Mike obtained permission from all members & their spouses, to say " The Beach Boys"; legally, they are The Beach Boys Band. In any case, as long as they keep the music alive, I'm Ok with it. Randell Kirsch was a stellar addition --I only wish Chris Farmer had stayed. As long as the music is done with respect & care, Mike / Bruce have every right to do it. Do I miss Carl ??? Ho can it be "The beach boys" when a beach boy isnt even singing lead? what the hells that all about? Brian puts this to shame even though he can't hit the high notes so easily now!
Sir, sadly, only Mike is an "Original"; Bruce joined in spring of '65 [ I saw his 3rd performance that year, in Denver! ] all the others are sidemen. Sad, but The Beach boys died when Carl died. He was the glue that held them together & gave them real musical standing. Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 Yes, Carl was so unappreciated I think. and a great voice....he could do all Brian's leads... THey were sooooo talented, all of them. Keep Rockin Brian.....RIP Carl and Dennis
Of all the people who've sung with " The Beach Boys" over the years, Jeff Foskett did this lead beautifully, as did Al, back in '73/74. You can hear his lead on the '73 Concert CD; it is, to me, the best of them all. Al was so underated, but it was his falsetto that kept the group legitimate, after Brian left. While it wasn't as strong, & he idn't have Brian's whine, no one else did either; Al's lead on DWB, with Dennis / Carl / Mike/ Billy Hinsche/ Blondie Chaplin, is gorgeous. Wolfsky9
This was a great band lineup for the '73 In Concert show. Ed Carter, Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar, Billy Hinsche,Al Jardine, Mike Kowalski, Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson. I believe Dennis wasn't on the Drums due to an accident he had with his hand.
Sir, That's the line-up I saw At Anaheim Convention Ctr., Sept.'73, & to me, it was in many ways, the very best Group Onstage, The Beach Boys ever had. By then it was also VERY clear that the stars were Dennis & Carl, each in his own way. Dennis had indeed hurt his hand, so he often just stood at the mike, sometimes with his finger covering his ear, head cocked , & sang harmonies. Carl was by then, THE dominant musical force Onstage; he was 60% of why I went to their concerts. Wolfsky9
To gibb253, Yes sir, Al was the voice & falstto for the group, after Brian left in Nov.'64. Indeed, it was because Al could hit the high notes, that Brian asked him to come back in '62, when Brian didn't want to do the 2nd Tour . Watch the Live 1980 Concert at Knebworth on DVD; hear Al hit that very pretty high part on the chorus of "God Only Knows." ; Carl's falsetto is very clear on "Good Timin "; indeed, listen closely: ALL the voices are Carl. He did all the voices! Wolfsky9
Hi, thanks for replying. I don't think you're quite accurate historically, though. After Brian left, the falsetto parts were taken first by Glen Campbell, then by Bruce Johnston. I know Carl and AL swapped leads later in their career, but I still don't think Al was ever used as the principal falsetto.
To My friend, gibb253; With respect, it really was Al & only Al, who sang BW's parts whe he left. Indeed, both Glen Campbell & Bruce played the Bass guitar parts, but trust me, I was there. As I said earlier, when BW asked Al to leave Dentistry school [ or his aspirations to become one] , in '62, it was because Al & ONLY Al, could hit those "E" & "F" notes. Glen became a Tenor by sheer practice, but he NEVER hit BW's notes; Bruce has a falsetto too, but nothing like Al. Wolfsky9
Hello Wolfsky-this is an intriguing debate.I too often saw the Boys and have listened to all the live material available. True, Bruce had a weak falsetto but when I saw them he was singing Brian's lines. Can you direct me to a video clip where Al is clearly singing one of Brian's lines?(Not Knebworth as the vocals are post production). If Al has such a good falsetto, why did the Boys employ a string of falsetto replacements- Adrian Newey right through to Matt Jardine, and not use him?
Hello gibb253: 1st off, I believe you refer to Adrian Baker who, along with Jeff Foskett, took his turn hitting the falsetto vocals for The BB's . Jeff was primary from '81 when Carl left the group for that year, to '89, when he was asked by Carl, to leave; Adrian filled in for 2-3 years, until Matt took over permanently, 1993, 94. So, you ask, if Al was so good, why didn't he keep on? I find it amusing that only someone your age, could ask a question like that. . Wolfsky9
Sorry, of course i meant Baker, of "Gidea Park" fame. I'd still appreciate it if you would direct me to a clip of Al singing falsetto- as I thought I could recognise each BB voice blindfolded, and Al's best know leads, Rhonda, When I kissed her, etc. give no hint of his falsetto talents.
@gibb253 Sir, What I would encourage you to do, is to purchase, if you have not already, the CD/ DVd, of the Knebworth Concert, June 1980. This was crucial in many ways, & it also clearly allows you to see & hear Al's Falsetto. Listen to him on the chorus at the end of " GOK " , where he hits a beautiful high note. Also on Surfer Girl, it's Al hitting high notes. On " I Get Around", Bassist Joe Chemay joins in with Falsetto--also, on Lady Lynda. Otherwise, it's Al--all the way. Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 Hi again, we're talking at cross purposes here- I agree that Al could sing falsetto and I have seen him do it on the Knebworth concerts. However, as I pointed out, on the Michigan university recordings and at the central park concert, he is most definitely not doing it, so your claim below that he did all the falsetto parts till 81 is overstating things. The official literature is not on your side either, Bruce talks about learning to play the bass and to sing "Brian's high parts".
@al853 Sir, At Knebworth, you BW 2 times--oned too many, I'm sad to say. On song #2, " Sloop John B", he sings the 1st verse. And--sadly--on the Bridge of " Surfer Girl", it's also BW [ with the Intro from Dennis : " Ladies & Gentlemen, Brian Wilson" ] --those are the only 2 . Period. BW was in a terrible place by '80, overweight, neglecting himself, & sadly, it showed. That concert has a few vocal treasures : sadly, BW's voice was NOT one of them. Wolfsky9
Thought I'd weigh in on the Al Jardine falsetto debate :-) Al definately had one. Check out "Be Here In The Mornin'" from the Friends album (even though his vocal is sped up) for proof.
Although the Beach Boys did use many falsettos when touring (Foskett,Jardine etc...) Jardine did have the ability also...I believe...and he would do much of BW's verses in his absence...One that springs to mind that should be on here is Wouldn't it be nice...from Live Aid.
Hi Nathan and Wolfsky--it seems you guys are right, as my friend Gianluca from the Sunny Boys (Please check their version of DWBaby, Nathan if you want to hear a lovely falsetto) tells me he even has a 65 bootleg of Al singing DWB (not very well, though!) and generally confirms what you say. However, I still think Al was not used to replace Brian on the classic surfin hits onstage, as they thought it best to leave his blend with Carl on the choruses intact. Pity, perhaps, as Bruce was weakish.
@gibb253 Sir, 1st off, I HAVE both heard/ seen The Sunny Boys do "DWB", & it is wonderful. They do the song proud. Of course, having 4 drop-dead long legged Babes, also helps. I also MUST tell you--because I was there--I'm almost 64 y/o now, & I saw the group 1st in 8/10/64 --then 4/20/65 [ Bruce's 3rd performance ! ] , & another 26 times till 11/97. I know what I know, & I know who sang what. Please do trust me on this. Al sang Falsetto until '81, when Jeff Foskett joined. Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 -Thanks for your comments on the Sunny Boys. I do now accept that Al can sing falsetto, however they switched roles around a lot. If you listen to "The Live Box" Bruce is definitely doing the falsettos, and very weakly, it has to be said. Similarly at the Central Park 1971 concert, the dreadful version of I get around has Al visibly chanting the "get around round round I get around" chorus while the totally inaudible falsetto is bruce's. So we agree Al sometimes sang falsetto...!
Whats with the al can sing falsetto, saying it like its almost impossible, everyone can ing falsetto jeez, its making falsetto sound clear and perfect that is the goodness of it, but singing in falsetto is something every single human being has
@gibb253 Sir, When BW left the road in 11/64, & Glen Campbell 1st filled in, The BB's knew they could still go on, & sound legit. They knew this, because from the very start, Al Jardine's vocal range was right next to BW's. No, he didn't have " The Whine" , nor did he have the ability to stay up in the keys of F & G. That said, he WAS able to hit the notes, & do them onstage. . Now recall, BW sang in that range for 2 years onstage; Al did it for 17 years, till Jeff Foskett, in '81,. Wolfsky9
@2075Nathan to All: from '62, when BW decided to skip that tour, & Al was asked back, he filled in & did ALL the Falsetto parts, till 1981, when Jeff Foskett joined. Al did a magnificent " DWB", & it's on the '73 concert album. He was always underrated, & it';s his falsetto heard for over 16 years: Nov. '64, to June of '81. I know: I was there, & saw the group all through those years. Wolfsky9
Randel, next to the drummer is singing lead.(he wrote Blue Kiss for Jane Weidlin of the Go Go's). One of the Cousils is on drums. al Jardine offered to play for scale, but Mike Love refused to have him...would have been 3 Beach Boys...too bad.
Mike Love is the only original Beach Boy in this clip. Bruce Johnston was from the Rip-Cords & joined the band after Brian quit touring. Tho Maybe David Marks tours with these guys sometimes, he was a friend of the band and replaced Al Jardine for awhile.
Mike Love needed the real Beach Boys (Brian, Carl, Dennis, and Al). The Beach Boys really didn't need him. They sorta let him hang around and he mostly just sang as a base. He was a renegade type, and really didn't add much. In fact, if you look at their early days, you'll see that they kept pushing him off to the side, further and further each show. He seemed happy to be singing his part away from them. He would actually do his own thing like he was a solo act, while the boys were singing.
Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. Al Jardine left the band one or two years ago to join Brian Wilson on the 40th Anniversary Pet Sounds tour and afterwards head his own band. Brian Wilson has his solo career and Carl and Dennis have passed away.
To luisalonsoecheverria, Sir,with respect, I need to correct your history. When Carl died, Feb. 1998, there were only 3 " Beach Boys" touring: Al, Mike, & Bruce. Al & Mike had a serious falling out in the Late 80's that almost led to Al leaving then. However, as always, Carl convinced the 2 of them to go on together. When Carl died, Mike PURCHASED the use of the name, paying royalties, & in so doing, told Al, " goodbye". Sadly, they have never reconciled. Wolfsky9
Ill stick with the 1960's Beach Boys. Back to sleep now!

Which original Beach Boys are actually in this version?

Mike Love and Bruce Johnston. Al Jardine left the band one or two years ago to join Brian Wilson on the 40th Anniversary Pet Sounds tour and afterwards head his own band. Brian Wilson has his solo career and Carl and Dennis have passed away.

Thanks for the info luisalonsoecheverria Mike Love and Bruce Johnson certainly have earned the right to be called Beach Boys.

Wolfsky9
