They did use some basic mechanical motion repeating rigs on 2001.
2001 used rudimentary motion control. Go-motion is basically computer-assisted motor-driven stop-motion.

yeah, i thought this woulda predated gomotion by at least 10 years. wikipedia says it was created for Empire Strikes Back!
