 And humans can prevent diseases and/or treat/cure diseases transferred by other humans. We can do the same with diseases transferred through mosquitos, but I think life would just be much better without having to go through the trouble. I appreciate being alive and I appreciate the existence of other humans (even though we've screwed up some things). So no, I will not "stay out of life." Pwned... Again.

gah i came to see bugs falling into their deaths and drowning -.- not watch them feed happily , that plant is acting likes its freggun christmas giveaway >:[
hey piranha boy? i just ordered the pitcher plant "dana's delight" or whatever and its mid fall and im afraid that it wont have enough time to root before the snow and freezing comes. i heard they just grow back in the spring but would it survive if its still adolecent? also in nebraska theres dramatic temerature shifts, could be 70 one day and 30 the next. anyways please help!
@bartman464 if you want you can buy a bright compact fluorescent or other bright light and grow it all winter long. then acclimate it in the spring and it'll then be fine outside
@GhostIntoTheFog i have to disagree. mosquitoes and other biting flies are the protectors of the wild lands. i work in the field and have been attacked by thousands at a time, cursing and swatting them but still appreciate the fact they keep many careless and littering people from spoiling the landscapes
@Piranhaboy01 LOL you really appreciate that. especially the fact that they keep you and everyone else from enjoying said landscape. mesquitoes are natures disease spreading 'pricks'
@GhostIntoTheFog Don't imagine it 's all that hard, probably should be some sort of large disc of a leaf or something with a fluid that looks and smells to the insects like water, then when the females go to lay their eggs they get trapped in it and get digested.
@GhostIntoTheFog i know its hard to hear this, but without mosquitoes there will be a chain reaction in a vary negative way. they are a big part of the food chain.
@YOUCANNOTDENY for some reason this plant is one of the easiest I have grown yet. it's surviving in a small bit of moss which i keep as wet as possible. i also spray the pitchers with clean water to mimic rainfall. during the summer it's growing outside until the fall makes me put it in my cool basement where it still gets a drowning..
@yuumeko definitely. fruit flies are attracted to the smell and slip easily into the trap. a large Drosera multifida, or staghorn sundew will also clean house.
@klaafamily these plants are ant specialists. if i put the plant on an ant nest, the traps get filled in one day so i only put it there for a couple hours to theoretically they will work BUT the plant will most likely not survive your kitchen environment
@klaafamily why don't you try a Nepenthes? most are large enough to devour hundreds of ants. i got an ant infestation last fall from a potted plant but the ants completely disappeared within about two months. there were ants in the hundred or so pitchers in my plants. (they even devoured my ladybug pest controls) :P
how do you keep it at highland conditions and sustain it's cool night time temp when indoors? I'm growing some neps and want to get cobra lilies and heliamphora, but can't figure an affordable way to guarantee night time drop...
yeah, but that is a bulky and highly expensive venture. If it is how he does it then i appreciate the answer, but If piranhaboy has another trick up his sleeve I'd love to hear it.
@maddcatone have you tried something like a disused water cooler? I was thinking of rigging one up to drip on the moss when i set up the greenhouse. that'll help your cobra and heliamphora but highland neps expect cool leaves
@Piranhaboy01 No, actually I hadn't thought of that. That's a great idea. I'll see what I can find at the bottling plant tomorrow! Cheers! Oh, and my night time temp drop has been a success, but we'll see how true that is this summer lol
@maddcatone i grow mine in the basement under 400 w high pressure sodium lamps where they warm up during the day and the temp always drops a bit, not quite highland but in the winter it gets damn chilly. it's working for my N. villosa and N. lowii very well. i also spray from above like a rainstorm every two days or more.
You obviously have no idea what you're on about. What's a few plants going to do compared to industrial application of insecticides and human development and pollution?
dude i soo need one 4 all the friggin flys that show up n other random annoying bugs that show up in my yard cause of our mint plants n neglected to cut (to ur knees) grass
One thing you should keep in mind though is that carnivorous plants are bug magnets. They give off scents that attract bugs for them to eat. They don't catch all of the bugs they attract.
whatever you do dont feed it every day, carniverous plants often overeat and die easily. I'd suggest buying a terrarium to help make sure your conditions are best for the plant (also only water with distilled water)
These plants are too small yet to catch a mouse, at least mine are. In the wild they may get large enough but they typically catch insects and other small animals only. Other than that, a mouse may decay whereas it becomes digested by the Nepenthes. It may be worth an experiment if mine gets large enough.
It's just over three years old now. They seem to get larger in pitcher size and diameter of plant. They form extensive clumps of tightly packed pitchers such that anything that falls into the space of the plant is caught.
The more i research and think about Heliamphoras, the more I want one so bad! They look like a very interesting type of Pitcher Plant. I'm gardening in the spring around Mothers' Day, would it be safe to plant any CP's in my garden or would it harm my plants? Nice video btw :)
You will need to put them in non-draining pots and keep them full of water. They have huge demands for water outside, particularly in the sun. They will grow outside all year long if it doesn't freeze. It can get cold. Mine have tasted 1-2 degrees Celsius (33 F) with only minor damage. They need protection from intense heat. Simple screening.
Don't let garden soil touch these plants. They will die overnight.
I find this plant is not demanding whatsoever although I thought it would be. I keep in mind the torrential downpours it would encounter and the sparse mossy clump alongside a puddle of water it might be growing in. I give it bright light (sunlight is best but not too hot in summer) and spray it with my pump-type sprayer. I'll let the traps fill to overflowing and soak the moss. It's responding very well with two new flower shoots coming up at the moment.
To continue... it is growing indoors at the moment although I leave it outside all summer. It likes cool nights and bright, warm days. It's designed to catch as much rain as possible and appreciates rainfalls. During the winter it is grown under 400W HPS lamps alongside my highland and ultrahighland Nepenthes.
I'm actually finding this plant much easier to take care of than the Cephalotus. I actually have them growing alongside each other. This heliamphora is actually so resilient it has traps over two years old still working fine. It is now sending up two flower shoots which should have 5 or 6 flowers each.

you definatley wouldnt get any type of high, heliamphora dont even produce digestive enzymes of thier own to break down their meals.
